SUMMARY
SEIU 775 is the long-term care workers union, representing 43,000 home care and nursing home workers. We are a leader in the progressive community and take bold and aggressive approaches to politics and organizing. Our daily work is designed to unite workers, and especially long-term care workers, and to hold politicians accountable for quality care and quality jobs.
We are seeking a talented and creative person to help with the continued development and implementation of communications strategies to support growth.Our growth department works on campaigns that build power among non-union, low-wage workers in long-term care and other industries. Much of work is done under the banner of the Fight for $15 campaign. The successful candidate will help develop and maintain online outreach to workers, help create campaign messaging, and integrate traditional communications platforms, including print and video, with emerging new media. Candidates may also be asked to do some press work. The work would be done as part of an organization-wide communications team.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Use innovative online outreach strategies to reach home care, nursing homes, and other low-wage workers across Washington and Montana and to gather organizing leads.
  • Research and make recommendations on existing and emerging communications technologies that may assist organizers, communicators, and other SEIU 775 staff and leaders.
  • Develop messaging for organizing and legislative campaigns.
  • Prep workers for speaking roles, take pictures and videos of rallies and other events, and produce videos, presentations, or other materials for leadership.
  • Write creative and accurate copy for a wide variety of communications platforms including, but not limited to, email, web, video, brochure and newsletter formats.
  • Provide creative and accurate editing of copy produced by other staff or SEIU 775 leaders.
  • Occasional work on press releases, press outreach, and speaking to the press
REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience and mastery in online communications, marketing and/or campaign communications
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, plus overnight travel
PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in a communications-related field
  • Graphic design ability

COMPENSATION
Competitive pay, great benefits, exciting work. Salary and benefits are set by collective bargaining agreement, and range from $47,728 to $55,978 a year depending on experience. Benefits include fully employer-paid family health, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, a generous leave package, an ORCA Transit Card, fully employer-paid pension (defined benefit plan), an optional 401(K) plan (no employer match), and other benefits outlined in the policies of SEIU 775 and the staff union contract.

AREAS OF WORK
MOBILIZATIONS, TOURS AND NATIONAL ORGANIZING
  • Educate and organize with students and other communities regionally and nationally to plan mobilizations and tours (often involves travel);
  • Plan logistical elements and coordination of events and actions;
  • Develop and carry out press strategy;
  • Produce internal media (written, photo, video, social media).
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
  • Co-present and facilitate workshops with CIW members during Immokalee visits and at conferences and gatherings;
  • Raise consciousness and engage base though targeted outreach, online actions, institutional endorsements and sign-on letters;
  • Oral interpretation and written translation between Spanish and English for campaign literature;
  • Develop and disseminate materials and newsletters;
  • Maintain listservs, website, and social media presence, and supporter database.
STUDENT/YOUTH ORGANIZING
  • Co-coordinate a youth leadership development program, including campaign strategy gatherings, skills trainings, and regular communication with SFA's Steering Committee;
  • Build and maintain relationships with SFA members and allies around the country, including local SFA chapters, national and local student organizations, individual students and youth, and professors/teachers/university staff;
  • Help design and carry out student-led organizing campaigns to further the goals of the Campaign for Fair Food.
ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • Joint fundraising and grant-writing;
  • Administrative work and book/record keeping;
  • Organizational development of Student/Farmworker Alliance and the Alliance for Fair Food.
SUPPORT FOR CIW AND FARMWORKER COMMUNITY
  • Assistance with with interpretation, rides, wage-theft cases, low-power FM radio station, technology and more.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Deep commitment to social and economic justice
  • Prior organizing experience, including student organizing
  • Bilingual in Spanish-English
  • Skill working with a broad range of peoples
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer proficiency (web and design skills a plus)
  • Willingness to work long hours when necessary
  • Ability to take initiative and responsibility for projects
  • Ability to work well in teams
  • Experience living or working in low-income, immigrant, or multi-cultural communities
  • Commitment to anti-oppression, collective liberation and building diverse movement leadership
  • Minimum two year commitment
