Reporting directly to the Outreach Services Coordinator, assists with the implementation of outreach programs to the general public, Latino community, farmworkers, IV drug users, and businesses in the Pajaro Valley area in south Santa Cruz County and north Monterey County, or as specified in the grant contract(s).
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Assists with planning, development, and implementation of outreach programs appropriate to the target groups.
  1. Coordinates in the recruitment and training of volunteers to assist with outreach efforts.
  1. Responsible for collection and maintenance of accurate statistics of outreach encounters.
  1. Networks with existing agencies that work closely with the targeted groups to provide information and educational materials.
  1. Assists in developing program criteria, direction, and goals for the respective target groups.
  1. May assist in the research and preparation of reports, grant proposals, budgets, evaluation instruments, and other written communications required.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of: the needs of the Latino community, including farmworkers, IV drug users, migrant agricultural workers, etc.; the interventions necessary to reach this community in a culturally appropriate and sensitive educational forum; social service programs in this community.
Ability to: promote, develop, and implement a variety of information and education programs; write and speak effectively, including group presentations to target populations; maintain absolute confidentiality; communicate effectively and respectfully with people from different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and lifestyles, demonstrating a knowledge of and sensitivity to their needs, especially to the unique needs which Latinos, women, gay/bisexual men, sex workers, IV drug users, and chemically dependent persons; maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with agency staff, clients, other community agencies, and the public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent;
  • Bilingual Spanish/English; bicultural preferred;
  • 2 year work experience with social service programs, preferably with high risk populations in health education or substance abuse fields;
  • Knowledge of social service programs in the immediate community;
  • Requires own transportation, valid CA driver's license and automobile insurance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Standing, walking, sitting, typing, reaching, bending, moving and/or lifting up to 50 pounds.

MRNY seeks 2 dynamic mission-driven experienced professional staff to provide health insurance enrollment assistance to individuals and small businesses through New York State's Health Benefit Exchange.
MRNY is hiring for 2 positions: 1 Full time (40 hours/week) enrollment specialist in Brooklyn and 1 full time (40 hours/week) enrollment specialist in Staten Island.
THE ORGANIZATION
Make the Road New Yorkbuilds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road operates neighborhood-based community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; and Brentwood, Long Island. With a membership of more than 10,000 low-income New Yorkers, Make the Road tackles the critical issues facing our community: workplace justice, tenants' rights, immigrant civil rights, language-access, LGBTQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform.
MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our Education Department offers ESOL, Spanish-language literacy, and computer literacy, and in-school and after-school youth programs. Our Community Organizing Projects help New Yorkers to implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. And our Department of Legal & Support Services provides direct legal representation, case management, and facilitated enrollment into public health insurance programs, training, and strategic support for members and organizing campaigns. Our attorneys and advocates specialize in labor and employment law, public benefits, disability benefits, housing law, healthcare and health insurance access, immigration, public education, domestic violence, and LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) civil rights issues.
Legal and support services at Make the Road NEW YORK:
The Department of Legal and Support Services at Make the Road New York works to strengthen Make the Road's organizing work by (1) helping to envision and implement leverage strategies (including strategic litigation) that help win our organizing campaigns; (2) providing technical legal support for policy work; and (3) providing legal and support services to draw in new members and help meet the immediate needs of MRNY's active members.
CURRENT OPENING
  • Advise consumers on eligibility for premium subsidies and public health insurance programs, like Medicaid and Child Health Plus
  • Enroll consumers into public and/or private health coverage in the New York Health Benefit Exchange
  • Help consumers choose an appropriate qualified health plan
  • Educate consumers on their benefits and responsibilities under the Affordable Care Act
  • Make sure all applications are accurately completed and submitted on time, adhering to submission deadlines
  • Maintain thorough case records of services provided, advice and/or referrals
  • Schedule and maintain appointments with potentially eligible consumers
  • Meet productivity and quality performance targets
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and trainings
  • Conduct community outreach to potential enrollees
  • Work with other MRNY staff to envision and implement ways to support and mobilize MRNY members around health-related issues.
  • Work with health team to identify health issues of concern and develop strategy/carry out initiatives to solve systemic problems in the health system
REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience: A minimum of one year experience providing assistance to consumers and/or advocates on health insurance and health care access issues
  • Experience conducting outreach to recruit eligible participants in large numbers
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in public health, public administration or a related field
  • Fully Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment
  • High level of accountability and initiative; needs to be a self-starter and eager to do team work to support the organization as a whole
  • Ability to work under pressure during deadlines
  • Ability to work in more than one work site
  • Flexible work schedule, some evenings or weekends required
  • Strong computer skills (web-based database, word processing, Excel, etc.)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be willing and able to work in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic work environment
  • A commitment to collective action and community organizing

DESCRIPTION

This position will work within the Community Health Action Department to provide programmatic and administrative support for the Youth Center, targeting Young Latino Men who have Sex with Men (YLMSM) and Young Latino Transgender Women (YLTG) 18 – 29). Assist Program Manager in tailoring, adapting and co-facilitating small group-level intervention curriculum for the Latino population living with HIV and in developing and implementing communication strategies that increase traditional and new media covered of social marketing campaign. The Associate will administer oral HIV antibody tests and provide test results.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Two-year college or equivalent combination of education and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in facilitating support groups and coordination of small groups activities working in a Latino community and diverse populations. Ability to develop and maintain positive communication lines with La ClĂ­nica del Pueblo's various in-house programs and manage phone/face-to-face crisis situations. Good writing skills in Spanish English and strong communication skills. Experience with word processing, database and spreadsheet software programs.

Salary Range: $31,517 to $36,245.
