DESCRIPTION


Hip Hop 4 Life is seeking engaging, organized, and creative educators interested in facilitating life skills, personal development, professional development, college readiness, and/or health awareness workshops to elementary, middle and high school youth. Hip Hop 4 Life's curriculum is designed to develop and enhance self-esteem, confidence, decision-making, conflict resolution skills, etiquette, goal-setting, healthy eating and exercise. Workshops range from 2-3 hours in length.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A strong passion for educating young people via creative methodology
- Bachelors degree required, Master's Degree preferred, in the areas of Education, Health or the Arts.
- A minimum of two (2) years of teaching and/or strong youth development experience, with elementary, middle and/or high school youth in a school day or after-school setting.
(NYC experience preferred)
- A current (no earlier than three years) background clearance verification with the NYC Department of Education.
- A flexible schedule and open availability to teach multiple workshops per week (some Saturdays) from September through June, and to attend weekly staff meetings. NOTE: Applicant must be available for hire by late August, and able to commit to the entire school year (September 1, 2013 – July 1, 2014)
- Experience in creating lesson plans and facilitating a variety of hands-on, interactive workshops, with the ability to follow a curriculum
- Ability to effectively recruit and retain student participants as needed throughout the school year.
Strong organization and administrative skills are a must. Applicants must be self-starters, highly detail-oriented, diligent, able to adapt easily to change, and able to work in a high-paced environment.
Accessible resources and/or expansive knowledge of free or low-cost activities for youth in the NYC area.
Multi-language skills and experience with teaching the Special Education population are a strong plus.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as positive, engaging and interactive role models for at-risk young men and young women.
Learn and facilitate the Hip Hop 4 Life program curricula.
Utilize your background (performing arts, visual arts, writing, athletics) to create adaptable lesson plans and special projects/activities for students. Each program club must complete multiple projects and a community service endeavor by the end of the school year.
Complete and submit Department of Education paperwork (attendance logs and reports, field logs and lesson plans) in entirety.
Identify and coordinate program-related, educational outings/field trips for young people
Complete and submit mid-year and final reports to be used by Hip Hop 4 Life and Department of Education Staff
Attend off site Department of Education meetings/trainings as needed.
Flexibility to travel within all 5 boroughs of New York City and immediate regions (i.e. Yonkers; New Jersey).

OVERVIEW

For 10 years, Urban Initiatives has run a health and education soccer program for second through fourth grade boys and girls in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) in underserved communities. Urban Initiatives is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit community development corporation that was established in 2003 through a grassroots effort by two CPS teachers, the school in which they worked, and the parents of their students in order to boost their physical fitness, health education, academic performance, and character development. Urban Initiatives believes in sports-based youth development and the importance of providing safe spaces for children to learn and grow. Urban Initiatives takes a whole child approach to development in order to provide children, who have the odds stacked against them, with the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Urban Initiatives is offering an AmeriCorps Member / Youth Program Associate for the 2013/2014 service term. Urban Initiatives is a Chicago based nonprofit organization that runs a health and education soccer program in 24 Chicago Public Schools and has grown tremendously over the years. The Program Associate will have the opportunity to work with the senior staff in a casual, collaborative working environment and will provide direct service through assistant coaching and parent outreach at four school sites in underserved Chicago communities. Full-time Hours: In season, typically M-Th; 7:30 AM-3:30 PM and F; 10:00 AM-6:00 PM. Out of season, typically M-F; 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. Members are required to work a minimum of 1700 hours or approximately 40 hours per week during the 10-month service term.

Stipend: The program will offer to the member a living stipend of $14,000, training and professional development opportunities. Upon the completion of the service term and the required 1700 worked hours; the member will become eligible for a $5,550 education award.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Program Associate dedicates his/her time to overseeing Work to Play Program quality. Additionally, the Youth Program Associate assists with implementation of the Take the Lead Program as well as Healthy Places activities at one partner school one day a week.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee Work to Play Program implementation at 5 school sites
  • Be the liaison between the schools and the UI office
  • Know all contents of the Work to Play Program Booklet including games, lessons, main points, health and character information, as well as administrative documents – also assist in ongoing program development by making suggestions for enhancements
  • Support programming by serving as Assistant Coach while at program sessions at each school every week
  • Oversee field trips, seasonal team parties and Service Learning Projects at each of your school sites
  • Other direct service includes assisting with program-related events, paperwork dissemination/collection, snack delivery, program evaluation, and other support
  • Take photos, videos, and record success stories to be posted on the UI blog or shared/written about in newsletters
  • Implement UI's parent outreach plan at all schools and track parent participation through activities such as parent meetings, parent letters, handouts, phone calls, invitations, field trips, etc.
  • Assist Program Manager with On-Site Program Director Evaluations
  • Participate in required staff meetings, staff development sessions and trainings
  • Identify and build relationships within the school communities of the schools served
  • Identify and reach out to potential program partners
  • Support one partner with more in-depth intervention through the Healthy Places Project
  • Support the Take the Lead Program by assisting with leadership retreats and facilitating monthly school-based meetings
  • Other responsibilities as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree (preferred)
  • Minimum of 18 year of age, US citizen or permanent resident status
  • Desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people, particularly those living in low-income distressed neighborhoods

Supervise assigned staff. Recruit, interview, hire, provide training, and development as appropriate, evaluate, counsel, provide conflict management and discipline as needed, and terminate if necessary. Provide regular one-on-one meetings with staff to ensure goal achievement and timely support to volunteers, conduct staff team meetings. Support staff retention and professional growth.
Actively collaborate with other departments. Engage in open-dialogue, continuous learning, and timely follow-up action.
Provide and ensure superior customer service is delivered through interactive and timely communication with internal and external customers, Girl Scout members and families, co-workers, and community members and contacts. One of the key measurements of successful Girl Scout customer service includes the timely placement of girls and volunteers into troops or other programs.
Create and manage the regional budget that supports the region's goals and work plans.
Direct, advise and coach staff in the managing of volunteer conflicts. Interceding to mediation, when required. Consult and update Vice President of Membership or others, as necessary.

