ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

The Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) offers educational programs to provide young women with an opportunity to analyze and explore leadership through rigorous coursework, experiential and skill based learning, and youth-designed activism projects. Every aspect of the program is designed to support and develop young women to both visualize themselves as leaders and actualize their leadership. Our mission is to strengthen, empower, and equipyoung women as agents of change in their lives and the world.

POSITION OVERVIEWS

Faculty teach the coursework component of the Summer Institute, an award-winning program that enables high school aged youth to develop ideas, questions, and concerns as they explore leadership, social justice and activism. We are interested in courses that connect with our mission and also connect with the identities of the young women in SNLP. We are seeking faculty to teach either a CORE CLASS or a CREATIVE/ACADEMIC class from JULY 6th to AUGUST 14th 2015.

CORE CLASSES

These classes are the cornerstone of the Summer Institute and all young people attend them. Curriculum exists for the core classes but the faculty member will be required to develop and facilitate additional units and to modify and adapt existing units as needed. The core classes are as follows:

• Leadership Seminar(LS) - This course examines assumptions about leadership, and redefines leadership as accountable, cooperative, ethical, and effective. Youth examine their own leadership styles, set agendas for their own leadership development, and understand the potential of exercising their leadership TODAY.
• Power, Identity, and Privilege (PIP) - This course exposes youth to social justice theories, frameworks, and vocabulary. Students ask and answer questions such as "Is identity fixed or changing?" "Are concepts like race., class, gender, etc... real or constructs?" "What does power look like and what could it look like?" "What is privilege and how do you deal with it?"
• Leadership Action Project (LAP) - This course challenges young women to work collectively to design and execute a social justice "action" project that addresses a critical issue they see affecting them and their communities. This is a project based class that shares best practices of youth activism and culminates in a 1 day action. (Course held in Newark Summer Institute only)

CREATIVE/ACADEMIC CLASSES

These classes follow an elective-type format, and each participant selects one creative and one academic class. Creative and academic faculty design their own curriculum based on their own expertise and interests. We select courses that are rigorous, engaging, and relevant to the young women we work with. Courses should employ popular education approaches and be highly interactive.

Creative Courses – These courses should have a hands-on focus on the arts (music, dance, visual arts, theater, writing, etc…) Past examples include:

• Free in My Body – Dance & Movement Residency
• Poetic Revolutionaries – Young Women Explore Voice and Power
• The Power to Create – A Visual Arts Experiment

Academic Courses – These courses should explore different subjects, social issues, or topics through a critical lens. Past examples include:

• Critical Feminist Analysis of Hip-Hop
• Mass Incarceration in the 21st Century: A Feminist Analysis of the Criminal (In)Justice System
• Untangling Our Roots: Politics of Hair

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for faculty members who:

• Are experienced youth workers or teaching artists -- can set high expectations for students, can make material relevant and engaging, and can create a safe space and a sense of community within their classrooms
• Can relate to, and build with, young women from New York City and Newark, NJ
• Can teach twice a week for 6 weeks (from July 6th to August 14th) and be able to students for at least 1 hour per week outside of class
• Will commit to attending 10 hours of mandatory professional development training on June 24th and June 30th, 2015.

Please note: Positions are available in both New York City, and Newark, New Jersey and placements will be made at the discretion of SNLP. Only apply if you are willing to work at either site you are placed. Both sites are accessible by public transportation. Please note the salaries for each program vary.

• Core Faculty -- $3,000 in Newark, $2,800 in New York City

The Dean Leadership Training Program is a skill-based internship opportunity to gain hands-on youth work and facilitation experience. The position offers a unique and exciting learning experience, which is fun, dynamic, and challenging. Eligible dean applicants must be young women who are either:

Summer Institute (Newark, NJ & New York City)

The Summer Institute is a 6 week leadership and educational program for high school aged young women. Program participants take rigorous academic and creative classes, meet women representing a wide range of leadership, participate in workshops on relevant issues, and explore leadership and their identities. During the Summer Institute, Deans will work closely with young women for a total of 9 weeks (including an initial 3 week training period) and will receive a stipend of $2,800. This position is available in both Newark, New Jersey and New York City. Please note that we cannot guarantee site placement until the time of hire. However, if you are from the New Jersey and/or the Newark area, please make this clear on your application as we are seeking community representation in the Newark program. We are currently seeking Deans for this position to work from June 15th to August 14th 2015.

