Knowledge Building Strategist

Gender at Work is looking for a Knowledge Building Strategist to catalyze and coordinate knowledge building and knowledge outreach across our change interventions and network.

Background: Gender at Work is a transnational network of individuals and organizations located at the intersection of theory and practice which works to end discrimination against women and advance cultures of equality.  We mobilize top-notch thinkers, analysts, and activists to build cutting-edge knowledge and change interventions and unleash individual and collective capacities for gender justice that are unique, grounded and politically conscious. We work to build a field of thinking and practice by taking these innovations to an ever-widening community of individuals, organizations, movements and teaching institutions committed to this goal. 
We are looking for a person to catalyze and coordinate knowledge building and knowledge outreach across our change interventions and network. The Knowledge Building Strategist will have the following roles and responsibilities: 
  • In consultation with G@W’s ED, Associates, Board and staff, develop a clear, useful and innovative knowledge building strategy for G@W which involves both knowledge creation and aggregation of innovations across the field
  • Identify cutting edge issues and strategies across G@W programs and products and advise and support Associates and network members to capture learning on critical pathways of change, successes and challenges in line with the knowledge strategy.
  • In consultation with the ED, assist with the development of funding proposals to pursue the knowledge strategy.
  • Working with the Communications Strategist, design and facilitate learning and knowledge building and sharing activities across the G@W network.
  • Design processes for storytelling and case studies (video, audio, written) for publication and dissemination through on-line media.
  • In consultation with the ED and Director of Operations assist in donor reporting on learning from G@W programs and initiatives 
  • Develop and test with Associates and network members, meaningful measures of progress on G@W’s strategic learning objectives.
  • In coordination with G@W’s Communications Strategist, identify, develop and facilitate on-line learning and sharing opportunities (such as webinars, on-line discussions etc. across programs, regions and the network as a whole).
  • Develop and implement a G@W on-line publication series
  • Identify opportunities for new program initiatives to advance theory-practice in line with our strategic goals and organizational growth.
This would be a half-time position based anywhere in the world.  Travel is required. 
Required skills:
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the theory and practice of gender equality and institutional change, feminism and women’s rights, sustainable development, organizational development and learning, systems, power analysis and innovations in measuring social change.
  • Proven ability to work in a flexible environment with high-level thinkers.
  • A systems-thinker with proven ability to design and implement knowledge building strategies across diverse initiatives and communities globally.
  • Proven ability to capture complex ideas, draw comparisons, generate knowledge and communicate key learnings to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent writing skills, and proven proposal writing skills, in particular.  Fluent in English and preferably one other language.
  • Experience in working across countries and regions to build learning networks
  • Creative strategist and self-starter.

Dealing with Problems:
Problems to be handled may involve working across functions and departments in Plan to ensure uptake and accountability is achieved across Plan’s core gender standards in programmes. This will require skills in negotiation, listening, analysis and creative thinking to solve such challenges.
Communications and Working Relationships:
The Gender Technical Officer will report directly to the Global Gender Advisor who oversees the Programme Pillar of the BIAAG Campaign. The position will sit within Plan’s Programme Quality Team. Other key working relationships include Director of Programme Quality, the Progamme Effectiveness Team, the BIAAG Core Team, Regional Gender Specialists (all four Regional Offices); alongside other experts on gender equality in COs and NOs.
Knowledge, Skills and Behaviors Required to Achieve Role’s Objectives:
Knowledge:
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the links between gender equality, children’s rights and international development programme practice.
Demonstrated understanding of girls’ rights issues, relevant programming practice.
Knowledge of gender analysis programme frameworks and their application to child-rights programming.
Knowledge of programme design, monitoring and evaluation within the operating realities of a major NGO.
Skills:
Ability to develop and communicate programme theoretical concepts and to apply these to practical solutions in gender equality and children’s rights.

Senior Programme Officer- Environment, Climate Change And Security, International Alert- London, UK

The Senior Officer will provide administrative support, financial and budget management and the management of programme officers, interns and volunteers as needed.

We are looking for a Senior Programme Officer to join the Environment, Climate Change and Security (ECCS) strand in Alert’s Peacebuilding Issues Programme (PIP).  You will work alongside the ECCS Project Manager and Programme Officer, supporting with the implementation of existing climate change and security project activities. A proportion of your time will be focused on new project development and collaborations with other thematic teams and regional programmes in International Alert (Alert). You will provide administrative support, financial and budget management and the management of programme officers, interns and volunteers as needed.
You must have at least 3 years proven experience of research, analysis and writing both academic and evidence-based advocacy material. In addition, you will be capable of translating good project ideas into fundable projects with clear change goals, and possess substantial knowledge about all three fields – climate, development, conflict – and their inter-linkages.
Educated to post-graduate degree level, you will manage financial expenditure with accuracy and oversight, in line with project budgets; have proven advocacy experience in either climate change, or development or the field of violent conflict and peacebuilding along with proven experience of generating policy recommendations.

