Program Interns work closely with the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice's Program Team to learn about and contribute to our support of over 130 grassroots LGBTQI groups around the world. Program Interns receive training and guidance on our progressive grantmaking model and learn about LGBTQI, feminist and social justice movements globally. Interns can expect to be involved in a variety of aspects of Astraea's grantmaking, capacity building and leadership development, and philanthropic advocacy programs, including:
  • Researching conditions experienced by LGBTQI communities in the U.S. and internationally;
  • Drafting grant summaries for review in grantmaking decisions;
  • Responding to inquiries from potential applicants;
  • Producing written and visual content about Astraea's programs and grantee partners;
  • Monitoring social media and identifying opportunities to amplify grantee partners' work;
  • Coordinating community briefings by visiting activists;
  • Assisting with grants processing and awards;
  • Translating key documents to facilitate outreach and communication with grantee partners; and,
  • Special projects as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ideal candidates for the Program Intern position have a deep commitment to Astraea's work and social justice values, strong writing and communications skills, and experience with LGBTQI, social justice or human rights work. Astraea particularly seeks interns with Spanish or other language proficiency, in addition to English.
TIME COMMITMENT/COMPENSATION
Interns are sought for the fall semester and, if possible, to continue through the spring. Arrangements can be made to work between 10 and 20 hours per week.
Internships, while unpaid, are structured as meaningful learning experiences. Limited transit stipend via metro cards is available and is awarded on a first come first serve basis. School credits are accepted.

Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice (New York, NY) seeks a seasoned grant writer to support our fundraising efforts to fuel a global campaign for LGBTQI inclusion and respect. This grant writer will lead the efforts to secure over $5.5 million in this fiscal year (starting July 1, 2014) in funding from foundations, donor-advised funds, and governments as part of a multi-year, $20-million dollar growth investment campaign, Fueling the Frontlines (www.fuelingthefrontlines.org). The structure for this position is currently flexible: we are looking for between 20 hours/week to full time, and will consider a contract or staff position. This position reports to the Director of Development
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and write grant proposals to foundation and other grant-making organizations, persuasively communicating Astraea's mission and programs to potential funders.
  • Work in partnership with the Development Associate to assemble and submit grant requests including letters, proposals, budgets, interim and final reports.
  • Manage all foundation applications and reports ensuring compliance with foundation reporting requirements and Astraea guidelines and deadlines.
  • Conduct prospect research to support institutional funding for the campaign.
  • Manage a grants workplan and calendar
QUALIFICATIONS
Note: only those who meet the minimum requirements of the job will be considered for the position.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience is required.
  • Ability to seek and synthesize information; and craft funding proposals in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and research skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, and strong understanding of fundraising databases; working knowledge of The Raiser's Edge and Foundation Center Online a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, independently, proactively, creatively and respectfully with multiple constituencies and audiences.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice and confidence in ability to enhance that mission.
  • Experience working in or volunteering with a social justice organization.

DESCRIPTION
Provides administrative support to the Astraea office, including HR, IT, office management, and reception.
JOB DUTIES
  • Responsible for certain fiscal responsibilities, including sorting, all incoming checks, donation checks and non-donation checks, as well as keeping a log of the check information, documenting and making copies of them and depositing them.
  • Generate and process general invoices to all tenants, vendors and contractors, including either distributing invoices or creating a check request and getting appropriate approval for the check requests to be submitted to the fiscal department for payment of invoices.
  • Responsible for all incoming and out-going mail, including distributing incoming mail, faxes and packages; maintenance of the mail meter machine including ensuring the postage machine has adequate postage and that outgoing mail is sent. Coordinate pick up of packages.
  • Manage inventory and vendor relationships for all office, kitchen, and maintenance supplies and equipment (including, copiers, fax machines, utensils, condiments, etc.). Conducts research, reviews contracts with existing vendors, obtains quotes, and makes recommendations regarding new vendors and office equipment.
  • File vendor agreements, contracts, etc. Sets up contract and service agreements. Schedule maintenance and repairs. Work with IT vendors to set up accounts and address needs of the phone system and network.
  • Manage the office maintenance on a day-to-day basis, including interacting with building maintenance and cleaning vendors, ensuring general upkeep of the office and supplies, organizing cleaning days and committees for setting/cleaning up for in-office gatherings.
  • Support setting up and orienting new employees and resolving questions and problems.
  • Manage the process for keeping track of staff attendance, including overseeing the staff calendar, managing staff time tracking systems, and generating weekly time reports and biweekly accrual reports to monitor staff attendance and time off. Responsible for reviewing, printing and distributing timesheets.
  • Works with the Director of Communications to mange the organization of and access to office technology.
  • Works with the Deputy Director for fiscal, administrative and general operational support as needed.
  • Performs other duties and projects assigned from time to time
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have prior administrative experience of at least 3 years.
  • Experience with Human Resource system a plus
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel; Databases and other computer programs a plus.
  • Experience with office management.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of mail processes such as postage machine, Federal Express and UPS.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage ever-shifting priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Second language a plus.

DESCRIPTION
This is a key position in the Development Department that is responsible for maintaining and increasing support from foundation and government sources. The Development Officer, Institutional Giving will manage all aspects of foundation and government funding, including maintaining and increasing grants from these sectors, developing proposals and reports, cultivating current relationships, as well as conducting prospect research and approaching new funders. This position requires a strategic thinker with excellent writing and editing skills. The successful candidate will be able to multi-task, meet deadlines, and have a collaboration work style.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Manage all reports, proposals and correspondence with foundation and government funders ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Develop detailed and compelling written proposals and project budgets.
    • Manage annual grants calendar for all proposals, acknowledgements, and reports. Maintain historical records.
    • Manage a calendar for institutional donors and engage development, program and finance staff in the process
    • Cultivate relationships with program officers to further engage them in Astraea's work.
      • Research, identify and cultivate new foundation prospects, including tracking of RFPs and other publicized funding opportunities, outreach by phone and email; submission of letters of inquiry and full proposals, as appropriate.
      • In collaboration with program staff, prepare and submit grant applications to foundations that meet predetermined Astraea income target goals.
      • Build relations with the philanthropic community, donors and peers through networking opportunities and monitor on-going US philanthropic trends.
      • Keep abreast of Astraea's programming through ongoing contact with other staff.
        • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned from time to time.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Demonstrated track record of securing and managing foundation and government grants
  • Minimum of three-five years fundraising experience
  • Strong understanding of the US philanthropic sector; international experience a plus.
  • Proven ability to write clear and compelling proposals, reports and other communications with funders and prospects
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to manage a wide variety of internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to handle multiple and often competing deadlines.
  • Commitment to the work and values of Astraea Foundation.
EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant area or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Advanced degree in relevant field is preferred.
