Black Women's Blueprint, Inc. is a civil and human rights organization of women and men. Our purpose is to take action to secure social, political and economic equality in American society now. We work to develop a culture where Women of African descent are fully empowered and where gender, race and other disparities are erased. We engage in progressive research, historical documentation, support movement building and organize on social justice issues steeped in the struggles of Black Women within their communities and within dominant culture.
Currently, we are immersed in our work with The Black Women's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It is the first of its kind to focus on Black Women in America and their experiences with sexual violence and it was launched by Black Feminists in the U.S. It is a bold, innovative and groundbreaking move by Black Women across generation, ethnicity, sexuality and other identities to confront the ever shifting nature of rape culture and sexual violence against African-American/Black women in the United-States.
One of the four main crucial components to this work ishealing and we are looking for a writer to create weekly blog pieces centered around healing, whether it be on an individual, inter-personal and/or community degree. We are looking for someone who is not only willing to speak truth but who also works actively to promote the blog and engage our readership in these important discussions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop weekly blog pieces surrounding the theme of healing related to violence against women, trauma, resistance work, violence at the personal/inter-personal/community areas, etc.
  • Engage our readers to discuss the themes written in the pieces as well as the work Black Women's Blueprint does via blogging and social media
  • Increase readership through promotion and social media outreach
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Working knowledge and obvious passion on issues related to violence against Women, rape culture, intersectionality, race-related issues
  • Experience working on healing in different areas: personal, inter-personal, professional, community
  • Strong and creative communication skills
  • Working knowledge of and experience with blog management
  • Ability to develop creative and innovative ways to engage audience through blogging and social media

Interested in empowering women and girls? We are! We're the Black Women's Blueprint and we believe ending sexual assault and ensuring their economic security are some of the most pressing issues of our time.
We're a non-profit movement building organization working with Black/African American communities and with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): to provide opportunities for people who want to address sexual assault through personal and collective action. We get the link between gender-violence and the urgent need to address poverty and promote new economies for women of color. We believe this is our stewardship moment.
One of our objecitves is to inspire people to care about what happens to women and girls in Black communities. At Black Women's Blueprint you can learn about the causes of violence, learn about its impact, and work collectively on great ideas and strategies to address it.
We're looking for talented people who share our passion for empowering marginalized communities, think broadly about ending oppression and believe this is the time to act. We currently have an opening for a Social Media and Marketing Internwith experience with writing or speaking out against gender-based violence or poverty to support the growth of our core initiatives.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Write newsletter and blog posts on Black/African-American women and girls, issues related to violence, poverty and movement building and community empowerment.
  • Develop and manage social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Work with staff to support digital media campaigns
  • Coordinate content development for bloggers reporting on the impact of gender-violence
  • Monitor the Feminist blogging community to find articles relevant to the Black Women's Blueprint mission and brand
  • Support Black Women's Blueprint project and product marketing in the context of an eCommerce platform to provide maximum product visibility and educational information
EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
  • Direct exposure to latest approaches in communicating about gender-violence issues
  • Direct experience with digital media campaigns
  • eCommerce platform use and development with a sustainability objective
  • Anti-Rape and Anti-Poverty messaging development

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
  • Experience using online platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumbler, Goolge+ and Youtube
  • A self-starter with the ability to perform self-directed research
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Some Digital Marketing campaign experience
  • Experience with sustainable product communication and eCommerce marketing models
Timing and Compensation:
  • This is a semester length, part-time internship starting in August/Sept 2014.

DESCRIPTION

Black Women's Blueprint, Inc. is looking for Interns specializing in History, Women's Studies, or African Studies to intern during the summer and/or fall to help with the organization's continuous Black HerStory Project.
The list of Research Projects is extensive. Interns main tasks include:
  • Visiting archives and libraries to collect information and documentation related to the several Research Projects being conducted by Black Women's Blueprint, Inc.
  • Assisting with development of exhibitions
  • Planning tours and events
  • Engaging community and recruiting membership
  • Classifying documentation findings
  • Conducting oral history interviews
  • Interviewing individuals who have not yet told their individual stories
  • Writing short essays to be published on Black Women's Blueprint's website
  • Writing reports on research findings
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Strong computer skills, including Word and Internet applications
  • Interest in the not-for-profit sector

DESCRIPTION
28hrs/week (4 days)
$30,000/year

Basic Function: To provide counseling services to individuals and families who have experienced sexual assault and other forms of sexual violence, domestic violence, and stalking in order to promote long-term healing from the effects of violence and abuse.
Specific Duties
  1. Conduct psychosocial assessments.
  2. Provide on-going counseling and support groups for those who have survived physical and/or sexual abuse.
  3. Lead effective coordination of resources with case management programs in order to ensure comprehensive services that maintain the respect and dignity of each survivor.
  4. Conduct outreach as needed.
  5. Maintain accurate and current records as required by the agency and its funding sources.
  6. Maintain cordial professional relationships with allied professionals. Provide information to agencies and organizations that serve survivors of violence or express interest in receiving information regarding this population.
  7. Complete in a timely fashion all necessary weekly and monthly records that pertain to services provided, time and attendance, travel and workshop reimbursement, continuing education--which is received or provided--and other records deemed appropriate by the organization.
General Qualifications
  • Appreciation of the agency's philosophical understanding regarding violence and oppression
  • Demonstrable commitment to your personal healing as key to working responsibly and effectively with others
  • Demonstrable commitment to developing trauma-focused counseling and advocacy skills
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some weekend and evening hours
  • Demonstrable commitment to creating and maintaining a work environment reflective of the agency's mission and philosophy regarding working relations
  • Demonstrable commitment to contributing to the operation and growth of the agency by taking on administrative/operational tasks and providing leadership as appropriate
  • Ability to balance autonomy, responsibility, and collaboration
  • Multi-cultural and multi-lingual a plus
  • Strong organizational skills and interest in maintaining a structured, warm, healing-conducive environment
Black Women's Blueprint aims to be an information and resource center regarding all aspects of sexual violence in communities of African descendants. It provides leadership, consultation, and technical assistance by generating and facilitating the development and flow of information on sexual violence intervention and prevention strategies that are culturally relevant, appropriate, and rooted in Black feminist/womanist, including anti-racist and intersectional analysis. Black Women's Blueprint works to address the causes and impact of sexual violence through collaboration, training, and education, prevention efforts, and the distribution of resources.
My Sisters Keeper and Black Women's Blueprint seek a candidate who shares our vision and philosophy, including core beliefs such as (1) sexual assault, domestic violence, and dating violence are direct violations of our human rights; (2) healing from the effects of those experiences is a life-long process; and (3) commitment to healing is a key to our well-being, effective relationships with others, healthy and equitable communities, and meaningful political change.
