Each semester NOW interns participate in a wide range of activities that provide them with the tools and knowledge to become activist leaders, such as:
  • A Comprehensive leadership training
  • Frequent opportunities to organize and attend Congressional and U.S. Supreme Court hearings, press conferences, demonstrations, and rallies
  • Training in our successful, time-honored grassroots organizing tactics
  • Weekly intern discussion groups and field trips on a wide range of feminist issues
Interns will work with one of the following teams
  • Communications Team: Research, draft and edit articles for NOW's various publications (including the blog), email communications (including advocacy, fundraising, and monthly newsletters) and social media platforms. Assist with developing comprehensive messaging for cross-organizational purposes, including calendar for internal use. Work with the Senior Communications Associate and the Field Team to develop social media campaigns and content for chapter use. Work with the Senior Communications Associate to produce daily content for various social media platforms, namely Facebook and Twitter. Track media hits and update press clips on website. Coordinate projects for the NOW Foundation's Love Your Body campaign. At events with NOW officers, take photographs and video (when appropriate). Qualifications: Demonstrated commitment to progressive social change; excellent written and verbal communication skills; training and/or experience with editorial or advocacy writing; knowledge of Associated Press style preferred, but not required; familiarity with Facebook and Twitter a must (includes personal usage); experience with other social media platforms, such as Google+, Pinterest, or Tumblr, is a plus; strong organizational skills, attention to detail, professional demeanor and the ability to juggle several tasks while meeting deadlines; general computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications; and HTML or WordPress experience is a plus.
  • Digital Communications: Do you follow the news and breaking events on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites? Are you passionate about women's issues and social change? Do you blog and vlog, tweet and snapchat, and wear your politics on your feed? If you are interested in making lasting contributions in digital advocacy and fundraising at the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States, then you should join our Online Communications Internship Program.Candidate must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and professional under pressure. Qualified candidates will have great written and verbal communication skills, a strong handling of calendaring and scheduling, and the ability to juggle several tasks while meeting deadlines. The ideal candidate will have interest or training in online advocacy and has demonstrated a commitment to progressive social change.Significant familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other social media platforms is a must. Confidence with software: Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel, also a must; Photoshop and video editing experience a plus! Familiarity with eCRM systems (Salsa Labs) preferred; HTML knowledge is a plus.
  • Field Organizing Team: Get involved in the nuts and bolts of grassroots organizing for NOW's broad range of priority issues. Serve as a liasion between National Action Center and state/local chapter activists. Work on rallies, campaigns, chapter development, and materials development.
  • Government Relations/Public Policy Team: Characterized by lobbying as well as legislative research and writing.
  • Membership/Fundraising Team: Learn highly marketable skills for the non-profit world by providing customer service to donors, assisting with data management and communicating with chapter leaders and activists.
  • Political Action Committee: Assist with NOW PAC organizing, including meeting with candidates, processing endorsement requests, and researching candidates' records on women's rights issues.
  • President's Office: Work directly with NOW's President and her Assistant, staffing the president at speaking events, as well as outreach meetings with heads of allied organizations. Learn first-hand how a grassroots activist organization works.
These volunteer, unpaid internship opportunities are available both full and part time, and college credit can be arranged. A minimum of 3 days per week is required.Prospective interns should be hard working, enthusiastic and flexible individuals who possess or seek a working knowledge of women's issues and feminist organizing. Interns should also be committed to continuing the struggle for equality and justice once they leave the internship program and return to their campuses and communities.

This position works within the Community Health Action Department to coordinate intervention to prevent gender-based violence and promote reproductive and sexual health and rights among immigrant Latina women in DC Metropolitan area through the implementation of participatory health education methodologies, peer-based support groups and system navigation.

