Program Support Officer Internship with CPAR in Addis Ababa

CPAR is a non-profit development organization working to address key determinants of health in the rural communities in Ethiopia, Malawi and Tanzania. CPAR supports initiatives to ensure access to clean and safe water, adequate and nutritious food, primary health care, secure livelihoods and a healthy environment.

Project Description

The internship will support CPAR’s Women-Led Community Food Security and Nutrition initiative. This initiative targets women farmers within their gender-balanced or all-women Farmer Field School groups for practical, hands-on discovery learning with the goal of improving agronomic practices and agricultural production.

This internship will aim to identify the training needs of project staff through a training needs assessment. The internship will also support review and revision of training modules and assist in the development of new training materials as needed.

Internship Description

Working under the supervision of the Country Program Manager, the Program Support Officer is primarily responsible for assisting with reporting, research and administrative duties related to grants, partnerships and collaborations. The Program Support Officer will:
  • Conduct research related to program development, contextual analysis and identifying potential sources of funding
  • Support country office with report writing and project monitoring including compiling and editing reports, and liaising with CPAR’s office in Canada
  • Assist in monitoring assigned programs in cooperation with field staff; build upon usage of best practices in program management, monitoring and evaluation; ensure that data captured supports the process of documenting/disseminating lessons learned and informs new program development
  • Assist in program development and identifying new potential sources of funding, perform grant management/administration tasks in support of program implementation
  • Contribute towards the implementation of public engagement programming in coordination with the Development and Programs Departments: including supporting social media platforms

Qualifications
  • University degree or equivalent in International Development or related discipline
  • Knowledge of African development issues
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
  • Experience in proposal development, report writing and researching
  • Experience with Results-Based Management (RBM) and Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Task-focused and organized: able to establish priorities in a time-sensitive environment, to meet deadlines with strong attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural effectiveness skills to work effectively in a collegial manner in collaborative contexts
  • Resourcefulness, flexibility, innovativeness, self-started and creativity are critical
  • Computer literacy: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Internet
  • Ability to work independently, strong time management and organizational skills
  • Experience living and working in a developing country
  • Experience managing social media platforms (blogs, Twitter, etc.)

Important Details

This unpaid internship position is funded by the Government of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) as part of the Youth Employment Strategy (YES).
Interested candidates must:
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada,
  • be between the ages of 19 and 30,
  • be a post-secondary graduate,
  • have not previously participated in a past internship within DFTAD’s IYIP initiative

Travel costs associated with the internship such as airfare to and from Canada, insurance, vaccinations, visa application, and in-country transit will be covered by the project. The intern will also receive a living allowance to cover accommodation, food and incidentals.

Interviews will take place in July 2015, and the pre-departure training program will begin in August 2015.

Overseas departures will be in August/September 2015 and all interns are required to return to Toronto for a Re-Entry Seminar in March 2016.

Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) offers educational programs to provide young women with an opportunity to analyze and explore leadership through rigorous coursework, experiential and skill based learning, and youth-designed activism projects. Every aspect of the program is designed to support and develop young women to both visualize themselves as leaders and actualize their leadership.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Dean Leadership Training Program is a skill-based internship opportunity to gain hands-on youth work and facilitation experience. Deans should demonstrate clear leadership experience, as well as, an interest in women's and girls' leadership, social justice, youth development, education, feminism, and non-profit work. The position offers a unique and exciting learning experience, which is fun, dynamic, and challenging. Eligible dean applicants must be young women who are either:
  • Recent college graduates (2014 graduates and non-masters candidates)
  • Current Juniors/Seniors at 4-year colleges
  • Graduates of 2-year colleges
  • 3-4 years out of high school
We are seeking applicants for 2 separate programs/sites:
  • Summer Institute - Newark, NJ & New York City, 6 weeks
  • Ready S.E.T. Go! - New York City, 4 weeks

Summer Institute (Newark, NJ & New York City)
The Summer Institute is a 6 week leadership and educational program for high school aged young women. Program participants take rigorous academic and creative classes, meet women representing a wide range of leadership, participate in workshops on relevant issues, and explore leadership and their identities. During the Summer Institute, Deans will work closely with young women for a total of 9 weeks (including an initial 3 week training period) and will receive a stipend of $2,800. This position is available in both Newark, New Jersey and New York City. Please note that we cannot guarantee site placement until the time of hire. However, if you are from the New Jersey and/or the Newark area, please make this clear on your application as we are seeking community representation in the Newark program. We are currently seeking Deans for this position to work from June 15th to August 14th 2015.
Ready S.E.T. Go! (Summer Empowerment Training) New York City
S.E.T. is a 4 week advanced and intensive leadership program for young women who have already completed the Summer Institute in New York City. S.E.T. offers a deeper focus on understanding social justice issues, hands-on leadership work, and practical leadership and life skills. The program is designed to help participants become stronger leaders and activists. During the S.E.T. program, Deans will work closely with high school (and some college) aged women (ages 14-22) for a total of 7 weeks (including the same initial 3 week training period) and will receive a stipend of $2,200. We are currently seeking Deans for this position to work from June 15th to July 31st 2015.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrate leadership and achievement in academic, professional, extracurricular or volunteer settings
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups in terms of ideologies, race, religion, class, sexual orientation, nationality, and ability
  • Creative, good humored, independent, flexible and mature
  • Interested in both the social activism as well as female youth development aspects of the program
  • Preferably have experience working with youth, especially young women (ages 14-22)
  • Comfortable with and excited about our mission and goals and are able to put them into practice
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a full-time position taking place Monday through Friday, approximately 40 hours per week (with varying hours depending on programmatic necessities).
Deans will:
  • Be assigned a mentee group of 8-10 young women
  • Serve as a teaching assistant in an assigned academic or creative course
  • Lead workshops and facilitate group discussions
  • Support both programmatic and administrative aspects of the organization

