ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) offers educational programs to provide young women with an opportunity to analyze and explore leadership through rigorous coursework, experiential and skill based learning, and youth-designed activism projects. Every aspect of the program is designed to support and develop young women to both visualize themselves as leaders and actualize their leadership.

Our mission is to strengthen, empower, and equip young women as agents of change in their lives and the world. By increasing the participation of young women in social, political and economic decision making, SNLP seeks to question and redefine the nature of leadership, and to promote perspectives and practices that are cooperative, accountable, ethical, and effective.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Dean Leadership Training Program is a skill-based internship opportunity to gain hands-on youth work and facilitation experience. Deans should demonstrate clear leadership experience, as well as, an interest in women's and girls' leadership, social justice, youth development, education, feminism, and non-profit work. The position offers a unique and exciting learning experience, which is fun, dynamic, and challenging. Eligible dean applicants must be young women who are either:

• Recent college graduates (2014 graduates and non-masters candidates)
• Current Juniors/Seniors at 4-year colleges
• Graduates of 2-year colleges
• 3-4 years out of high school

We are seeking applicants for 2 separate programs/sites:

• Summer Institute - Newark, NJ & New York City, 6 weeks
• Ready S.E.T. Go! - New York City, 4 weeks

Please read the descriptions below carefully. *Limited scholarships for housing support will be considered for out of state applicants based on need.*

Summer Institute (Newark, NJ & New York City)

The Summer Institute is a 6 week leadership and educational program for high school aged young women. Program participants take rigorous academic and creative classes, meet women representing a wide range of leadership, participate in workshops on relevant issues, and explore leadership and their identities. During the Summer Institute, Deans will work closely with young women for a total of 9 weeks (including an initial 3 week training period) and will receive a stipend of $2,800. This position is available in both Newark, New Jersey and New York City. Please note that we cannot guarantee site placement until the time of hire. However, if you are from the New Jersey and/or the Newark area, please make this clear on your application as we are seeking community representation in the Newark program. We are currently seeking Deans for this position to work from June 15th to August 14th 2015.

Ready S.E.T. Go! (Summer Empowerment Training) New York City

S.E.T. is a 4 week advanced and intensive leadership program for young women who have already completed the Summer Institute in New York City. S.E.T. offers a deeper focus on understanding social justice issues, hands-on leadership work, and practical leadership and life skills. The program is designed to help participants become stronger leaders and activists. During the S.E.T. program, Deans will work closely with high school (and some college) aged women (ages 14-22) for a total of 7 weeks (including the same initial 3 week training period) and will receive a stipend of $2,200. We are currently seeking Deans for this position to work from June 15th to July 31st 2015.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

• Strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail
• Demonstrate leadership and achievement in academic, professional, extracurricular or volunteer settings
• Ability to work effectively with diverse groups in terms of ideologies, race, religion, class, sexual orientation, nationality, and ability
• Creative, good humored, independent, flexible and mature
• Interested in both the social activism as well as female youth development aspects of the program
• Preferably have experience working with youth, especially young women (ages 14-22)
• Comfortable with and excited about our mission and goals and are able to put them into practice

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a full-time position taking place Monday through Friday, approximately 40 hours per week (with varying hours depending on programmatic necessities).

Deans will:

• Be assigned a mentee group of 8-10 young women
• Serve as a teaching assistant in an assigned academic or creative course
• Lead workshops and facilitate group discussions
• Support both programmatic and administrative aspects of the organization

In honor of pioneering feminist economist Mariam K. Chamberlain (MKC), IWPR offers a fellowship in public policy to a promising scholar each year. The MKC Fellow contributes to a variety of research projects to inform policies affecting women.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Reviewing and compiling literature and information.
• Collecting, checking and analyzing data.
• Preparing reports and report graphics.
• Fact checking and editing.
• Attending relevant Congressional briefings, policy seminars and meetings.
• Fellows are responsible for a certain amount of general office work, including tasks such as responding to information requests, photocopying, assisting in maintaining the library and research files, and answering telephones.

RESEARCH AREAS for 2015-2016

• The quality of women's jobs, including wages, paid sick leave, paid family leave, and workplace flexibility.
• Increasing access to higher education and non-traditional jobs for low-income women and women with children.
• Examining socioeconomic supports for women in job training programs, and for college students with children.
• Older women's economic issues, including social security and retirement plans.
• The economic status of women and girls, women of color, and immigrant women across the United States.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Applicants should have at least a bachelor's degree in a social science discipline (such as sociology, psychology, education, or public policy), statistics, economics, mathematics or women's studies. Graduate work is not required.
• Applicants should have strong quantitative and library research skills and knowledge of women's issues; familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
• Knowledge of STATA, SPSS, SAS, or graphics software a plus.
• Qualitative and or survey research experience also a plus.

Compensation for the fellowship is $27,000 before taxes over the 9-month period, plus health insurance and a public transportation stipend. The position is full-time and generally spans the academic year (September–May), though starting and ending dates are somewhat flexible.