Qualifications

  • Two-years of college or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fully bilingual Spanish/English; fluent spoken and written Spanish/English; bicultural.
  • Knowledge of Latino immigrant community in DC Metro Area and ability to work with all segments of the community.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Develop and implement work plan ensuring completion of Gender and Health Program's deliverables, including:
    1. Reaching recruitment work plan's goals for health promoters and participants,
    2. Recruiting, training and coordinating health promoters activities.
    3. Recruiting and facilitating small-groups skills-building sessions.
    4. Reaching work plan targets for individual group and community -level interventions.
    5. Implement training based on popular education for peer educators. Co-facilitate personal development groups, skill building and other educational sessions with the target populations.
    6. Provide monthly written reports on progress meeting work plan's goals;
  2. Conduct initial interview and needs assessment for prospective program participants.
  3. Coordinate and schedule program appointments for clients. Includes calling clients to inform them of changes in schedules or cancelled appointments
  4. Handle phone/face-to-face contacts with clients and individuals seeking information regarding Gender and Health Program.
  5. Coordinate Services Navigation for program participants linking them to health care, social and legal support services and ensuring retention.
  6. Provide logistic support for Weekly Support Groups and Monthly Educational Workshops.
  7. Update social media platforms with program's prevention messages, calendar of activities and information;
  8. Administer assigned program's expenditure budget, ensuring expenditures according to approved budget;
  9. Collect and report data from each activity following program guidelines;
  10. Coordinate work related to the Gender and Health with staff within and outside La ClĂ­nica;
  11. Represent La Clinica at relevant meetings and coalitions within and outside La Clinica;

The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) seeks a highly motivated and skilled individual to join NNEDV's Coalition Capacity Team. This is a problem-solving and troubleshooting leadership position that includes direct consultation with and technical assistance to the 56 state and territory domestic violence and dual coalitions, supervision of support staff, training, and facilitation of meetings.
NNEDV provides training, technical assistance, and support to coalitions; local domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking programs; providers of services to victims of intimate partner violence; and other stakeholders, including governmental agencies. NNEDV's Coalition Capacity Project provides comprehensive, specialized technical assistance and training to the coalitions with the goal of helping them to best address the needs of victims and local domestic violence programs. This includes topical meetings, intensive executive coaching, individualized consultation and training, peer-to-peer mentoring, regional meetings, management of a participant listserv, and the creation of resource materials.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement training and technical assistance to coalition leaders, including executive coaching and training on working with boards of directors, non-profit management, and personnel management.
  • Provide guidance and support in planning an annual National Coalition Roundtable Conference, which includes identifying emerging trends in the field, selecting topics for the conference agenda, and managing speakers.
  • Respond to daily technical assistance requests from state and territory coalition leaders and staff.
  • Coordinate with funders and other national TA providers by phone and email, providing information and referrals as needed.
  • Develop culturally appropriate resources and training materials regarding specialized issues impacting the stability of state and territory coalitions. These include, but are not limited to, board development and strategic planning, leadership transition, grant management, and organizational policies for coalitions based on best practices.
  • Lead in the development and execution of in-person consultations, trainings, webinars and regional meetings. This includes selection and communication with presenters, meeting facilitation and/or presentation, site selection, and coordination around funder requirements.
  • Work closely with the Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) to assist State Coalition grantees in program policy creation and revision.
  • Draft program- and grant-required reports and ensure that training and technical assistance data is accurately collected and reported.
  • Work closely with NNEDV's national partners to ensure coordination of resources.
Other Responsibilities
  • Attend national meetings for the purpose of building and sustaining partnerships to enhance our work.
  • Work closely with other NNEDV teams to ensure that programmatic and policy efforts are integrated and responsive to the needs of coalitions and other constituents.
  • Identify emerging issues and trends in the field and works to develop innovative training and technical assistance solutions.
  • Act as a liaison with other non-government and governmental partners, as assigned.
  • Assist in policy development and systems change issues.
  • Assist in organization-wide communications efforts to enhance the visibility of the project, the organization, and the issue of domestic violence.
  • Participate in agency-wide activities and events, and assist with them as needed.
Requirements
A successful applicant must have:
  • At least 7 years of experience in the field of domestic violence, preferably at a state or territory coalition.
  • Significant leadership experience and knowledge of nonprofit organizations; federal grant management, specifically Office of Violence Against Women and/or Family Violence Prevention Services Act grants; and program management experience.
  • Supervisory experience and strong, collaborative leadership skills, with an ability to provide executive coaching to cultivate these skills in others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with stakeholders and partners, including the ability to understand and navigate sensitive or political relationships.
  • Outstanding public speaking and facilitation skills
  • Strong written communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with team members, other agency staff, and external colleagues; work well independently; treat all people with dignity and respect; accept, act upon, and offer constructive criticism; and approach situations with a sense of humor.
  • Experience developing and providing training and technical assistance to non-profit boards, leaders, and support staff, preferably to coalitions specifically.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks, manage time, evaluate progress and adjust activities to complete tasks within established time frames, and produce high quality work.
  • Demonstrated skills in goal setting, problem solving, creative/analytic thinking, and organization.
  • Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with advanced features of MS Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Commitment to the agency mission and a feminist/egalitarian workplace.
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree. Master's degree preferred.
  • Willingness to travel 25-30% of the time.