Ready S.E.T. Go! (Summer Empowerment Training) New York City

S.E.T. is a 4 week advanced and intensive leadership program for young women who have already completed the Summer Institute in New York City. S.E.T. offers a deeper focus on understanding social justice issues, hands-on leadership work, and practical leadership and life skills. The program is designed to help participants become stronger leaders and activists. During the S.E.T. program, Deans will work closely with high school (and some college) aged women (ages 14-22) for a total of 7 weeks (including the same initial 3 week training period) and will receive a stipend of $2,200. We are currently seeking Deans for this position to work from June 15th to July 31st 2015.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

• Strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail
• Demonstrate leadership and achievement in academic, professional, extracurricular or volunteer settings
• Ability to work effectively with diverse groups in terms of ideologies, race, religion, class, sexual orientation, nationality, and ability
• Creative, good humored, independent, flexible and mature
• Interested in both the social activism as well as female youth development aspects of the program
• Preferably have experience working with youth, especially young women (ages 14-22)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a full-time position taking place Monday through Friday, approximately 40 hours per week (with varying hours depending on programmatic necessities).

Deans will:

• Be assigned a mentee group of 8-10 young women
• Serve as a teaching assistant in an assigned academic or creative course
• Lead workshops and facilitate group discussions
• Support both programmatic and administrative aspects of the organization

The ELLA Fellowship Program is based on SNLP's central philosophy that opportunities for community leadership are integral to addressing issues affecting young women.

The ELLA (Engage, Learn, Lead, and Act) Fellowship, named for civil rights leader, Ella Baker, offers young women aged 16-22 the opportunity to develop and implement their own leadership project with specialized guidance from SNLP. The Fellowship includes a generous award and additional allowance to implement a social justice project that addresses issues in the Fellow's community. All Fellows are required to attend monthly retreats, committing to a 9-month Fellowship cycle starting in October and culminating in June with a project showcase.

In order to be eligible, youth must:

• Be a self-identified young woman between the ages of 16 and 22
• Have at least 2 years of prior leadership experience
• Commit to attending monthly retreats in the New York City area
• Identify a mentor to support your community-based work
• Be a self-motivated, passionate, and committed individual that wants to make change in your community
• Have a good understanding of a social justice issue affecting a community you belong to
• Desire to develop leadership skills and increase your self confidence

DESCRIPTION

Sadie Nash Leadership Project is seeking a dynamic, energetic and qualified Program Associate for our Newark, NJ team. The Program Associate will work closely with the Program Coordinator to plan and implement social justice based programs for young women (ages 14-22). The Program Associate will also directly support afterschool and summer programs while building meaningful and healthy relationships with participants and the larger Newark community.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop curriculum and facilitate leadership and social justice programming for young women in SNLP programs
• Manage SNLP internship program including training youth, establishing strong partnerships with local organizations, and evaluating program and conducting site visits
• Support outreach and selection initiatives for all programs
• Recruit, train, and support summer staff
• Assist with field trips, college visits, and special events
• Provide informal mentoring and support to participants and alums
• Co-develop new programming and initiatives to best meet the needs of participants

POSITION OVERVIEW

Seeking a dynamic and qualified SAT instructor to work in collaboration with the Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) in Newark, NJ. Instructor will develop and facilitate a class focusing on substantive components of the SAT exam as well as stress management and social justice topics.
The course should primarily focus on increasing students' confidence, knowledge, and test taking skills. It should also include some stress management techniques and provide some exploration of social justice issues surrounding the SAT. (Examples: Debates around racial and gender disparity in testing).

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan and implement interactive and youth centered SAT prep curriculum
• Track, document and assess young women's progress by reviewing test scores and conducting informal check-in's
• Ability to adapt instruction to meet varying levels and or needs

Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) is a unique educational and leadership program for young women aged 14-22. At SNLP, we believe that every young woman is a leader, and we offer programs and classes to further develop that leadership.

We are currently seeking experienced and creative educators to facilitate leadership classes in SNLP's Partnership Program in New York City. Through the Partnership Program, SNLP partners with schools and community-based organizations in the New York area to offer courses in leadership, social justice, youth activism and self-empowerment. SNLP's Partnership Program is especially committed to supporting harder-to-reach youth throughout New York City.

Major responsibilities of Partnership Faculty include:

• Facilitating a social justice oriented curriculum focusing on leadership, identity, feminism, and issues facing young women
• Facilitating a class that meets regularly, once or twice a week at a school or community based organization. Classes are typically held during the school day or after school hours
• Attending ALL staff development meetings and individualized program support meetings, regularly held on Friday mornings every 2-3 weeks
• Regularly documenting and reporting student attendance and progress
• Serving as a liaison between SNLP and the partnership site

The ideal candidate:

• Has at least two years of prior experience working with high school aged youth
• Is passionate about the feminist and social justice values of the Sadie Nash model
• Is a skilled facilitator and youth worker
• Is flexible, dynamic, responsible, mature, and detail oriented
• Is punctual, reliable, and organized

Faculty will receive an hourly rate of $40/hr and will be compensated at a rate of $20/hr for staff meetings. All educators receive one hour of paid prep per week at $40/hr.

