Who is Peace Action West?

Peace Action West is the region's largest peace and social justice lobby, working to abolish nuclear weapons, end international arms trafficking, and cut the military budget to allow investment in education, health care, and other community needs.

Job Summary

A development associate engages our major donors by personally presenting our work, our strategies, our stories and our history, with the purpose of strengthening their identification with and financial commitment to the organization and its cause. In addition, we seek to expand our support base and political clout through their networks and personal contacts.

The ideal candidate possesses strong interpersonal skills, a great passion to build momentum for the advancement of a foreign policy rooted in cooperation and human rights. The associate should have a deep commitment to acquiring knowledge on peace and justice issues (with particular attention relating to U.S. foreign policy), and an ability to inspire others.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Fundraising
  • Responsible for making formal and informal presentations to our major donors about the work of Peace Action.
  • Responsible for meeting a monthly fundraising & visit budget.
  • Responsible for the renewal and investment of assigned sponsors-with the goal of significantly increasing their commitment to Peace Action West.
  • Responsible for requesting and following up on leads from current development donors.
  • Responsible for assisting in existing or new development programs
  • Responsible for planning and executing house parties and other events.
Donor Relations
  • Responsible for timely dissemination of political, promotional and outreach materials to sponsors including letters, updates, action alerts, emails, holiday cards, and other materials.
Administrative Duties
  • Responsible for maintaining current giving and contact records on all donors.
  • Responsible for timely deposits, follow-up, and record keeping on all pledges, outstanding and fulfilled.
  • Responsible for ongoing coordination of Major Gifts work with field and phone outreach programs.
Training and Program Integration
  • Responsible for ongoing personal education relating to all current program work, the status of legislation, the ongoing reading and sharing of news items relevant to our issues and of interest to sponsors.
  • Must attend annual program, membership, staff advancement & cadre meetings.
  • Position includes periodic travel to other PAW offices for the purpose of training and fundraising.

Qualifications 

  • Proven phone and/or field outreach and fundraising skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and systems oriented.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Self-motivated and self-accountable.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Strong teamwork skills including the ability to solve work challenges in a relaxed and collegial manner.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings
  • Experience with Filemaker Pro, Excel, and Word helpful.
  • California driver's license required

General Summary

The mission of the Center is to develop programs and services that welcome the entire diversity of the LGBT community; unite our community across lines of religion, age, race, gender and economics; give visibility to the history and culture of all the diverse parts of our community; foster discussion and planning for our political and cultural future; and nurture new and start-up organizations to meet emerging community needs. Under the supervision of the Director of Programs, the Community Programs Coordinator is responsible for recruitment and training of volunteers, coordination of community programs, outreach and community engagement efforts, provision of information and referral services and special projects.