Groundswell is looking for an independent, dedicated, and talented writing fellow to create and develop content for our web-based magazine. Groundswell is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving our community, and our magazine is our newest effort to promote positive change in the world. It's our goal to help people and communities use their everyday purchasing decisions to drive these changes. Featured in Fast Company and Forbes, we use an innovative new model for social impact called Civic Consumption. Civic Consumption brings people together to increase access and lower prices on the goods and services they need most, while rewarding businesses with a positive social or environmental impact.
Much of Groundswell's day-to-day operation revolves around our wind energy program, and in the magazine, we're working to extend the idea of conscious consuming into all aspects of life. As a writing fellow, you would be responsible for writing unique content (articles, infographics, video responses) that would go directly to the magazine's front-page. Your articles would be read by thousands of people each day, offering you exposure and practice in front of an active, engaged audience. You'd work closely with the Communications team, and you'd receive one-on-one guidance from staff as you develop your voice and online presence.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Research and write 1-2 news or features articles per week. All articles will connect in to everyday purchasing power, and will be individually actionable. These articles would focus on topics such as: corporate social responsibility, feminism, workers' rights, racism, politics, the environment, sustainable living, public health, body image, family, income inequality, culture and trends, or technology
  • Serve as an ambassador to Groundswell's brand
  • Participate in weekly editorial brainstorming sessions, and have a firsthand role in developing new content avenues, partnerships, and programs
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • The ability to commit to writing 1-2 articles per week for 4 months
  • Attendance (in person or virtually via Google Hangouts) at our weekly editorial brainstorming meetings (Mondays, from 2:30-3:30PM in our D.C. offices)

SUMMARY
Monitor choice-related policy issues at the federal and state levels. Perform policy analysis and research on choice-related proposals, draft a variety of advocacy materials, and contribute to significant policy publications. Under the supervision of the vice president, help represent and advance NARAL's policy views and goals to Congress, state affiliates, and other constituencies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Within assigned issue areas (in some cases working solely; in others, working as a team with a junior or senior colleague):
  • Track all relevant choice-related activity on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch, and in state legislatures. Report developments to key staff as appropriate. Perform policy analysis on state and federal legislation, and, as assigned, advocate NARAL Pro-Choice America's views.
  • As directed, with issue teammates, craft and carry out legislative strategy.
  • Represent NARAL's policy views on Capitol Hill. As assigned, lobby and brief congressional staff through in-person meetings, written communications, and phone calls. Work mark-ups, hearings, and votes.
  • Assist state affiliates on key choice-related proposals with policy analysis and strategy recommendations.
  • Write, edit, and update fact sheets, talking points, letters to policymakers, staff memos, model legislation, testimony, and other key policy and advocacy documents.
  • Coordinate policy strategy and activities across NARAL as a whole to maximize benefits to the pro-choice movement and NARAL in particular.
  • As assigned, represent NARAL to progressive partners and coalitions.
  • Contribute to and help produce key publications, including Who Decides?, the annual voting record, fact sheets, and Policy Updates.
  • Edit copy from other departments.
  • Liaise with other departments or internal work groups as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four-year college degree.
  • Minimum three years professional experience, preferably in a related field, or relevant advanced degree may be substituted for some of the work experience.
  • Policy and/or direct lobbying experience at the state and/or national level.
  • Directly related experience in research and/or policy analysis.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to juggle multiple tasks and timelines simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Access, Excel, and other programs.

Overview
The World Resources Institute is seeking a full-time Civil Society Specialist for Global Forest Watch (GFW). GFW’s mission is to make high-quality information about forests universally accessible and useful for people worldwide, so as to empower them to manage forest landscapes sustainably and improve the livelihoods of local people. The GFW platform unites satellite technology, open data, and human networks to provide free access to the most timely, reliable, and actionable information about the world’s forests. The GFW initiative supports governments, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the private sector to apply this information to solve critical forest monitoring and management challenges.