Mass. NOW is a multi-issue progressive feminist organization pushing for equality on multiple legislative fronts. During the upcoming session, Mass NOW will be supporting a number of bills and seeks a motivated, detail-oriented intern to help track legislation for the upcoming Massachusetts session. The intern would work closely with the Programs and Policy director, the VP of Legislation, and the legislative task force to push forward Mass NOW's legislative agenda. The Legislative Task Force Intern will work the VP of Legislation and will be responsible for monitoring activities and actions within the General Assembly during the session.
DUTIES
  • Track pending legislation in the current session, and record lead sponsors, co-sponsors, and votes on bills.
  • Keep track of dates for bill filing, amendment filing, and hearings.
  • Set up and maintain media alerts on Mass NOW's priority bills
  • Draft fact sheets on legislation
  • Collect stories from members and allies to support legislative efforts
  • Attend legislative hearings & legislator office visits
  • Update the VP of legislation and task force members about pending legislation

This internship position will provide someone with substantial experience in nonprofit development and management; events planning, researching donor prospects, solicitation strategizing, and gaining valuable office experience working in a non-profit.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Soliciting individual donors and sponsors for various events
  • Planning a full and varied silent auction for The Feminist Affair.
  • Managing incoming donations, appropriate thank you notes, and donation documentation
  • Provide administrative support in sending mailings and generating reports for board members.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Minimum 6-month advocacy, communications, and/or research internships available on a rolling basis.
Interns can work from our New York City office or remotely.
DESCRIPTION
The internship is 70% projects, 30% organizational and administrative responsibilities.
The intern will be required to:
  • Track policy deliberations on the United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs) on Women, Peace and Security; post-2015 development agenda; CEDAW; and other international laws and policies relevant to women and peacebuilding;
  • Conduct project based research;
  • Assist in preparatory phases of country-level programs;
  • Assist in preparations for the anniversary of UNSCR 1325 in October;
  • Assist in prepartions for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in February-March;
  • Communicate with network members and assist these with research; preparing funding applications etc.;
  • Track developments on global policies related to women, peace and security;
  • Prepare materials for and update specific sections of the website;
  • Actively engage on social media platforms where GNWP is active (twitter; facebook);
  • Basic office administration; and
  • Work in a supportive, inclusive atmosphere. All interns work as part of a multi-disciplinary team but are given substantial autonomy in the area that they have been assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Background/interest in public policy and advocacy, with a particular interest in moving global issues to national and community level; and amplifying the voices of grassroots women at the global level;
  • Knowledge of international policies (and discussions) that impact women, specifically UNSCRs 1325, 1820, 1888, 1889, 1960, 2106, 2122; the post-2015 development agenda; CEDAW;
  • Specialization in Latin America or Africa highly preferred;
  • Excellent information and communication skills, with attention to evolving strategies that bring issues on women, peace and security to the public forum;
  • Stellar writing and research abilities;
  • A self-starter with the ability to keep deadlines and commitments;
  • French and/or Spanish language skills highly preferred;
  • Graduate students preferred; and
  • A creative outlook, enthusiasm and a fresh perspective.

Program Interns work closely with the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice's Program Team to learn about and contribute to our support of over 130 grassroots LGBTQI groups around the world. Program Interns receive training and guidance on our progressive grantmaking model and learn about LGBTQI, feminist and social justice movements globally. Interns can expect to be involved in a variety of aspects of Astraea's grantmaking, capacity building and leadership development, and philanthropic advocacy programs, including:
  • Researching conditions experienced by LGBTQI communities in the U.S. and internationally;
  • Drafting grant summaries for review in grantmaking decisions;
  • Responding to inquiries from potential applicants;
  • Producing written and visual content about Astraea's programs and grantee partners;
  • Monitoring social media and identifying opportunities to amplify grantee partners' work;
  • Coordinating community briefings by visiting activists;
  • Assisting with grants processing and awards;
  • Translating key documents to facilitate outreach and communication with grantee partners; and,
  • Special projects as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ideal candidates for the Program Intern position have a deep commitment to Astraea's work and social justice values, strong writing and communications skills, and experience with LGBTQI, social justice or human rights work. Astraea particularly seeks interns with Spanish or other language proficiency, in addition to English.
TIME COMMITMENT/COMPENSATION
Interns are sought for the fall semester and, if possible, to continue through the spring. Arrangements can be made to work between 10 and 20 hours per week.
Internships, while unpaid, are structured as meaningful learning experiences. Limited transit stipend via metro cards is available and is awarded on a first come first serve basis. School credits are accepted.

