Would you like to work with women, peace and security issues? Do you want to apply your textbook Human Rights law skills to the real world setting of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region? Do you want to interact with NGOs from MENA and contribute to their work for Peace, Women and Security? Do you want to experience the exciting – and sometimes chaotic – life of working in a civil society organisation with small budgets and big ambitions?
If you have answered YES to the questions above, then we want you to be our MENA Project intern for Spring 2015.
As a member of the dedicated WILPF team, your tasks will be exciting, diverse, and challenging. You will take part in the UN human rights bodies' sessions, you will liaise with our partners in the MENA region and learn from their work and you will report on all of that using your academic knowledge.
You will also prepare articles, working documents and other materials concerning women's rights, peace and security in the MENA region for our blog, newsletter and for internal use and will assist with the administration of our website. The intern will be responsible for updating our website.
We encourage you to apply if you are a committed activist interested on Women's rights and Peace issues. The internship is perfect for an energetic, motivated person who wants to discover the world of feminist organisations and activism.
DUTIES
  • Researching, collecting and analyzing information about particular conflict situations, with a focus on our 9 partner countries to inform advocacy campaigns.
  • Liaising with our national partners to implement the programme activities.
  • Following up with other international organisations and sections on shared activities.
  • Attending and reporting on several events in Geneva including the UN Human Rights Council sessions, treaty bodies and side events and provide logistical and administrative assistance to WILPF delegations to Geneva.
  • Monitoring and reporting on international news and political developments in the region.
  • Providing Translation and proofreading from English to Arabic and vice versa.
  • Managing the MENA Agenda website, facebook page and blog.
  • Providing assistance to MENA team members as needed.
  • Assisting with logistics and administration of the Geneva office and facilitate conmmunications with other teams in Geneva, New York, London and the region.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Pursuing a Masters Degree or a hold a Degree in International Relations, Gender studies, International Law, Human Rights or a related field
  • Human Rights activism or previous experience with the Civil Society
  • The candidate must be fluent in both English and Arabic. Working knowledge of French is a great advantage.
  • Knowledge of online social activism
  • Self-motivated and can demonstrate considerable initiative and be able to manage and complete many tasks simultaneously.
  • Mastered Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point and Excel)
  • Experience with Wordpress or other CMS (Content Management Systems)

AWID's Feminist Resource Mobilization program undertakes research, advocacy and capacity building to revolutionize approaches to funding, fundraising, resource mobilization for women's rights organizing. The program aims to ultimately strengthen women's rights organizations and their work, shift discourse between funders and activists, and increase the quality and quantity of resources available. The FRM program also seeks to give visibility to the tremendous impact of women's rights organizations and their transformative power through cutting-edge analysis and communications strategies.
The program focuses on political nuancing of resources through:
• research filling in the gaps in knowledge around resources, funding trends, and monitoring and evaluation and learning systems and frameworks;
• convening of funders and activists to change the way discussions on resources and impact take place and advance collective movement agendas;
• capacity building for donors and activists to increase and improve the funding for women's rights and gender equality as well as sharpen impact analysis and communication.
Overview of Position 
The FRM Program Coordinator is a full-time position responsible for the following:
• Contributes to the programmatic and research outputs of the initiative,
• Coordinates several specific projects within FRM work plan,
• Provides content, and logistical support for initiative activities, events and meetings,
• Actively participates in team- and organization- learning and development processes.
The Program Coordinator reports to the FRM Manager.
Work location of the position is open.
Responsibilities
Research Design and Implementation
• Works with the FRM Manager to identify and design research priorities for the program
• Coordinates preparations for each of the regional or population specific convening's including compiling research findings and content
• Develops and implements research plan related to FRM research priorities, including but not limited to:
• Survey development, dissemination and analysis
• Conducting literature reviews, identifying and analyzing key documents
• Identifying relevant stakeholders for interviews, designing, conducting and analyzing interviews
• Coordinates research team, including AWID staff and external consultants, and external stakeholder input (women's organizations and donor representatives), as appropriate
• Researches and creates briefing material to keep FRM team up to date on current issues and trends
Information and Communications
• In collaboration with Production and Events team, helps to prepare detailed production schedules—including timing of consultant contracts, draft reviews and comments, final editing and proofreading, translation, design, printing, and dissemination—for the initiative's information products
• Coordinates tracking monitoring and evaluation of projects within the program
• Receives messages sent to program e-mail and responds to queries or forwards to relevant staff for response, as appropriate
• Updates and maintains the program's database of contacts, compiles publication and information distribution lists
• Coordinates Feminist Resource Mobilization Hub on awid.org by:
o Sourcing and posting relevant information in relevant languages in accordance with established criteria and timeframes
o Preparing and/or editing FRM in-depth interviews, case studies or materials for web publication on RMH page
o Cross-posts website updates on social media for FRM program and AWID
Advocacy and Alliance-Building
• Liaises with research stakeholders (interviewees, case study authors, partner organizations, contractors/consultants, etc.)to provide feedback on research products, or follow-up on deadlines
• Liaises with key partners like INWF, FIMI, and regional women's funds and networks around ongoing and coming up collaborations
• Represents AWID in key international venues as needed
• Participates and inputs into AWID's analysis for the UN processes, such as Post 2015 etc requiring FRM analysis
Capacity-Building and Strategic Convening's
• Coordinates the logistics communications to internal and external stakeholders for meetings and other activities related to FRM
• Participates in regular coordination meetings with other teams within AWID and externally
• Participates in organizing FRM sessions at external convening's to showcase research and analysis produced by the program and/or strategize or confer/consult with key partners and allies
• Coordinates online and in person capacity building projects for movement building and feminist resource mobilization
• Contributes to project design and implementation for FRM program
Organizational Processes
• Follows program's monitoring & evaluation plan to track and record relevant evaluation data
• Participates and contributes to FRM team coordination and planning meetings
• Participates actively in organizational meeting venues (office and staff meetings) and committees
• Develops and monitors individual work plan that will document the timeline, requirements and deadlines to follow
• Maintains collaborative relationships with staff across AWID to facilitate contact and communication
• Ensures the timely and effective implementation of deliverables linked to individual work plans, including all activities, reports and evaluations
Qualifications
Experience:
• 4-6 years experience:
• working for a non-profit organization in a related role
• working with non-profit organizations based in the Global South and/or Central and Eastern Europe
• working in a multi-cultural team
• Conducting research, including collecting, analyzing, and presenting data and report-writing
• Preparing, writing and editing research for publication
• Advocacy initiatives or influence strategies