In the context of civil society, GFW aims to empower CSOs around the world to become more effective in their research, advocacy, and campaigns. Using the GFW platform and related tools, CSOs can access the information and evidence they need to hold governments and companies accountable for decisions that impact forests and indigenous and local communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. The Civil Society Specialist will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to promote broad uptake and use of GFW by civil society. The position will bridge and foster collaboration between the Global Forest Watch team (in WRI’s Forest Program) and the Environmental Democracy Team (in WRI’s Governance Program).
Responsibilities
  • With support from senior staff from the GFW and Environmental Democracy teams, lead the ongoing development and refinement of GFW’s civil society engagement strategy.
  • Translate high-level strategies into concrete activities and outputs. Lead the day-to-day implementation of these activities, including by coordinating contributions from other WRI staff as necessary.
  • Build and grow a diverse and engaged network of civil society users of GFW around the world. Document stories of how CSOs in this network are using GFW to affect change on the ground.
  • Design and conduct training and capacity building of CSOs on the use of GFW data and tools for research and advocacy purposes, including by creating guidance and learning resources.
  • Support the implementation of GFW’s Small Grants Fund, which provides grants between $10-40k to CSOs to apply GFW in their work, by reviewing proposals, stewarding grantees, and documenting outcomes.
  • In collaboration with civil society partners, drive and support campaigns for increased forest sector transparency and proactive disclosure of forest information at both local and global scales.
  • Conduct research and gather user feedback to enhance our understanding of civil society and local community needs and uses of GFW. Recommend ways to improve the data and functionality of the GFW platform to enhance its usefulness for civil society users.
  • Contribute to GFW’s overall efforts to monitor, evaluate, and communicate the outcomes and impacts of our work, including through formal internal and donor reporting processes. 
  • Facilitate strategic collaboration between the Global Forest Watch and Environmental Democracy Teams.
Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree with adequate course work around natural resource management and governance, NGOs, NGO management, communications and messaging, and community development.
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant professional experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of civil society organizations, including NGOs, networks of NGOs, particularly in tropical developing countries;
  • Good inter-personal skills and the ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-national context and team;
  • Experience in mobilizing civil society and/or communities around public interest issues as well as through evidence based advocacy
  • Excellent written and oral communications abilities
  • Excellent problem solving skills, with demonstrated ability to think outside of the box to find creative solutions.
  • A strong sense of intellectual curiosity and personal initiative
Preferred:
  • A graduate degree in a relevant discipline

The Community Engagement Manager will help UNCF ensure that, through its advocacy efforts, more African-American students will be college ready and better prepared to enroll in and complete college. This person should be an entrepreneurial leader, a strong project manager, and experienced community organizer. 
The Community Engagement Manager will work in a dynamic team environment to execute UNCF's local advocacy efforts, with a focus on building community relationships and impacting the local education environment in one or more of our target advocacy cities. 
This role offers the benefits of working for an established organization with 70 years of history in the education landscape, while also providing an entrepreneurial experience, since the Manager will help establish a "start-up" department tasked with implementing a newly developed strategy. The Community Engagement Manager will be based in one of our target advocacy cities (e.g. DC, New Orleans, and Indianapolis).
The Community Engagement Manager reports to the VP of Advocacy and works closely with the National Director of Advocacy to implement UNCF's advocacy platform, which includes three major components: 
  • Messaging and Research: Leveraging broad-based media platforms and publishing research to highlight the current state of education, motivate African Americans to strive for college degree attainment and position UNCF as a partner in this journey
  • Grasstops Partnerships: Partnering with Member Institutions, prominent organizations and leaders in the African-American community and activate them to engage in the education reform landscape and support them as they engage their communities
  • Grassroots Engagement: Supporting on-the-ground grassroots organizations as they engage African-American parents and communities locally
UNCF's advocacy platform will be implemented at the national and local level. However, the Community Engagement Manager will only be accountable for implementing the strategy at the local level in one or more of UNCF's target cities. 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Creating and implementing an outreach strategy to inform, educate and activate "grasstops" community leaders (i.e., business leaders, elected officials, faith leaders, etc.) about education reform
  • Managing strategic partnerships with "grasstop" leaders, non-profit organizations, civil rights organizations, and donors at the local level
  • Organizing and coordinating the execution of meetings, workshops, and convenings, including setting up databases and processes to implement this work
  • Collaborating with local UNCF development staff to ensure that events and communications align with the advocacy strategy Monitoring changes in the local K-16 landscape and understanding implications for UNCF's advocacy strategy and target city involvement
  • Participating in local education events as well as recommending opportunities for UNCF to demonstrate leadership on African-American K-16 educational issues
  • Working effectively within the prescribed local budget and managing expenditures
  • Documenting and reporting program results in order to evaluate the impact of the advocacy strategy on the local community
  • Providing regular updates to the VP of Advocacy relative to the status of engagement activities and coordinating day-to-day efforts with the Director of Advocacy
EDUCATION
An undergraduate degree from a four year college or university is required. An advanced degree such as an MBA or MPA is preferred.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate is a collaborative individual with significant project management experience and community organizing experience. S/he will be comfortable dealing with the ambiguity associated with strategic implementation and coalition building and should also have the following qualifications:
  • Direct project management and community organizing experience as well as a proven track record of driving programmatic performance
  • Strong organizational skills and a proven track record of managing executing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Well-honed strategic thinking skills with the ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Demonstrated ability to work easily and effectively with a wide range of constituencies at the "grasstops" and "grassroots" levels, including non-profit and community leaders, faith leaders, government officials, corporate leaders, parents and students
  • Superior communication skills, with the ability to proactively lead conversations and manage next steps
  • Working knowledge of K-16 educational landscape at the local level is preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Project, and deep understanding of how to use social media