Secondary

Assist Fund Development staff in the identification and cultivation of key volunteers, donors and corporations that strengthens community partnerships that are mission-aligned.
Place a high priority on building relationships within targeted communities, by becoming actively involved and knowledgeable of our diverse racial and ethnic communities. Support the development of cultural competency in staff.
In addition to the above, perform other duties as assigned.

District of Columbia

Research & Policy Intern

Research and Policy Interns gain hands-on experience working with Policy and Technical Assistance staff.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Researching  and analyzing state and local laws related to dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.
  • Contributing to the development of written products to assist schools and community-based organizations improve their response to young survivors of abuse.
  • Examining and categorizing relevant studies to support the work of the Training and Policy Departments.

Training & Library Intern

Training Library Interns work directly with the Training and Technical Assistance staff to develop a comprehensive, organized training resources library.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Collaborating with training department staff to design an effective and efficient training resources library.
  • Identifying, interpreting and organizing articles, studies, PowerPoint presentations and other resources that we use in our training programs.
  • Assisting in developing a bank of research-based statistics for use by Break the Cycle staff in presentations and trainings.
  • Assisting in interpreting relevant studies and developing bibliographies and resource lists to support the work of the training department.

Legal Intern

Legal Interns gain hands-on legal and public policy experience with a law-based, domestic violence organization.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Supporting Staff Attorneys in the delivery of free legal services to young victims of dating abuse, including client intake, safety planning, case preparation, court accompaniment and drafting legal documents.
  • Conducting legal, legislative and policy research with the aim to write on various domestic violence, family, criminal and general public interest law issues.
  • Assisting with the creation of advocacy and educational materials.
  • Responding to requests for help and maintaining our nationwide referral system.

Policy Intern

Policy Interns gain hands-on public policy experience working with Policy and Technical Assistance staff.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Conducting legislative and policy research.
  • Drafting legislative and administrative policies.
  • Creating advocacy and educational materials for policy-makers, service providers, schools and community members.
  • Participating in lobby visits with the DC City Council and the U.S. Congress. 

How to Get Started

This is an unpaid internship program. Undergraduate, graduate and law students, as well as recent graduates, are welcome to apply. Generally-speaking, we ask interns to commit a minimum of 10 weeks, 8-10 hours per week for part-time status and 20-40 hours a week for full-time status.

Programs Intern

  • Responding to requests for help, including maintaining our nationwide referral system.
  • Developing web content for loveisrespect.org.
  • Assisting with research projects, community outreach and other support as needed.

Social/Digital Media Intern

Social/Digital Media Interns help develop and manage Break the Cycle's extensive online/social/digital media presence in real time. Supporting the Director of Youth Programs and Digital Strategies Coordinator, Social/Digital Interns have the opportunity to directly impact a leading national nonprofit's efforts to engage young people in innovative and creative ways.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Managing and expanding Break the Cycle's social media presence.
  • Creating teen friendly web content, blogs and help resources.
  • Crafting digital media content for YouTube and online advertising.
  • Assisting communications staff with various PR projects.
  • Supporting other graphic design projects as needed (depending on experience).
  • Assisting staff in developing new marketing strategies to grow our audience and donor base.
Experience using Adobe Suite and Drupal web platforms is desired.

Development Intern: Donor Relations

Donor Relations Interns learn what it takes for a nonprofit organization to maintain sustaining support from individual donors as well as gain experience in promotion and fundraising for Break the Cycle.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Assisting with Break the Cycle events, including logistics, silent auction coordination and PR.
  • Individual donor research and outreach.
  • Assisting with other fundraising and community relation efforts including our volunteer program, press kits, data entry, social media outlets and other duties as needed.

Development Intern: Grants & Research

Development: Grants and Research Interns learn what it takes to fundraise, write grants and conduct research for a national nonprofit organization.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Researching foundation and corporation funding opportunities that fit with Break the Cycle’s mission and work to end dating abuse.
  • Filtering funding opportunities.
  • Working directly with the Foundation & Government Relations Specialist in developing and submitting grant applications.
  • Performing literal and statistical research on dating and domestic violence trends, prevalence rates and percentages.
  • Researching various forums for factual and statistical information.

Non-profit Management Intern

Management Interns participate in all facets of nonprofit management, working side-by-side with Break the Cycle's Executive Director.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Conducting research on organizational best practices and policies.
  • Preparing reports and communications for management team.

This is an unpaid internship program. Undergraduate, graduate and law students, as well as recent graduates, are welcome to apply. Generally-speaking, we ask interns to commit a minimum of 10 weeks, 8-10 hours per week for part-time status and 20-40 hours a week for full-time status.
