The Press Associate for Communications and Media Outreach works closely with the Director of Public Affairs to coordinate traditional media communications strategies. This position's duties include assisting in the development of organization-wide publications and media activities. This position works with and in absent of the Director of Public Affairs to assess and respond to incoming media requests and in implementing an aggressive media outreach strategy for the state-based affiliate network. This position coordinates activities with other departments, the affiliates and generates press materials as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Builds and maintains relationships with members of the media;
  • Arranges interviews with the media and NARAL spokespersons;
  • Coordinates message development and dissemination throughout the organization;
  • Support to affiliates for media relations and message strategy;
  • Reviews and edits press releases, quotes, and other official statements;
  • Manages process for collecting daily clips;
  • With approval of the director of public affairs and in absent of the director of public affairs, schedules calls between NARAL Pro-Choice America experts and reporters or producers, and initiates message materials for spokespeople;
  • Participates in ongoing planning activities with internal groups, affiliates, and coalition partners;
  • Develops and maintains organization-wide inventory of message materials for use by national spokespeople, state affiliates, and other key allies;
  • Institutes priorities and timelines for special projects performed by interns.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related/appropriate field of study;
  • 2+ years media-relations experience;
  • Capitol Hill, advocacy, or campaign experience is ideal;
  • Proven ability to develop and disseminate messaging;
  • Attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Fluency in Spanish highly desired;
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to handle multiple projects;
  • Commitment to NARAL Pro-Choice America's goal of building a political constituency to protect and promote the right of all women to exercise the full range of their reproductive choices, including abortion;
  • Experience with writing on new-media platforms and social networks;
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Access, Excel, and other programs highly desirable. Commitment to NARAL Pro-Choice America's mission and goals.

TORCH Program Intern, NARAL Pro-Choice NY, New York, NY

POSITION AVAILABLE:
Early January through June 30th, 2013*
*Opportunity to continue through the Summer.

REPORTS TO: Youth Coordinator

HOURS:
10-15 hours per week**
**Tuesdays between 1-6pm (MANDATORY)
**Availability on Monday and Thursday strongly preferred.

COMPENSATION:
This position is UNPAID. We will help secure academic credit if applicable.

SUMMARY
The Teen Outreach Reproductive Challenge, known as TORCH®, is a nationally recognized program that combines peer sexual and reproductive health education and leadership training for New York City youth. TORCH Peer Leaders build their self-esteem, develop leadership skills, and learn to make responsible choices. Then they share their knowledge with other teens by facilitating workshops around New York City.

The Continuing Education Meetings are held every Tuesdays between the hours of 4-6pm. These meetings are designed to increase educational opportunities for a diverse group of young people, continue training on gaps in knowledge and skills and to expose the group to various topics they request related to Sexual Reproductive Health issues.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Interns provide hands-on assistance to a diverse and dynamic group of high school students from all five boroughs of New York City who are involved in this nationally recognized program.

  • Assist TORCH staff in designing and planning weekly session agendas for Tuesday meetings.
  • Help develop and organize resource materials for Peer Leaders.
  • Assist with program evaluation efforts.
  • Track outreach efforts and their results.
  • Mentor TORCH peer leadership positions.
  • Travel to workshop locations to observe Peer Leader workshops.
  • Assist TORCH Program staff with other tasks as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An understanding and enjoyment of working directly with a diverse group of adolescents.
  • Experience and comfort facilitating youth programs, specifically around sexuality education.  
  • Strong personal commitment to youth development and sexual and reproductive health/rights/justice issues.
  • Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health/adolescent sexuality.
·       Flexibility and creativity to work well with a small team of staff and interns.
  • Research and computer skills, e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and data entry.
  • Time, organizational and management skills.
  • Graduate students encouraged to apply.

HOURS: 15-20 hours per week, flexible scheduling available Monday-Friday 10-6.