REPORTS TO: Director of Programs
STATUS: Regular/Non-Exempt/Full–Time

Description of Job Functions 

Information and Referral Program
  • Provide direct person to person, telephone and electronic communication to the public regarding the Center and community information and resources.
  • Supervise, schedule and evaluate volunteers and interns for the Center's information and referral desk, ensuring highest possible client service delivery. Provide staff back up for the information and referral desk as necessary.
  • Supervise volunteers on maintenance of Center bulletin boards and provision of collateral materials in public areas of the facility.
  • Assist in training on protocols and procedures with volunteers.
  • Oversee data entry and regular updates of the I&R database.
Volunteer Program
  • Recruit volunteers and provide initial training / orientation for new volunteers. Participate in planning and implementation of volunteer appreciation and professional development for volunteers.
  • Support basic volunteer coordination for Center programs and services, including recruitment, training and scheduling of volunteers for specific program activities.
  • Assist in the coordination of community programs and responses on current events and community issues including lectures, readings, town hall meetings, celebrations, marches and/or media responses and press conferences
  • Assist in the coordination of Center Pride month activities, including parade contingent, float and booth.
Cyber Center
  • Recruit, coordinate and schedule volunteers to staff the Cyber Center
  • Oversee Cyber Center cash handling and record keeping.
  • Provide conflict management and security assistance.
  • Work with Facilities staff and technical staff to keep Cyber Center equipment in operating condition.
Other Duties
  • Actively participate as a member of the Community Programs team including provision of back up for other program staff as needed.
  • Support special projects, including participating in long and short term program planning, implementation of program activities and initiatives and tracking of statistics and evaluation data.
  • Other duties assigned by Director of Programs
  • Work on evenings and week-end hours will be required. 
Qualifications & Experience
  • Commitment to the mission of the San Francisco LGBT Community Center. Experience and commitment to working in a multicultural environment.
  • Minimum one year experience working in community organizing, volunteer management and/or program coordination. Demonstrated ability to work with a broad cross-section of the LGBT community.
  • Strong familiarity with LGBT resources, including, but not limited to, health and wellness, housing, legal, employment and social activities.
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, de-escalation, and crisis management skills, ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent customer-service abilities.
  • Experience working collaboratively with multiple agencies desired.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively with supervisor or as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
  • Computer/PC literacy, including Internet proficiency, Microsoft Office Software, Google Docs, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Experience with Salesforce a plus.
  • Fluency in English is required. Bilingual or ASL skills highly desired.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. For over a decade, CAR has suffered from a multi-faceted crisis marked by chronic poverty, political instability, and violence. In December 2012, the Seleka rebel alliance took control over much of the country and, after a short period of attempted negotiations and peace talks, carried out a coup d'état in late March 2013. Since then, public services, governmental offices, police and military forces, schools, health provisions, and other services have come to a standstill. The planting season was heavily disrupted in a country with 80% of the population involved in agricultural work and protection issues are having a cross-cutting impact on all sectors. As a result, the chronic humanitarian needs facing CAR have become acute in many parts of the country requiring immediate and intensive humanitarian action to respond to the multi-sectoral needs at hand.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Governance Manager will be responsible for strengthening the capacity of community structures to improve transparency, accountability and participation in decision-making on community priorities in Kaga Bandoro. S/he will also oversee the IRC's work with communities and village committees, collaborating closely with other IRC programs working through partners. The Governance Manager will assure the quality of IRC's work with community members and village and local leadership and will work in tandem with other Program Managers to ensure the timely and effective on-the-ground implementation of the quick impact projects central to this project.
The position reports to the Area Program Coordinator Kaga Bandoro.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management
  • Implement all interventions related to the community mobilization and management, conflict resolution and civil society development aspects of the Governance program
  • Oversee election, training and support to community committees, ensuring representation of vulnerable and marginalized populations
  • Support work to improve leadership skills, including skills in mediation and conflict resolution of village and local authorities
  • Ensure the integration of a community-driven approach in all aspects of the program
  • Train and supervise a program team to actively monitor evolving concerns of the target communities, ensuring that community decision making takes these concerns into account.
  • Support the development team in designing trainings for community quick impact project committees, and working with these bodies to develop and implement work plans and spending plans.
  • Oversee relations with IRC finance for all sub-granting activities
Program Quality
  • Ensure that activities are implemented according to established protocols and tools that balance the need to meet deadlines and objectives with the importance of maintaining quality in processes and methodological rigor
  • Coordinate the methodological coherence of the program through the creation and update of training modules, field guides, guidelines and toolkits for the implementing teams
  • Manage project activity budget, liaising with key stakeholders to ensure that expenditures are planned, executed and managed properly. Work with the Governance and Rights Coordinator and Finance Controller to adjust the budget as necessary.
  • Develop a monitoring and evaluation plan ensuring that activity, output and effect data is captured in an accurate and efficient manner and those programs are continually tailored to optimize quality.
Coordination
  • Liaise regularly with the Grants Manager and APC to provide updates on the program, discuss emerging challenges, and collaborate on the design of new programs or changes to existing programs.
  • Work closely with other IRC Programs – and the Economic Recovery and Development program in particular – to explore areas of mutual interest ensure complementarity in activities.
HR Management
  • Working in collaboration with the APC develop and implement a plan to strengthen the capacity of national managers and assistants through trainings and delegation.
  • Write job descriptions; establish hiring criteria for project staff, interview and select staff as needed.
  • Actively manage performance of community mobilization and civil society development team staff, including setting yearly objectives for each staff member and providing them with informal semi-annual review and formal annual performance review based on these objectives.
  • Limit, identify, document and dismiss staff involved in fraud and corruption.
Reporting
  • Produce monthly reports and provide direct strategic advice to the Grants Manager, APC, and Country Director, so as to adjust the programmatic priorities and implementation modalities as necessary.
  • Support the development of new proposals and initiatives for the Governance and Rights programs, in accordance with the country strategic plan, IRC program framework, and accepted national and international standards.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Degree or equivalent experience in community mobilization, development and/or civil society development.
  • Minimum of 2 years progressively responsible experience in non-for profit work experience in community mobilization, development and/or civil society development, preferably in an international setting and/or in Africa.
  • Experience in strengthening the capacity of communities and local civil society, coordinating with local authorities
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French is essential
  • Monitoring and evaluation experience an advantage
  • Ability to work independently while being a strong team player.
  • Ability to work well under unstable security, administrative, and programmatic pressures.
  • Ability to manage a team with diverse backgrounds and to show flexibility
  • Advanced knowledge of usual desktop software such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Life Span is a community based, not for profit organization located in the Chicago metropolitan area which provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and their children.

Life Span is seeking a full time Children and Teen Counselor to provide individual and group services to boys who are grammar school, middle school and high school age. Mentoring high school boys is a major component of this job. Participants in services are children and teens who have witnessed abuse at home and/or who are involved in abusive relationships themselves.

Counseling services are provided in Life Span offices and in school based programs. Services include providing educational information about domestic violence and safety planning, developing non-violent conflict resolution skills, and promoting positive self-esteem building activities. The Children and Teen Counselor works with a team and must be a good communicator, flexible with scheduling, and able to represent the agency to community partners including school personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

B.A. in counseling psychology, social work or related field required; Master's preferred. Illinois IDVA mandated 40 hour Domestic Violence training desirable. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Candidates should also demonstrate a knowledge of and interest in domestic violence, women's issues, and issues affecting low income families. Car required.

POSITION OVERVIEW
