A national non-profit organization founded in 1995, the Jewish Women's Archive is devoted to making known the stories, struggles, and achievements of Jewish women in North America in order to enrich the way we understand the past and ensure a more inclusive future. JWA has amassed the most extensive collection of material anywhere on American Jewish women, and has created an increasing demand for its information, resources and services. Its website, which draws more than 1.2 million unique visitors annually, is a destination for people seeking knowledge, a sense of connection and community, and a way to affirm and enhance the legacy of American Jewish women.

JWA has achieved unusually strong levels of support for a young organization. Its Board of Directors consists of women leaders in the fields of education and history as well as visionary philanthropists who have worked to actualize the dream of the founding director. The Board is currently focused on moving JWA into the next phase of organizational strategy and growth. A diverse staff of 10 FTE's work in a pleasant Brookline neighborhood with easy access to public transportation and affordable parking. Office atmosphere is lively, friendly, and collegial.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Jewish Women's Archive (JWA) seeks a dynamic individual to lead the creation, implementation, and evaluation of JWA's online and face-to-face education and outreach programs.The successful candidate will be a resourceful and entrepreneurial professional with excellent written and oral communication skills, who thrives in an organization that sets a premium on collaboration, strategic thinking, and innovation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing strategic direction for all programs;
  • Identifying opportunities for programmatic expansion and funding;
  • Increasing the reach and impact of JWA's programs, projects, and partnerships;
  • Planning and overseeing the marketing, implementation, and evaluation of new programs and partnerships.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Work collaboratively with education staff to create and implement programming and partnerships;
  • Partner with other educational and community organizations to support or develop jointly-sponsored programming;
  • Collaborate with communications staff to develop promotional materials designed to publicize educational programming;
  • Prepare grant narratives, budgets, and reports in concert with Director of Development and Chief Financial Officer;
  • Teach workshops, give presentations, and participate in programs as needed;
  • Represent JWA at relevant professional and community meetings and conferences;
  • Serve as the public face of JWA's Education Department.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a minimum of five years experience designing and delivering educational and/or other public programs in non-academic settings.
  • Be a consummate networker. S/he will be skilled at building relationships with potential organizational partners, thought leaders, and community members.
  • Demonstrate an ability to generate ideas for new programming, seek out opportunities, and excite others about JWA's mission.
  • Have a keen interest in history and possess a college or graduate-level degree in American, Jewish, and/or women's history.
  • Know about or be interested in the world of formal and informal Jewish education; having an established network in the field is a plus.
  • Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills and facility with traditional and digital media.
  • Enjoy working independently and as part of a team.
  • Understand and share JWA's commitment to utilize the newest communication and networking tools to inspire action and foster change.
This is a full-time position, with the possibility for a flexible schedule. Must be able to travel and to work occasional weekends and evenings.

The Mission of the Maasai Girls Education Fund is to improve the literacy, health, and economic
well-being of Maasai women in Kenya through education of girls and their communities.


DESCRIPTION


The Maasai Girls Education Fund (MGEF)—www.maasaigirlseducation.org—is a nonprofit
organization headquartered in Washington DC, working in partnership with a Community Based
Organization (CBO) in Kajiado, Kenya. MGEF was founded in 2000 by Barbara Shaw who was
first inspired to personally sponsor the education of one Maasai girl. As of January 2013, MGEF
has enabled 120 girls to attend school. In 2006, MGEF launched its Community Education
Program to address the cultural barriers to girls’ education, and more than 6,000 girls, boys,
women and men have participated.

MGEF started as a volunteer-based organization and hired its first employee in 2011. As
awareness of MGEF grows, so do opportunities to provide more scholarships and expand
the Community Education Program. Program growth will require an experienced Director of
Development & Programs (DDP) to assist in bringing the organization to the next level. The
ideal candidate would be interested in transitioning to the position of Executive Director as
funding becomes available to support such a position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising

•Work with the President and Board collaboratively to develop a strategic plan to include short-term (during the transition) and long-term goals for the organization, costs associated with the strategic plan, and strategies to meet these goals.
•Raise funds to meet the operational needs of the organization.
•Participate in all levels of fundraising through cultivation of new donors (individuals, foundations and corporations) and increasing support from existing donors.
•Establish and meet fundraising goals with monthly reporting of actual performance vs. goal to the Board.
•Increase the portfolio of donors that offer general operating support for MGEF.

General Management

•Gain familiarity with and significantly assist in managing day-to-day operations.
•Oversee and monitor the organization’s finances and coordinate this work, as appropriate, with the Board’s Audit Committee.
•Improve and oversee organizational procedures and systems with the Board.
•Serve as the point of contact for MGEF student sponsors.
•Support the public relations efforts as an enthusiastic ambassador and spokesperson.

