Editorial Internship, Women's eNews, New York, NY

Editorial Internship

Posted on: August 7, 2014
Posted by: Women's eNews

Our editoral interns are Women's eNews cub reporters, working in our office in downtown Manhattan, thrown in the thick of covering news in the media capital of the world. Editorial interns are responsible for reporting, writing and posting news updates throughout the day and compiling the weekly Cheers and Jeers. We also ask our interns to assist in some organizational tasks -- fact-checking, mass mailings and photocopying, for example -- but most interns have at least four stories published during their stint with Women's eNews.
Interns work closely with Women's eNews editors and benefit from one-to-one coaching on news writing and careful editing. The final product, a Women's eNews feature, is distributed to every major media outlet in the U.S. and to readers in more than 90 nations.
The internship is from September (or late August) through December, full time or part time. It is unpaid, but college credit can be provided.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong news writing skills, knowledge of AP stylebook, at least three years of college, interest in current events, familiarity with women's issues.
HOW TO APPLY
Send cover letter, resume and writing samples to: juhie@womensenews.org
Write "Internship" in the subject line.

Job location: Washington, DC
Employment type: Full-time

Who is AAUW?

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Our nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than 165,000 members and supporters across the United States, as well as 1,000 local branches and 800 college and university partners. Since AAUW's founding in 1881, our members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.

Our Art, Editorial, and Media Department oversees everything that AAUW produces, from program collateral and website updates to membership brochures and development appeals. Our staff is committed to our mission and to creating high-quality materials that portray the organization as the vibrant force it is.

Job Summary

AAUW is hiring a talented editorial assistant to join our busy Art, Editorial, and Media Department. You'll be in charge of making sure the trains run on time. We create hundreds of materials a year, and we need your organizational prowess and gentle nagging to keep everyone on track. You'll also have the opportunity to build your editorial skills and take on some projects of your own.

Essential Duties

As our editorial assistant, you will complement our existing departmental staff by maintaining our project management system as well as managing your own editorial projects, from press releases to blog posts to membership brochures. You'll work on everything from traditional publications projects such as newsletters, e-mails, and flyers, as well as some less-traditional items such as web graphics and social media campaigns.

Qualifications

  • 4-year degree in English, journalism, or communications

  • A genuine interest in the English language and an ability to develop a sophisticated understanding of grammar, style, and usage
  • A working knowledge of AP and Chicago style with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to house style
  • Excellent writing ability
  • Comfort managing sideways and up. You'll have to hold people at all levels of the organization to deadlines, and you should feel confident doing so.

Who We Are Looking For

We're looking for someone who loves to learn and to take initiative, who has big ideas, but who can also craft a plan and do the work to make those ideas happen.

We are committed to hiring the best editorial assistant in the area for this job, but we also want someone who is devoted to our mission. It's a demanding and fast-moving job, and you'll enjoy it more if you care about the cause.

How to Apply

Send your resume, cover letter, and the two pieces of writing you're most proud of to AAUW Human Resources at aauwjobs@aauw.org. Please indicate the position title in the subject line.

The Feminist Press is an independent, nonprofit publishing house based in Manhattan with a small, dedicated staff. We publish exciting authors who share an activist spirit and a belief in choice and equality, and seek out innovative, often surprising books that tell a different story.
Interns gain solid experience in all aspects of publishing and work closely with the staff in each department: editorial, publicity, marketing, and development.

  • assisting with fundraising events and book launch parties
  • general office management and mailing duties

We seek individuals willing to bring professionalism, dedication, strong multitasking and communication skills, a commitment to equality, and a good attitude to the office. Interns work closely with one another so a willingness to collaborate and share responsibilities is essential. Familiarity with our books is helpful, but is not required.
Former FP interns are now at Penguin, Simon & Schuster, Random House, W.W. Norton & Company, Signs: Journal of Women and Culture, Women Make Movies, On the Issues, the Nation, and the Huffington Post.
The Fall 2013 internship begins September 3 and runs until December 20 and requires a commitment of three days a week, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Interns will receive a small daily stipend to offset the cost of transportation within New York City.
Deadline to apply is June 1, 2013.
HOW TO APPLY
Email your resume and a cover letter explaining why you’d like to intern at the press tointern[at]feministpress[dot]org. In your email, please indicate which days of the week you are available. Include the names and contact information of two references.