General Summary

Description of Job Functions 

Information and Referral Program
  • Provide direct person to person, telephone and electronic communication to the public regarding the Center and community information and resources.
  • Supervise, schedule and evaluate volunteers and interns for the Center's information and referral desk, ensuring highest possible client service delivery. Provide staff back up for the information and referral desk as necessary.
  • Supervise volunteers on maintenance of Center bulletin boards and provision of collateral materials in public areas of the facility.
  • Assist in training on protocols and procedures with volunteers.
  • Oversee data entry and regular updates of the I&R database.
Volunteer Program
  • Recruit volunteers and provide initial training / orientation for new volunteers. Participate in planning and implementation of volunteer appreciation and professional development for volunteers.
  • Support basic volunteer coordination for Center programs and services, including recruitment, training and scheduling of volunteers for specific program activities.
  • Assist in the coordination of community programs and responses on current events and community issues including lectures, readings, town hall meetings, celebrations, marches and/or media responses and press conferences
  • Assist in the coordination of Center Pride month activities, including parade contingent, float and booth.
Cyber Center
  • Recruit, coordinate and schedule volunteers to staff the Cyber Center
  • Oversee Cyber Center cash handling and record keeping.
  • Provide conflict management and security assistance.
  • Work with Facilities staff and technical staff to keep Cyber Center equipment in operating condition.
Other Duties
  • Actively participate as a member of the Community Programs team including provision of back up for other program staff as needed.
  • Support special projects, including participating in long and short term program planning, implementation of program activities and initiatives and tracking of statistics and evaluation data.
  • Other duties assigned by Director of Programs
  • Work on evenings and week-end hours will be required. 
Qualifications & Experience
  • Commitment to the mission of the San Francisco LGBT Community Center. Experience and commitment to working in a multicultural environment.
  • Minimum one year experience working in community organizing, volunteer management and/or program coordination. Demonstrated ability to work with a broad cross-section of the LGBT community.
  • Strong familiarity with LGBT resources, including, but not limited to, health and wellness, housing, legal, employment and social activities.
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, de-escalation, and crisis management skills, ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent customer-service abilities.
  • Experience working collaboratively with multiple agencies desired.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively with supervisor or as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
  • Computer/PC literacy, including Internet proficiency, Microsoft Office Software, Google Docs, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Experience with Salesforce a plus.
  • Fluency in English is required. Bilingual or ASL skills highly desired.

JOB SUMMARY
The Program Associate for Grants Operations supports the Program Team for Latin America and Caribbean in implementing their grantmaking programs. The Program Associate for Grants Operations reports to and is guided by the Program Officer for Grants Operations and is a member of the Operations Team. This position will be responsible for reviewing and coordinating correspondence with organizations that request support from the Global Fund for Women and ensuring that grant payments are successfully made and communicated to grantees in accordance with GFW's policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Grant Making
  • Enter and upload incoming grant proposals into database
  • Review proposals as assigned by Regional Program Director and/or Program Officer
  • Communicate with current and potential grant recipients, including responding to inquiries and sending application acknowledgement and decline letters
  • Communicate, as needed, with Global Fund Advisors for additional information on potential grant recipients
  • Draft written summaries of the groups' purposes and activities
  • Translate and/or coordinate the translation of grant-making materials and other program-related materials such as non-English portions of the website
  • File in database correspondence from groups, including photos, reports and other grant-making documents
  • Support the compilation of grants docket, including: preparing analysis of prospective groups, and researching specific topics related to the region
  • Prepare summaries of final reports for grants awarded
Grants Administration
  • Finalize and send contract documents in preparation for payment of awarded grants
  • Correspond with grantees throughout the payment process to retrieve information and resolve payment issues
  • Ensure operational due diligence (NGO registration) in preparation for grant payment
  • Finalize payment letters and send to grantees
  • Help to maintain accurate information in the database in preparation for the annual audit
  • Facilitate the payment and receipt of grant funds in a timely manner, including tracking pending payments
  • Supply all back-up documentation to the Finance sub-team
  • Assure compliance with Global Fund for Women's grantmaking policies and procedures
Monitoring
  • Input select data during application and grantee final reporting processes, in support of Learning, Monitoring & Evaluation team
  • Support the Program Team in collection of reporting from grantees
Outreach/Communications
  • Support the collection of region-specific information for various requests;
  • Support the dissemination of region-specific information on women's human rights
  • Represent the organization/regional team in conferences and other forums

Internal Relationships
This position reports to the Program Officer for Grants Operations and has daily working relationships with the Program Team and other staff.
External Relationship
Contact with outside grantees, vendors, advisors, consultants, and the general public.

Required
