MADRE seeks an experienced development professional with a strong track record of securing both private and public funds to oversee all aspects of its fundraising. This position works with both MADRE staff and board, reporting to the Executive Director (ED).
The Development Director is responsible with the ED for raising the organization's annual budget of $3 million. This is to be achieved through providing strategic leadership, work product and supervision to staff who report to the Development Director. The position entails supervising MADRE’s development team in all aspects of fundraising, including prospecting new donors, grant writing, reporting, and stewarding relationships with funders.
The ideal candidate has the ability to lead staff in fundraising strategies, including leveraging strong contacts with funding institutions, and be an integral part of a successful, growing organization. Importantly, the ideal candidate has the ability to work independently and take initiative while providing leadership, management and strategic direction to MADRE’s development staff. We are looking for someone with dedication, flexibility, energy and enthusiasm—a professional working closely with the ED to create and develop sustained relationships with a wide range of funders, and be a key driver in helping MADRE achieve its strategic growth goals. The candidate should have outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups, while demonstrating warmth, integrity and professionalism.
The Development Director is responsible for foundation, corporate and individual fundraising, working with the ED, who will orient and provide direction. Responsibilities include:
  • Secure financial support from, and develop strategic relationships with, institutional donors, including foundations and corporations, and begin efforts to tap investment capital;
  • Lead the stewardship of our long-term donors, and ensure they receive timely reports and new requests for funding;
  • In coordination with the ED, develop and coordinate a major individual donor program;
  • Develop and execute an overall organizational fundraising strategy, including benchmarks for progress and needed systems and tools to implement priorities;
  • Build and supervise a team of staff/consultants to achieve fundraising goals, including research, pipeline tracking, and execution of proposals, reports, and written communication;
  • Identify new funding opportunities and donor prospects; 
  • Oversee the development of high quality proposals that meet donor requirements;
  • Strengthen MADRE’s capacity to compete for funding calls in coordination with relevant stakeholders;
  • Work w/ ED and Bookkeeper to ensure that all proposal submissions include budgets that adequately cover costs;
  • Work closely with staff to develop and present ideas to potential donors;
  • Work closely with staff to ensure fundraising goals are aligned with program goals;
  • Analyze development data and reports on a quarterly basis to ensure our best efforts are invested in areas that yield high results; 
  • And, other duties as assigned by the ED.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum 8-10 years non-profit development experience;
  • Proven ability to raise an annual budget on par with MADRE’s and cultivate new donors; 
  • Experience working with both foundations and private donors strongly preferred; 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior writing skills and the ability to effectively manage a variety of relationships;
  • Proven supervision and management skills and ability to negotiate effectively with donors and partners;
  • Experience with strategic planning;
  • Strong critical thinking, research, and analytical skills;
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to juggle multiple tasks, set priorities, effectively manage time and meet deadlines, and proven ability to work under pressure; 
  • Strong knowledge of current trends in charitable giving; 
  • Expertise in the content of MADRE’s work and familiarity with the International Women’s Human Rights movement and its allies preferred.
