ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

The Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) offers educational programs to provide young women with an opportunity to analyze and explore leadership through rigorous coursework, experiential and skill based learning, and youth-designed activism projects. Every aspect of the program is designed to support and develop young women to both visualize themselves as leaders and actualize their leadership. Our mission is to strengthen, empower, and equipyoung women as agents of change in their lives and the world.

POSITION OVERVIEW


Faculty teach the coursework component of the Summer Institute, an award-winning program that enables high school aged youth to develop ideas, questions, and concerns as they explore leadership, social justice and activism. We are interested in courses that connect with our mission and also connect with the identities of the young women in SNLP. We are seeking faculty to teach either a CORE CLASS or a CREATIVE CLASS from JULY 7th to AUGUST 1st 2014.

CORE CLASSES: These classes are the cornerstone of the program and all young people attend them. Curriculum exists for the core classes but the faculty member will be required to develop and facilitate additional units and to modify and adapt existing units as needed. The core classes are as follows:

• Social Justice Core – This course focuses on different types of activism, examines social justice movements, current issues, and identifies careers in social justice. This course will explore concepts of "feminism" "social justice" and "community."

• Action Project Core – This course develops the activist skills and strategies necessary to create and implement a social justice project or campaign. The class culminates with a community action completely facilitated and led by young people.

CREATIVE CLASSES: These classes follow an elective-type format, and each participant selects one creative course of their interest. Creative faculty design their own curriculum based on their own expertise and interests. We select courses that are rigorous, engaging, and relevant to the young women we work with. Courses should employ popular education approaches and be highly interactive.

• Creative Courses– These courses should have a hands-on focus on the arts (music, dance, visual arts, theater, writing, etc…) Past examples include:
  • Free in My Body – Dance & Movement Residency
  • Guerrilla Street Art – Young Women Claim Space in NYC
  • Herstory: Devising Theatre – An Interactive Space to Create Activist theatre

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for faculty members who:

• Are experienced youth workers or teaching artists, can set high expectations for students, can make material relevant and engaging, and can create a safe space and a sense of community within their classrooms
• Can relate to, and build with, young women from New York City
• Can teach three times a week for CORE or teach twice a week for CREATIVE and be able to students for at least 1 hour per week outside of class
• Will commit to attending 6-10 hours of mandatory professional development training on June 25^th and July 2^nd, 2014

Please note the salaries for each course vary.

• Core Faculty - $1,500 and Creative Faculty - $1,000

3. For SET CORE: Please attach a one session proposal. It should focus on a historical or contemporary case study illustrating the concepts of the class. It could highlight a leader, a movement, a contemporary news story, a film, etc… Please include a detailed agenda with activities, discussion questions, etc… as well as the outcomes you hope to achieve in this session and the themes (ie: intersectionality, pitfalls of traditional leadership, etc…) you hope to address
4. For SET CREATIVE: Please attach a one-page proposal for the course you are interested in teaching. It should include a description of the course. It should also include a brief rationale as to how it fits into the overall mission of SNLP, our philosophy or goals. It should address the outcomes you hope to achieve over the course of the summer program, and it should present a brief 8 session outline for the course. (You do not need to describe each class, but please show the direction of the course and the topics you expect to cover)

The deadline for faculty applications is Monday, March 10th 2014.

By increasing the participation of young women in social, political and economic decision making, SNLP seeks to question and redefine the nature of leadership, and to promote perspectives and practices that are cooperative, accountable, ethical, and effective.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) is seeking an experienced, dynamic and compassionate MSW/LSW on a part-time basis to provide emotional and counseling support to young women (ages 14-21) during our 6 week Summer Institute program in Newark, NJ. This unique opportunity will allow the social worker to work closely with young women in a safe, supportive, inclusive, and non-judgmental environment that promotes healthy communication and healthy relationships. SNLP believes that young women are experts in their own lives and we use a strengths-based approach to help our youth problem-solve and resolve conflict while actualizing their leadership and potential.

The social worker will be responsible for conducting one-on-one sessions, group sessions and/or larger workshops on emotional wellness or other relevant topics according to the needs of the program constituents.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide case management, counseling, advocacy, and other services as needed;

• Maintain written and computerized records, compile reports and complete other program documentation (i.e. progress notes, incident reports, etc.);
• Coordinate and monitor referrals to community services and advocate youth participation;
• Develop creative ways for youth to practice and strengthen problem solving, communication, and coping skills;
• Lead groups and workshops on topics relevant to community;
• Work effectively and constructively as part of a team;
• Perform related work as assigned;

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• A Master's Degree in Social Work
• At least 2 years experience working with youth
• Familiarity with mandated reporting policies in NJ and knowledge base of community resources
• Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills
• Fluency in Spanish is a plus
• Ability to work collaboratively

• Program dates: July 8th - August 16th, 2013
• Training: June 28th, 10 am – 5 pm
• Hours: 4-6 hours a week, Monday and Thursday afternoons, flexible schedule preferred
• Compensation: $50/hr

DESCRIPTION

Jessie's - The June Callwood Centre for Young Women is a multi-service resource centre for pregnant
teenagers, young parents, and their children. Jessie's Centre operates from a feminist perspective. We
strive to demonstrate our commitment to feminism, anti-oppression and positive social change in every
aspect of our structure and functioning.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide informal support to pregnant and parenting youth
• Accompany youth to appointments in the community
• Assist youth in completing application forms for community resources
• Work closely and build relationships with youth facing a variety of barriers as young parents that
often prevent them from accessing affordable, suitable housing for their families.
• Support our youth during housing searches by looking through local rental ads with the youth,
calling landlords, accompanying youth to view apartment units and advocating on behalf of the
youth with landlords when necessary
• Provide assistance accessing income supports, including accompaniments to welfare intake
and advocacy with welfare workers.
• Develop an understanding of housing rights and responsibilities and provide this education and
information to the youth on her caseload.
• Work to prevent eviction, including advocacy with landlords and assistance at the Landlord
Tenant Board.
• Answer calls and provide welcoming and informal support at reception
• Provide care and support to infants and toddlers in nursery
• Support summer outings, groups and swap shop
• Document in files and participate in case management with multi-disciplinary team

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA 

The Government of Canada has strict eligibility criteria for these positions. Applicants must be:
• between 15 and 30 years of age;
• registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year (2012/2013) and intend to return
to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year (2013/2014);
• are Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have official refugee protection status under
the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (foreign students are not eligible); and
• are legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and
regulations.

REQUIREMENTS

• Some professional and/or personal experience working with youth
• Understanding issues and barriers relating to pregnant and parenting youth; non-judgmental,
pro-choice approach to sex, birth control, parenting, abortion, adoption
• Positive and friendly demeanor
• Physically able to lift up to 35lbs
• Ability to pass a vulnerable persons police check
• Second language considered an asset


Start Date: early June 2013
End Date: late August 2013
Wage rate: $15.00
Hours: dependent on funding