OVERVIEW

Sadie Nash Leadership Project, an award-winning leadership development program for low-income young women, is seeking a new Executive Director. Founded in 2002, Sadie Nash (SNLP) has the mission to strengthen, empower and equip young women as agents for change in their own lives and in the world. By increasing the participation of women in social, political and economic decision-making, SNLP seeks to redefine the nature of leadership and promote practices that are cooperative, accountable, ethical and effective.

With an annual operating budget approaching $1 million, SNLP has served more than 2,000 young women during its 11 years, and annually reaches more than 500 young leaders, aged 14-22. Programs include Summer Institute, partnerships with schools and social service agencies, after-school programming, internships, youth-led leadership projects, and college support. SNLP currently offers programs to young women living in the five boroughs of New York City and Newark, NJ. A recent empirical study showed that SNLP program graduates are more civically engaged, more socially and politically aware and more motivated toward social justice than peers who have not participated in its programs. This 10-year study also showed a remarkable 80% college completion rate among SNLP alumnae. Based on its proven track record and growing national profile, SNLP has begun efforts to share its proven model with other organizations around the country through a new replication training program.

SNLP has a tested model of leadership development with a focus on social justice, a creative and energetic staff and a committed Board of Directors, and an exceptionally broad base of supporters that ensure its strong financial position. SNLP's Board now seeks a new Executive Director to lead the organization's next phase of dynamic growth and development.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Working closely with the Board, the Executive Director will plan the strategic development and oversee the implementation of all SNLP programs and activities:

• Core leadership programs for youth, including strategic partnerships and alliances;
• Overall organizational advancement;
• National replication efforts;
• Robust fundraising program;
• Communications and marketing efforts;
• Management and development of professional staff (currently 7 full-time and 30 part-time).

The successful Executive Director of SNLP will seek out strategic opportunities for the organization, stay current on developments in the field of youth development and women's leadership, and network effectively with leading programs across the country. She or he will also orchestrate effective fundraising efforts with institutional and individual donors, and inventively pursue other appropriate revenue options. In the years ahead, the Board expects SNLP to continue its strong trajectory of innovation and impact, growth, and financial stability, and to further fortify its national leadership position.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

• Alignment with the feminist and social justice values and principles of the Sadie Nash model is essential.

• Strong strategic planning skills and proven ability to inspire others and lead organizational advancement required.

• Proven track record of successful fundraising with foundations, corporations and individuals.

• At least ten years of professional experience developing and managing programs required.

• Familiarity with the Greater New York City metropolitan area, including youth programs and funders in this market.

• Experience working with one or more boards of directors.

• Exceptional speaking, writing and presentation skills.

• Demonstrated ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and interests.

• Knowledge of youth development theory and practice strongly preferred.

• Superior organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple competing priorities.

• Desire to work in an informal but highly energetic, outcomes-driven workplace that thrives on entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative practice.

• College degree required, advanced degree in education, youth development or relevant field highly desirable.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Salary is commensurate with experience and competitive in the New York City non-profit market.
All SNLP employees receive full medical and dental health coverage, three (3) weeks paid vacation per year and eleven (11) paid holidays.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) is seeking an experienced, dynamic and compassionate MSW/LSW on a part-time basis to provide emotional and counseling support to young women (ages 14-21) during our 6 week Summer Institute program in Newark, NJ. This unique opportunity will allow the social worker to work closely with young women in a safe, supportive, inclusive, and non-judgmental environment that promotes healthy communication and healthy relationships. SNLP believes that young women are experts in their own lives and we use a strengths-based approach to help our youth problem-solve and resolve conflict while actualizing their leadership and potential.

The social worker will be responsible for conducting one-on-one sessions, group sessions and/or larger workshops on emotional wellness or other relevant topics according to the needs of the program constituents.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide case management, counseling, advocacy, and other services as needed;

• Maintain written and computerized records, compile reports and complete other program documentation (i.e. progress notes, incident reports, etc.);
• Coordinate and monitor referrals to community services and advocate youth participation;
• Develop creative ways for youth to practice and strengthen problem solving, communication, and coping skills;
• Lead groups and workshops on topics relevant to community;
• Work effectively and constructively as part of a team;
• Perform related work as assigned;

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• A Master's Degree in Social Work
• At least 2 years experience working with youth
• Familiarity with mandated reporting policies in NJ and knowledge base of community resources
• Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills
• Fluency in Spanish is a plus
• Ability to work collaboratively

Details:

• Program dates: July 8th - August 16th, 2013
• Training: June 28th, 10 am – 5 pm
• Hours: 4-6 hours a week, Monday and Thursday afternoons, flexible schedule preferred
• Compensation: $50/hr