SUMMARY

The Political Intern is responsible for supporting NARAL Pro-Choice NY’s legislative advocacy strategy to advance reproductive rights in New York State. He or she will also assist in NARAL Pro-Choice NY’s preparations for the 2014 election.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  •   Research lawmakers and legislation. Advise NARAL staff on findings.
  •   Assist in the creation of educational materials for lawmakers.
  •   Collaborate with other members of the Political and Legislative Affairs team in planning a
    pro-choice lobby day in Albany.
  •   Research candidates running throughout New York State.
  •   Facilitate the candidate questionnaire process and correspond with campaigns.
  •   Maintain databases. 

    QUALIFICATIONS
  •   Passion for social justice and reproductive rights.
  •   A strong interest in the legislative and political processes.
  •   Eagerness to learn.
  •   Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  •   Research experience.
  •   Confidence in using Microsoft Office programs, particularly Excel.
  •   Detail-oriented and organized.

DESCRIPTION


The Membership Associate is responsible for the day-to-day administrative support of the membership program. The person in this position will serve as the main point of contact for NARAL Pro-Choice America members each day. She/he is responsible for the daily tracking of all membership revenue, as well as the management of the sustainer and acknowledgement programs. The Membership Associate is also responsible for performing various database operations for the membership program and providing administrative support for the workplace giving and planned giving programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Addresses member service concerns via phone, email and mail, ensuring any necessary follow-up.
  • Processes membership donations and tracks all revenue from the membership program on a daily basis.
  • Processes and tracks all membership invoices, postage requests, check requests and purchase orders.
  • Manages administrative aspects of the online program, including the creation and implementation of source codes, and the creation and maintenance of online donation forms.
  • Oversees acknowledgement program, including oversight of outside vendor and regular updates of acknowledgment copy.
  • Oversees day-to-day operations of the sustainer program.
  • Performs various database tasks for the membership program, including but not limited to telemarketing credit card uploads, source code uploads, and end-of-campaign telemarketing uploads.
  • Attends all membership strategy and implementation meetings.
  • Provides administrative and data support for the workplace giving and planned giving programs.
  • Assists Deputy Director for Membership with PAC FEC reporting as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • College degree required
  • 1-2 years nonprofit, membership relevant experience preferred.
  • 1-2 years of database experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Excel and Word software required.
  • Knowledge of eCRM systems, especially Convio preferred.
  • Must be able to utilize databases and organize complex records.
  • Knowledge of diverse groups, working with a multicultural workforce and sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural differences is required.
  • Clear understanding of and commitment to NARAL Pro-Choice America's mission and goals.

SUMMARY

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington seeks a Development Director to manage and develop an annual fundraising plan, including cultivating and developing major and mid-level donor relationships, organizing events, managing a fundraising calendar, and overseeing a database. This position is based in Seattle and reports directly to the Executive Director. The right candidate will have a solid background in fundraising, including event management, proposal writing and financial reporting, donor cultivation and use of technology to enhance fundraising.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan, organize and implement the major donor plan. This person will staff the executive director in major donor efforts and makemajor donor calls and visits when necessary and appropriate.
  • Establish innovative strategies to promote giving to NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, focusing on attracting and increasing major and mid-level donors.
  • Manage and ensure the accurate maintenance of records and donor information in the donor database.
  • Organize and serve as the main point person for major organizational fundraising events
  • Oversee weekly upkeep and population of fundraising database and records, proposal and report files, and gift processing
  • Develop strategy for new online and social media fundraising initiatives
  • Help shape organizational strategy and play a leadership role in implementing the organization's strategic plan
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • A strong and demonstratedcommitment to the fundamental right for a woman to choose a safe and legal abortion as a part of a full range of reproductive choices.
  • Three years of professional fundraising experience in a non-profit or political organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate and manage individual donations.
  • Proven management and leadership capabilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Track record of identifying needs and opportunities, instinct to take initiative and be a self-starter
  • Must gain job satisfaction from designing and executing aggressive and creative donor and member programs in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks at once
  • Successful experience with and knowledge of social justice and women's donor communities (foundation and individual)
  • Strategic thinker with ability to manage short term and long term plans and goals, with a record of achieving results.