Academic Qualifications:
• University degree in Social Sciences
Expertise & Skills:
• Familiarity with basic characteristics of different funding sectors (bilateral or multilateral aid agencies, private foundations, international NGOs, and/or women's funds)
• Familiarity with elements of feminist theory and women's rights frameworks
• Excellent interpersonal understanding, relationship building and interpersonal skills to build strong alliances with diverse constituencies and manage complex politics, positioning and relationships

• Courses or certificates in Women's/Feminist Studies, Political Economy or Human Rights considered an asset
• Training or facilitation experience
• Preference for bilingual/trilingual applicants (English and Spanish and/or French)
• Knowledge of Arabic or Russian

DESCRIPTION

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the largest humanitarian agencies in the world, providing relief, rehabilitation and post-conflict reconstruction support to victims of oppression and violent conflict. IRC has worked for over seven decades and today is involved in over 25 areas affected by conflict. We address both the immediate, life saving needs of conflict-affected people in an emergency and the reconstruction needs in post-conflict societies.

The IRC aims to achieve a world in which women and girls pursue their potential, free from violence and inequality. We invest in research with women and girls to 1) better understand the realities, lives and priorities of the women and girls with whom we work, particularly in relation to violence and abuse; 2) inform more woman-centered and responsive program design; 3) evaluate program impact; and 4) influence approaches and interventions in the wider humanitarian and development sector.

SCOPE

This position provides technical support to research on women's empowerment and violence against women and girls in countries in conflict, crisis, post-conflict and post-crisis settings.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead the design and implementation of research in collaboration with technical advisors, field programs and research partners,
Present and publish research findings in academic journals and practitioner-focused outlets;
Contribute to or lead the development of concept notes and proposals for research projects.
Share the latest research on women's empowerment and violence against women and girls with technical units and field programs to support evidence-based programming
Proactively develop and manage partnerships with academics, consultants and other organizations that conduct related research
Represent research across the organization, serving as a key resource to IRC staff seeking information, including external relations and advocacy departments. Respond to field queries regarding research and evaluation and present findings in actionable terms.
Represent research and IRC in outside meetings and academic forums with donors, other non-governmental organizations, inter-agency working groups, foundations and other practitioners in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in public health or relevant field. Strong quantitative or qualitative training and expertise.
A minimum of 3 to 5 years of research experience is required, preferably within a humanitarian, international development setting.
Research related to women's empowerment or violence against women and girls.
Experience of research design in the context of violence and abuse, including a depth of understanding of the specific ethical and safety issues.
Demonstrated expertise in quantitative or qualitative methodology.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to research as a tool of social change.
Demonstrated understanding of feminist research theory and practice.
Proficiency in a non-English language is highly desirable, French or Arabic is preferred.
Up to 40% travel may be required.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

IRC is committed to a culture of bold leadership, innovation in all aspects of our work, creative partnerships and thorough accountability to those we serve. Since 1996, IRC has been implementing women’s protection and empowerment programs in refugee, internally displaced and other conflict-affected communities and has gained a reputation as a global leader in this field.

