DESCRIPTION

Feminist Women's Health Center (FWHC), located in Atlanta, Georgia, is seeking an Executive Director. Interested candidates should be prepared to demonstrate long-term success in leading a multi-faceted non-profit organization.

The mission of the FWHC is to provide accessible, comprehensive gynecological healthcare to all who need it without judgment. As innovative healthcare leaders, FWHC works collaboratively within the local community and nationally to promote reproductive health, rights, and justice. We advocate for wellness, uncensored health information and fair public policies by educating the larger community and empowering our clients to make their own decisions.

Reporting to the FWHC Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have a broad range of responsibilities and will work with an executive leadership team, a talented and independent staff, elected officials, medical personnel, enthusiastic volunteers, donors who have sustained the organization for 30 years, as well as partner agencies, both local and national. The Executive Director is expected to maintain an organization that respectfully meets the diverse needs of the various communities FWHC serves.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of ten years relevant experience, the ability to communicate effectively, a demonstrated commitment to reproductive justice, a Master's degree or equivalent, vision and steadiness. In addition, interested candidates should have a demonstrated ability to work efficiently, meet demanding deadlines and balance multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. The new Executive Director will be following an outstanding leader who has grown FWHC for the past 20 years.

BACKGROUND

Founded in 1992, the Center for Reproductive Rights is a non-profit organization that promotes women's equality worldwide by securing reproductive rights in constitutional and international human rights law. Its mission is straightforward and ambitious: to advance reproductive health and rights as a fundamental right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect and fulfill. The Center is unmatched as a reproductive rights organization in its expertise on U.S. constitutional law, comparative law, and international human rights law.

The Center works across the globe on issues including access to life-saving obstetrics care, contraception, abortion services, and comprehensive sexuality information, as well as the prevention of forced sterilization and FGM. It has brought groundbreaking cases before national courts, U.N. committees, and regional human rights bodies, and has built the legal capacity of women's rights advocates in over 50 countries. The Center is governed by a 20-person Board of Directors and employs more than 100 professionals from Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Kenya, Korea, Nepal, Nigeria, the Philippines, Slovakia, Sweden and the U.S.
In addition to a headquarters in New York City, the Center has offices in: Washington D.C.; Bogotá, Colombia; Kathmandu, Nepal; Nairobi, Kenya; and Geneva, Switzerland. Its annual budget of more than $15 million is raised primarily from foundations and individuals.

THE POSITION

The Center for Reproductive Rights seeks a dynamic, ambitious and data-driven Major Gifts Manager ("Manager") to be based in its New York City headquarters. The Manager will report to the Director of Individual Giving and join a development team of 10 individuals as a crucial part of an innovative and cutting-edge organization. The Center has launched an aggressive and exciting strategic plan to expand its impact worldwide over the next five years and is looking for an ambitious fundraising professional to take a leading role in the growth and success of the organization's development efforts.

• An impressive and engaged Board and strong leadership team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and manage a portfolio of 150-200 prospects capable of making gifts of at least $5,000. Emphasis will be on securing a significant number of new gifts and gift upgrades through a strategic and aggressive approach to personal cultivation and solicitation.
• Together with the Director of Individual Giving and the Center's direct mail consultants, develop multi-channel communications and other strategies for the Center's mid-level donors ($500-4,999), achieving aggressive targets for an increase in number of donors, annual gift upgrades, and overall donor engagement and developing the program as an effective pipeline to the major gifts program.
• Collaborate with the Development team on the successful planning and execution of the Center's annual gala and other special events, including soliciting corporate support for the event and providing practical support for the recruitment and management of the event host committee and honorees.
• Provide support to the Director of Individual Giving and the Director of Development in creating briefings, proposal materials, and other communications for major donors.
• Where appropriate, work with donor volunteers on local hosted events and special initiatives.
• Build relationships with the Center's legal staff, communications staff, and others to acquire the information needed to solicit gifts and build donor relationships effectively.
• Work as part of the overall development team to develop and execute strategies to achieve annual departmental goals as well as the goals of the Center's five-year strategic plan and fundraising campaign.
• Assist in team goal setting and expense management.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree required.
• 5-7 years' experience working in a strategic, front-line annual and/or major gifts fundraising position.
• A successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high net-worth individuals.
• Ability to nimbly navigate the demands of a data-driven direct response program while also providing support to a highly-personalized and thoughtful major gifts effort through excellent analytical, organizational and relationship skills.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate the mission, goals, and needs of an organization to donors, increasing donor loyalty and engagement.
• Principled, ethical and professional, and committed to exceptional work quality and standards.
• A collaborative style and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
• Highly organized, creative, pro-active, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize with superior time management and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to meet short deadlines and thrive within a fast-paced, professionally rigorous environment.
• Excellent verbal & written communication skills and demonstrated ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, accurately and concisely.
• Experience with volunteer management an advantage.
• Ability to travel required.
• Commitment to the Center's mission, purpose, and values. Experience need not be in reproductive rights specifically.

DESCRIPTION

Toward the end of the 20th century, the Guerrilla Girls, an anonymous collective of women artists who take the names of dead women artists and wear gorilla masks to shield their public identities, sought out new frontiers in their fight for truth, justice and the feminist way. Guerrilla Girls BroadBand, "the Broads," use their wit, website and interactive multi-media events to combat sexism, racism and social injustice, focusing attention on such taboo subjects as workplace discrimination, armed forces recruitment tactics in schools, and abortion access for young women.

MAP ABORTION: An interactive, online map with multiple layers of information including historical context and first-person accounts exploring the relationship between access to abortion and the political and social struggles around reproductive justice in the United States. The visual theme will evoke a user-activated game appealing especially to young women.

Meetings of the collective are held in a central location in Brooklyn, NY. Interns must be able to correspond regularly through email, ideally be web and social media-savvy, require minimal micro-managing and maintain a journal for research results. We will work with your school/department to develop academic credit requirements.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Ability to conduct online research;
  • Ability to understand state-by-state legislation;
  • Knowledge of reproductive justice issues;
  • Independent worker with a strong sense of humor;
  • Ability to collaborate in teams;
  • Knowledge of abortion access issues nationally ideal.
