Trust Women is a dynamic, emerging non-profit that focuses on facilitating reproductive freedom in the Midwest and the South. Founded by Julie Burkhart in memory of her dear friend and mentor, the late Dr. George Tiller, Trust Women seeks to honor his life's work by bringing direct services to the middle of the country, as well as addressing issues of access with a reproductive justice perspective through opening reproductive health clinics, educational and community outreach, as well as political advocacy.
We are seeking motivated, take-charge interns who aren't afraid to take the reins and make their own path. To become a Trust Women intern, applicants must be hard-working and dedicated, with a passion for reproductive justice and openness to learning. During their 10 hours, interns must make themselves available to their supervisor and do regular check-ins. We try to structure our virtual internships in such a way that our interns are able to have a fulfilling and educational experience, with the flexibility of working from miles away.
Trust Women also offers traditional in-house internships for interns local to the Wichita, Kansas metro area, as well as interns from outside the area who are able to relocate for the summer. We will also offer home stay arrangements for interns who relocate from outside the metro area. Local interns must work a minimum of 10 hours. Interns with home stay arrangements will be expected to work a minimum of 20 hours.

Organizer & Research Associate, Association of Independent Midwives of Maryland, Baltimore, MD

Organizer & Research Associate

Posted on: June 5, 2013
Posted by: Association of Independent Midwives of Maryland

DESCRIPTION

Maryland is currently one of 7 states where home birth midwives are illegal, a limitation that poses a severe threat to women's reproductive choices in Maryland. This fundamental imposition on birth autonomy removes women's most basic right to decide how, where and with whom she will birth her baby. Our effort is to put that choice back in women's hands by licensing Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) in Maryland. This summer, the Association of Independent Midwives of Maryland will be launching a state-wide campaign to build support for legislation to license CPMs. We are seeking a motivated, activist, feminist intern who will be fired up about making change for women in Maryland. Our ideal candidate will be somewhat familiar with the midwifery model of care and the radical shift it represents from traditional medical obstetric care. She/he will be passionate about protecting a woman's fundamental right to make choices about her body and her birth.

Specifically our intern will work with the legislative team of AIMM to:
  • Mobilize constituents in a state-wide lobbying campaign for licensing midwives in Maryland
  • Provide administrative support and research assistance to the legislative team of AIMM
  • Help build a broad Maryland coalition to support access to midwives
  • Help develop legislation for the coming session to legalize CPMs
DETAILS

We are looking for a 20-hour/week commitment. Hours can be worked flexibly. Ideally early June through late August with flexibility for some travel time off.
  • We would prefer an intern in the Baltimore/DC metro area. Our intern will largely work remotely (needs phone and internet access), on occasion meeting with midwives in cafes or homes. Access to transportation would be a plus.
  • We can offer a $250/month stipend.
  • This is an incredible opportunity to engage in the political/legislative process directly and make meaningful change in Maryland. The home birth midwives of Maryland with whom the intern will be working are a warm and loving bunch who will give back with whole-hearted, earnest support for an intern who commits her/himself to this important cause.
SKILLS

Ideal for a graduate student or law student, top undergrads with tons of passion will be considered.
  • Strong research skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Intern will be interacting with legislators, public health regulators, non-profit coalition partners and home birth families including folks from extreme left and right political positions, Mennonite/Amish and other fundamentalist religious communities and everything in between. S/he must be comfortable in all settings.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office and other basic computer skills
  • Problem-solving, action-oriented qualities
  • Experience in some of the following areas is a plus: organizing, reproductive rights, campaign/legislative processes, coalition-building, law/legal issues.
HOW TO APPLY

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to us at info@aimmmidwives.org. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis.

BACKGROUND
The Center for Reproductive Rights (the "Center"), a global human rights organization founded in 1992 with expertise in constitutional and international law, seeks a Director of Individual Giving to be based in its New York City headquarters. The Director of Individual Giving reports to the Director of Development and joins the fund development team of an innovative and cutting-edge organization committed to promoting the equality, reproductive health, and self-determination of women throughout the world. National-level courts, regional human rights courts, and United Nations bodies have increasingly recognized that a woman's right to reproductive autonomy and reproductive healthcare are basic human rights that must be protected. The Center for Reproductive Rights has played a key role in securing these legal and policy victories and works with attorneys and advocates in the U.S., Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. In addition to its headquarters, the Center has offices in Washington, D.C., Nairobi, Kenya, Bogotá, Colombia, Kathmandu, Nepal, and Geneva, Switzerland. The Center, with a current annual operating budget of approximately $15 million, has a 23-person board of directors and a diverse staff of over 100 professionals from Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Kenya, Korea, Nepal, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sweden, Slovakia, the U.K., and the U.S.
The Director of Individual Giving will be joining the Center at an exciting time for the institution and at a critical time for the nation. In December 2011, the Center's Board adopted a new strategic plan for 2012-2017. This plan was crafted with the input of both Board and staff during a year-long process of external and internal examination and deliberation. The Center has launched a number of bold new initiatives to go on the offense and change the discourse and policy landscape, while significantly expanding its capacity with new programing and ambitious fundraising goals. The Center is led by President and CEO Nancy Northup, who brings a rich mix of experience in public interest law, government service, and women's rights advocacy.
THE POSITION
The Center for Reproductive Rights seeks a highly successful and sophisticated fundraising leader with a commitment to the Center's mission, vision, and values to become its new Director of Individual Giving ("Director"). He or she is hardworking and systems-oriented, with a track record of success in growing individual support across the United States. The Director takes the lead on significantly increasing major gifts revenue, improving and building upon the direct response program, overseeing the research function of the department, and developing a more structured planned giving program. He or she envisions and leads all aspects of the Center's individual giving program, including the gala, and offers creative solutions and develops strategies to implement long and short-term giving goals for all levels of individual donors.
The Director of Individual Giving is an important member of the 10 person Development Department of which three (3) report directly to the Director. In order to develop sound and compelling cases for support, he or she partners with the program staff to remain well-versed in the Center's accomplishments, current priorities, legal developments and emerging issues on both the domestic and international fronts. The Director interacts with the Center's Executive and Management Teams, including the President and CEO, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and the Vice President of Programs. He or she engages with the Board of Directors to leverage their connections and execute personalized cultivation plans, as well as manage external consultants and agencies.
The Director is a results-oriented leader who promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement for the individual giving staff. He or she has strong interpersonal skills, a hands-on management style that can delegate and define job requirements, and the ability to address and solve problems or issues as they arise.