IRC is one of the only humanitarian organizations to maintain an independent Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) Technical Unit. This team of experts ensures that IRC’s programs adhere to the principles of best practice and promote the ongoing evolution of knowledge and practice in the prevention of and response to violence against women and girls. Together, the WPE Technical Unit supports 18 country programs working in partnership with communities and institutions to promote and protect women’s and girls’ human rights through gender equality and to meet the safety, health, psychosocial and justice needs of gender-based violence survivors.   In 2012 we started exploring opportunities to use this experience with IRC’s US programming specifically looking at how we can support refugees and asylees IRC resettles across the United States.

SCOPE OF WORK

The IRC WPE Technical Unit has grown significantly over the last few years and additional growth is expected over the next two years. Currently WPE has 23 staff, nine grants and a budget of over $4 million dollars annually. WPE currently receives direct funding from US and European government agencies and private donors. In addition WPE provides funding to or has oversight of grants in country programs and other IRC departments.

The Grants & Operations Sr. Manager is responsible for supporting the WPE Director and senior staff in ensuring effective and efficient grants and operations management within the unit.  This includes development and monitoring of Grant & Unit Budgets, Human Resources administration, Information & Knowledge systems and Procurement & Administrative support to WPE activities.  S/he will ensure that all the necessary IRC systems, policies and procedures are understood, and used by the WPE Technical Unit team members.   Where policies and procedures do not yet exist, the G&O Sr. Manager will be responsible for working with relevant departments and staff to develop them.

The Sr. Manager will supervise three support staff; currently the WPE Unit Assistant, WPE Budget Assistant, and the Assistant for Knowledge and Resource Support.  S/he reports to the WPE Director and liaises closely with the leadership team comprised of the WPE Director, and two Senior Technical Advisors.  S/he may be assigned to work with US Programs, regional and country staff on areas of budget and grants management.  S/he will also liaise closely with the IRC support departments to ensure that the WPE Technical Unit is operating as effectively and efficiently as possible to achieve the outcomes in the 2013 -2017 Strategic Plan.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS

Staff Management
  • Maintain and promote a positive work environment for direct reports including providing timely support, encouraging learning and skills development, providing effective feedback and holding regular staff meetings.
  • Ensure staff understand the roles and responsibilities of their position, have agreed performance objectives for each year and receive required training on IRC systems and processes to be effective
  • Monitor quality, activity timelines and due dates for deliverables to ensure staff meet internal and/or external requirements and deadlines
Systems & Processes
  • Act as unit focal point for the IRC standard systems, processes, and procedures applicable to WPE Unit including OTIS, TETRA, Rescue Net, Workday, Finance and Supply Chain
  • Proactively engage with WPE staff in NY or remotely and develop resources as required to ensure staff understand and utilize systems and are aware of any related changes. 
  • Identify areas of inefficiencies or gaps in current systems/policy/procedures and work with relevant IPD units and IRC operations departments to develop and implement improvements.
Grant Management
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of WPE grants, donor compliance and budget conditions and status
  • Working with the WPE Budget Assistant and IPD Finance staff ensure accuracy of grant financial/budget reports, promptly identify and advise the TU Director and applicable grant leads on areas of concern
  • In partnership with program technical staff contribute to the development of TU grant budget proposals including  inclusion of appropriate staff and operational costs
  • Ensure utilization of IRC standard grant management processes (OTIS, opening, review and closing meetings) and if required develop new tools or reporting formats to enhance grants management. 
  • Implement processes to ensure new, and current staff are fully orientated and trained on the IRC grants systems and processes and any changes.
WPE Annual Operating Budget & Finance
  • Ensure the WPE operating budget is maintained on a timely basis, revisions reviewed with the TU Director and submitted in accordance with the Finance schedule.
  • Analyze unit needs and spending patterns to ensure most effective use of funding and identification of any gaps or duplication in coverage. 
  • Promptly advice the TU Director and senior WPE staff of, and provide recommendations for, addressing any budget issues.
  • Ensure financial requirements and documentation related to WPE travel, conferences, advances and reimbursements are fully understood and complied with so that transactions are completed on a timely basis and correctly charged. Work with IPD and HQ finance staff to address any recurrent or systematic problems.
Operations & Administration
  • Monitor planning and progress on WPE procurement activities of goods and services (travel, conferences, equipment, consultants etc) and liaise with the related HQ Unit to resolve any delays or roadblocks
  • Oversee and coordinate HR administrative processes including onboarding, time-off requests, exit process, time and effort reporting and related TETRA processing for WPE staff.
  • Develop/maintain and implement effective onboarding processes, monitor implementation to ensure all staff receive timely and appropriate onboarding and required training
  • Support the Learning & Knowledge Assistant and technical staff in maintaining and developing accessible and relevant information
  • Work with IT to fully utilize existing information management and communication systems and if required identify options for more effective systems.
  • Actively engage in and promote a spirit of co-operation and team work within the unit and across departments. 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • College or university degree in related field; Business Administration, Management, Finance
  • 5+ years work experience including staff supervision, budget management, systems and procedure development.
  • Non-profit and grants management experience highly preferred
  • Self-directed, able to independently set priorities and solve problems with minimal guidance; comfortable working for a supervisor who is travelling 50% of the time
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to successfully work in a fast paced environment, within and across departments/functions and develop positive relationships with locally and remote based staff.
  • Aptitude for and interest in providing creative means of training and developing staff in organizational systems and procedures
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills and experience with organizational information and financial systems needed
  • Foreign language skills advantageous (French, Arabic)