Our editoral interns are Women's eNews cub reporters, working in our office in downtown Manhattan, thrown in the thick of covering news in the media capital of the world. Editorial interns are responsible for reporting, writing and posting news updates throughout the day and compiling the weekly Cheers and Jeers. We also ask our interns to assist in some organizational tasks -- fact-checking, mass mailings and photocopying, for example -- but most interns have at least four stories published during their stint with Women's eNews.
Interns work closely with Women's eNews editors and benefit from one-to-one coaching on news writing and careful editing. The final product, a Women's eNews feature, is distributed to every major media outlet in the U.S. and to readers in more than 90 nations.
The internship is from September (or late August) through December, full time or part time. It is unpaid, but college credit can be provided.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong news writing skills, knowledge of AP stylebook, at least three years of college, interest in current events, familiarity with women's issues.

Legislative Task Force Intern
Mass. NOW is a multi-issue progressive feminist organization pushing for equality on multiple legislative fronts. During the upcoming session, Mass NOW will be supporting a number of bills and seeks a motivated, detail-oriented intern to help track legislation for the upcoming 2014 Massachusetts session. The intern would work closely with the Programs and Policy director, the VP of Legislation, and the legislative task force to push forward Mass NOW's legislative agenda. The Legislative Task Force Intern will work the VP of Legislation and will be responsible for monitoring activities and actions within the General Assembly during its 2014 Session.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Track pending legislation in the current session, and record lead sponsors, co-sponsors, and votes on bills.
  • Keep track of dates for bill filing, amendment filing, and hearings.
  • Set up and maintain media alerts on Mass NOW's priority bills
  • Draft fact sheets on legislation
  • Collect stories from members and allies to support legislative efforts
  • Attend legislative hearings & legislator office visits
  • Update the VP of legislation and task force members about pending legislation
  • Prepare legislative outreach materials, including action alerts, advocate and legislator briefs
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong interest in legislative process and policy advocacy
  • Detail oriented
  • Experience in public policy and advocacy is a strong plus
  • Experience researching and tracking state and federal legislation
  • Strong organizational skills

CODEPINK's Los Angeles office is looking for interns! CODEPINK is a women-initiated social justice movement fighting to end global militarism and wage global peace. Our grassroots nonprofit group is committed to ending war (especially drone warfare), demanding accountability for the Iraq war, preventing war (on countries like Syria and Iran), and working for human rights for all (especially in Occupied Palestine and for prisoners in Guantanamo prison). We are also active supporters of other social justice issues--from environmental campaigns to money out of politics to supporting whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning and women's rights. As an intern, you will participate in local and national campaigns in collaboration with the fabulous CODEPINK staff. Both in and outside of the office, you will find yourself actively engaged in creative grassroots organizing and social outreach. Specific tasks may include: conducting research on critical sociopolitical issues; writing PINK TANK blog posts; creating posters, fliers, and gigantic banners; attending meetings, rallies, and demonstrations; participating in staff conference calls; as well as phone banking and data entry. Interested in empowering women and girls? We are! We're the Black Women's Blueprint and we believe ending sexual assault and ensuring their economic security are some of the most pressing issues of our time.
We're a non-profit movement building organization working with Black/African American communities and with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): to provide opportunities for people who want to address sexual assault through personal and collective action. We get the link between gender-violence and the urgent need to address poverty and promote new economies for women of color. We believe this is our stewardship moment.
One of our objecitves is to inspire people to care about what happens to women and girls in Black communities. At Black Women's Blueprint you can learn about the causes of violence, learn about its impact, and work collectively on great ideas and strategies to address it.
We're looking for talented people who share our passion for empowering marginalized communities, think broadly about ending oppression and believe this is the time to act. We currently have an opening for a Social Media and Marketing Internwith experience with writing or speaking out against gender-based violence or poverty to support the growth of our core initiatives.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Write newsletter and blog posts on Black/African-American women and girls, issues related to violence, poverty and movement building and community empowerment.
  • Develop and manage social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Work with staff to support digital media campaigns
  • Coordinate content development for bloggers reporting on the impact of gender-violence
  • Monitor the Feminist blogging community to find articles relevant to the Black Women's Blueprint mission and brand
  • Support Black Women's Blueprint project and product marketing in the context of an eCommerce platform to provide maximum product visibility and educational information
EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY

BENEFITS & COMPENSATION
All WMM internship positions are unpaid. However, interns qualify for and have access to a number of services and benefits:

The ideal candidate will be studying film production or cinema studies and have an interest in human rights/social justice. We are looking for interns to start in mid-late August and continue until winter break.
Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills; strong organizational skills; the ability to multi-task, work independently and work well under pressure; and will take initiative. Familiarity with Internet research, Windows XP and the Microsoft Office Suite necessary. Knowledge of and interest in feminist media a plus.