Partnership with MGEF-Kajiado

•MGEF-Kajiado administers all of MGEF’s programs on the ground. This collaborative relationship with the Kajiado CBO is critical and requires almost daily communication between the two organizations. MGEF funds the Kajiado office, and works directly with the staff to design and execute projects and to develop budgets. Travel to Kenya two times per year, for a combined duration of at least 4 weeks, is required.
•Manage reimbursement of Kajiado office expenses (receipts must be provided).

IDEAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:
•A minimum of three to five years of fundraising experience.
•Commitment to fundraising with measurable success in identifying, cultivating and soliciting major donor gifts and generating other sources of revenue.
•A proven passion for, knowledge of and involvement with global women's issues.
•Demonstrated skills to envision and set strategic direction and create and implement short-term and long-term plans while working in a collaborative manner.
•Strong financial management, business and analytic skills combined with a record of success directing people in a small office environment with limited staff and resources.
•A solid understanding of new media, marketing techniques and the use of emerging technologies to effectively build new audiences.
•A track record as an effective communicator with the presence and credibility to serve as an enthusiastic spokesperson.

Starting salary for the Director of Development & Programs is $40,000 with the opportunity for growth. As noted above, the ideal candidate would be interested in transitioning to the position of Executive Director as funding becomes available.

Founded in 1990 and guided by the values of collaboration, depth and feminism, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) strives to help lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people live safer, healthier, and more empowered lives worldwide. IGLHRC focuses its efforts on supporting organizations to effectively document human rights violations and advocate for the rights of LGBT people. IGLHRC's vision of change includes policy reform, legal challenges, increased coalition work, and stronger LGBT communities worldwide. IGLHRC currently seeks a Director of Programs.
The Director of Programs helps IGLHRC to conceptualize, design and implement strategies to advance LGBT rights in policy and practice by enlisting possible allies, including: civil society, governments, international and regional human rights institutions, media, and the general public.
The Director of Programs is an energetic, seasoned professional with a proven track record in advocacy, capacity strengthening, and human rights documentation. Working closely with the Executive Director, program staff, senior staff and the Board, the Director of Programs will be based in New York City but should expect to travel extensively.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisory
  • Implement organizational strategic plan with its dual focus on training local LGBT community activists and organizations to document the realities of their lives and advocate for change.
  • Translate the strategic plan into the creation and implementation of work plans.
  • Support and manage 4 regional program coordinators internationally and other staff as needed.
  • Envision ambitious and evolving programmatic goals, in conjunction with IGLHRC staff and external partners, under supervision of Executive Director.
Advocacy
  • Lead work with UN treaty bodies, including supporting LGBT organizations to write and submit shadow reports, lobby during sessions, and implement treaty body work domestically.
  • Co-coordinate annual high-level LGBT rights side event at UN headquarters.
  • Lead IGLHRC's efforts to support UN resolutions that affirm LGBT and other human rights and block conservative initiatives.
  • Engage relevant UN stakeholders, including special mechanisms and UN agencies as well as state missions, to support LGBT rights.
  • Represent IGLHRC to relevant UN meetings, including the General Assembly, ECOSOC NGO Committee, Human Rights Council, and beyond.
  • Supervise the efforts of regional program staff to take the lead at regional human rights monitoring bodies.
  • Collaborate with like-minded NGOs.
Administrative
  • Liaise with Communications, Development and Operations to ensure programmatic vision is reflected in written output, fundraising, and hiring.
  • Function as part of senior management team under Executive Director.
  • Serve as a key organizational spokesperson, including to government officials, international agencies, media and the public.
  • Draft reports and proposals to funders.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A graduate degree in human rights, international relations, journalism, law, or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of direct experience working to influence policy on LGBT human rights or a related area of social or economic justice.
  • Knowledge and track record producing credible human rights documentation.
  • Knowledge and track record with training.
  • Capacity to plan and prioritize multiple, sometimes competing demands in fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to the on-going study of the political change, cultural norms and movement building.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively.
  • Commitment to the pursuit of liberation from persecution based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity or expression within the broader context of a desire to eliminate all intersecting forms of oppression.
  • Willingness to work in New York City and, if necessary, to apply for and qualify for a US Visa.
  • Demonstrated experience working regionally and/or internationally.
  • Senior level advocacy experience and knowledge of policymaking.
  • Ability to explain complex issues and positions to governmental and intergovernmental bodies as well as to media.
  • A track record with the media, including experience with media interviews and cultivating and maintaining relationships with key journalists.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (both writing and editing) in English.
  • Proficiency in another language is highly desired.