DESCRIPTION

The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is an international non-profit organization specializing in the field of transitional justice. ICTJ works to help societies in transition address legacies of massive human rights violations and build civic trust in state institutions as protectors of human rights.
Provide technical assistance to civil society groups and policymakers to ensure that transitional justice measures seek to reveal patterns of abuse and build momentum for reform. The main functions are to devise strategies and guide and coordinate in-country work.

Position involves producing analysis, policy proposals, and critical feedback; conducting research to provide comparative information; assisting in the development of grant proposals; and providing technical and policy assistance to partners, civil society organizations, including women's and feminist groups, justice sector authorities, governments, and other policymakers. Incumbent will coordinate the program's work on matters related to criminal accountability in conjunction with the Criminal Justice Program. Incumbent will also be responsible for researching and writing on gender-related transitional justice issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program:
  • Monitor and analyze legal developments in the field of gender justice related to transitional justice.
  • Provide technical assistance on how transitional justice measures can effectively address sexual and gender-based violations and crimes.
  • Where there is particular added value, produce reports or briefing papers that help to develop significant thinking or technical advice on particular challenges.
  • Conceive, coordinate, and supervise or conduct research that deepens ICTJ's approach to gender justice issues related to transitional justice, with a view to ensuring practical solutions to identified problems.
  • Develop strategic resources and materials accessible to a range of audiences, including international and domestic justice systems, women's rights activists, and local/national women's movements.
  • Convene workshops, trainings, and other meetings to provide comparative knowledge and capacity building for relevant actors on gender issues in transitional justice contexts.
  • Assist director in advising and liaising with ICTJ's country and thematic programs, ensuring that a gendered approach to transitional justice is developed and "mainstreamed" within ICTJ's work.
  • Recruit and manage short-term consultants
  • Assist in ICTJ's fundraising efforts, including developing proposals and reporting on grants.
Outreach:
  • Duties involve a wide variety of complex, changing situations, requiring a high degree of conceptual ingenuity and initiative. Incumbent is required to have extensive and authoritative knowledge of the techniques, practices, and theories relevant to the position. Substantial international travel is to be expected.
  • Executes a program and oversees components performed by others within ICTJ or by outside consultants, agencies.
  • Develops and administers budgets for specific programs under her/his charge.
  • Regularly interacts with senior management staff to present and discuss work plans and priorities, and to report work status to ensure ICTJ achieves its organizational goals. Incumbent also has significant and important contact with funders, outside agencies, consultants, vendors, and other business-related outside parties, all of which have a major impact on the image, reputation, and operational well-being of ICTJ.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
A degree in law is required. A post-graduate degree in law is highly desirable.

Experience:
Seven years or more of relevant experience, with at least 3 years of experience in law at a national or international level. Experience working in partnership with civil society networks and with justice sector authorities. Demonstrated research or field experience in international human rights law and gender justice issues. Experience working at national and international levels, including experience with women's rights movements, particularly those in the Global South.

Related Skills or Knowledge:
A strong knowledge of transitional justice, international human rights law, feminist studies, and related fields. Ability to liaise effectively with civil society and victim organizations. Must be familiar with relevant legal issues, public policy, and international affairs and have a demonstrated commitment to the field. Project and program management experience is highly desirable, along with strong analytical and research skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required. Fluency in French or Arabic is desirable.