The Senior Research Associate supports the K-12 research activities of the Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute (FDPRI) by designing and managing research projects associated with K-12 education reform efforts for African American students; collecting, analyzing, interpreting and presenting both quantitative and qualitative data; writing reports, briefs, brochures and other collateral pieces that convey UNCF's position and research knowledge of relevant education reform issues; advising on results and findings and making recommendations for policy, program and development decision-making. 
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaboratively work with FDPRI Advocacy staff to design and conduct research studies that provide cutting-edge and relevant data on K-12 education reform issues that directly affect African American students; 
  • Mine existing UNCF data for trends and findings that can inform UNCF's Advocacy work in local communities and present it in the most impactful format;
  • Author reports, policy briefs, monographs, one-pagers, brochures and other publications to disseminate UNCF's Advocacy research to relevant stakeholders, including UNCF-member institutions, UNCF development officers, parents, education reform organizations and researchers, and local activists.
  • Provide expert consultation to UNCF staff and other collaborative stakeholders about the research findings and best practices around K-12 education reform efforts.
  • Manage data collected to inform Advocacy research. 
  • Generate new or modified perspectives and theories of education policy processes that can build UNCF expertise and contribute to the development of new products or services for Advocacy.
  • Assist in the development of proposals and project budgets for Advocacy.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position will periodically supervise interns
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Master's degree required in the areas of education policy, (preferably in K-12 education), education psychology, education administration or related field and at least two to four years of experience in K-12 education reform organizations and/or activities. Doctoral degree (PhD, or EdD) degree preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Statistical software such as SPSS, or SAS.
Ability to organize and manage information resources; extensive knowledge of research methodology and data analysis using qualitative and quantitative techniques; ability to analyze and interpret research data; and ability to juggle/prioritize multiple tasks.
Other Qualifications: 
Expertise in K-12 education reform issues desired.

SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the director, help represent and advance NARAL's policy views and goals with various constituencies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Within assigned issue areas, track all relevant choice-related activity on Capitol Hill, in the executive branch, and in states. Report key developments, perform policy analysis as needed and, as assigned, advocate NARAL Pro-Choice America's views. (Note: legal representation of NARAL is not required in this position.)
  • With the vice president and other key staff, craft and help carry out legislative strategy on key issues.
  • In selected issue areas, serve as one of the organization's representatives on Capitol Hill. As assigned, lobby and brief congressional staff and members of Congress through in-person meetings, written communications, and phone calls. Work mark-ups, hearings, and votes.
  • Serve as a policy analyst and adviser to state affiliates on key choice-related proposals.
  • Write, edit, and update fact sheets, talking points, letters to policymakers, staff memos, model legislation, testimony, and other key policy and advocacy documents.
  • Contribute to NARAL documents and publications such as Who Decides?, Policy Updates, and the Congressional Record on Choice. Edit copy from other departments.
  • Coordinate policy strategy and activities across NARAL as a whole to maximize benefits to the pro-choice movement and NARAL in particular.
  • Conceive and carry out creative and unique projects that advance NARAL's policy views and raise its profile among key constituencies.
  • As assigned, represent NARAL to progressive partners and coalitions.
  • As assigned, serve as a background source for press inquiries.
  • Liaise with other departments or internal work groups as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Policy Representative:
  • Four-year degree plus four or more years work experience.
  • Policy and/or direct lobbying experience at the state and/or national level.
  • Research and/or policy analysis experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to work as a team with junior colleagues, and ability to meet deadlines consistently with minimal supervision.
