Lambda Legal seeks a staff attorney to engage in cutting-edge impact litigation, public policy advocacy, and education furthering Lambda Legal's mission. This position will be based in Lambda Legal's New York office. The attorney will devote approximately 50% of the position's time to the national work of the Transgender Rights Project and the other 50% to work in Lambda Legal's other priority areas in the Northeast region.
Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people with HIV through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in New York City, Lambda Legal has regional offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles.
Lambda Legal's law reform, policy, and education work encompasses a wide range of areas critically important to LGBT people and those living with HIV, including federal and state constitutional law issues; gender identity, sexual orientation and HIV discrimination in employment, schools, youth in out-of-home care systems, health care, identity documents, the criminal justice system; relationship protections, including the freedom to marry; child custody, visitation, assisted reproduction, and adoption; foster care and juvenile justice; asylum and immigration policy; and anti-LGBT harassment and violence. Lambda Legal's Transgender Rights Project works specifically on behalf of transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming people. Recent Lambda Legal landmark victories include Glenn v. Brumby, in which we established important law governing gender discrimination in the course of representing a transgender woman fired for transitioning at her job in the Georgia Assembly, and the Smith v. Fields case, which we won on behalf of several Wisconsin transgender women in prison who were denied transition-related health care. In other examples of our recent work, earlier this year the Transgender Rights Project secured Social Security survivor benefits for our 93-year-old client whose claim had been denied following her husband's death, as well as a Social Security Administration policy change for all transgender spouses.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Attorney will devote approximately 50% of the position's time to Lambda Legal's transgender advocacy nationwide and the other 50% to work in Lambda Legal's other priority areas in the Northeast Region (New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.), increasing Lambda Legal's presence as a force for civil rights there. The attorney will handle all aspects of litigation in precedent-setting cases, as well as engage in education efforts and policy advocacy. Litigation responsibilities include devising litigation strategies to produce the greatest positive impact most efficiently, conducting each stage of litigation in trial and appellate courts, writing amicus briefs, organizing amicus strategies, supervising Lambda Legal cooperating attorneys, assisting with the screening of requests for legal assistance, and investigating and developing potential new matters.
In addition, attorneys on staff often consult with private lawyers who are handling matters related to Lambda Legal's areas of expertise, advocate with government agencies and officials, and advise policy makers. The attorney will engage in public speaking, write for a variety of audiences, and help implement education strategies to advance public knowledge and change dialogue about sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and HIV-related legal issues. The education work involves frequent interviews with print, radio, television, and web reporters. Some travel is required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants are expected to possess experience sufficient to allow them to work with substantial independence in furtherance of Lambda Legal's mission in all areas of our work. Applicants should have a minimum of four (4) years experience as a practicing attorney, including litigation experience that prepares the applicant to handle law reform litigation.
The applicant should have a high level of independence and initiative, excellent speaking and writing skills, the ability to produce the highest caliber legal work, creativity, good judgment, and a willingness to work with others toward the most effective strategies and initiatives to advance civil rights. In addition, the successful candidate will have the ability to talk and write about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for non-lawyer audiences.
Working at Lambda Legal requires a demonstrated awareness of and commitment to the concerns of the communities Lambda Legal. Prior work on behalf of transgender people, the LGBT community and/or people living with HIV is highly desirable, as is fluency in Spanish and/or other languages in addition to English.

The New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is seeking a Lead Organizer. AVP envisions a world in which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), and HIV-affected people are safe, respected, and live free from violence. AVP's mission is to empower LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and support survivors through counseling and advocacy.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The New York City Anti-Violence Project is looking for an energetic and experienced individual to support the coordination of AVP's community organizing and public advocacy department. This person will supervise front line staff, develop community organizing campaigns, co-coordinate the Community Leadership Institute at AVP, oversee all outreach, and support in rapid incident response efforts. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to campaign development, supervision, training, facilitation, coalition coordination and outreach. Work may include night and weekend hours.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisory:
  • Supervise, support and evaluate Community Organizing and Public Advocacy (COPA) organizer and program associate.
  • Attend department meetings and other departmental staff engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with Co-Director of COPA to create, implement, and monitor departmental procedures and staff development plans.
Program Development and Coordination:
  • Work collaboratively with the Co-Director of COPA to:
    • follow and analyze policies and trends that impact AVP's public advocacy, community organizing, and client services programming.
    • create and maintain internal systems to increase the efficiency and impact of COPA's programs.
    • develop organizing strategies to respond to incidents of violence.
    • co-coordinate the Community Leadership Institute with COPA staff.
  • Work collaboratively with COPA and Client Services to co-coordinate the Speaker's Bureau
  • Create and supervise AVP's base building plans and goals.
  • Create volunteer leadership structures to further the work of AVP's campaigns.
  • Conduct campaign development research.
  • Develop and evaluate COPA organizing and advocacy campaigns with COPA staff.
  • Participate in movement building activities related to AVP's mission.
  • Attend community meetings, staff meetings, AVP events.
  • Develop and facilitate trainings including rapid incidence response, base building, leadership development, and campaign development.
  • Support staff to develop brochures, toolkits, and flyers on LGBTQ hate violence, sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and police violence.
Administrative:
  • Track grant deliverables and report on government and foundation activities as needed.
  • Attend professional development in-service trainings and external trainings/seminars as appropriate/indicated.
  • Attend regular staff and department meetings.
  • Attend AVP events.
Organizational Relationships
  • Reports to the Co-Director of Community Organizing and Public Advocacy
  • Works closely with staff in the Community Organizing and Public Advocacy Department, the Client Services Department, Legal Services Department and the Communications and Development Department.
Other Duties as Directed by Supervisors
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2 years of Community Organizing and Public Advocacy supervisory experience including: conducting performance evaluation, and promoting professional development for staff.
  • 4 years Community Organizing experience including campaign development, base building, leadership development, facilitation, training development, coalition coordination, and campaign based research.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a team of professionals with diverse experience and skill sets.
  • 2 years of project management or project coordination experience including reporting on government and foundation activities, program design and implementation, and program evaluation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of anti-oppression and social justice frameworks.
  • Excellent computer skills, database experience, and knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
  • Demonstrated professional experience with LGBTQ and HIV affected communities and LGBTQ and HIV-affected violence prevention.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working to end violence within and against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities.
Preferred Qualities and Skills:
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Quantitative and qualitative research experience.
  • Coalition coordination experience.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal legislative processes.
  • Experience with varied organizing and advocacy models.
  • Experience with rapid incident response organizing.

DESCRIPTION

This position will work within the Community Health Action Department to provide programmatic and administrative support for the Youth Center, targeting Young Latino Men who have Sex with Men (YLMSM) and Young Latino Transgender Women (YLTG) 18 – 29). Assist Program Manager in tailoring, adapting and co-facilitating small group-level intervention curriculum for the Latino population living with HIV and in developing and implementing communication strategies that increase traditional and new media covered of social marketing campaign. The Associate will administer oral HIV antibody tests and provide test results.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Two-year college or equivalent combination of education and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in facilitating support groups and coordination of small groups activities working in a Latino community and diverse populations. Ability to develop and maintain positive communication lines with La Clínica del Pueblo's various in-house programs and manage phone/face-to-face crisis situations. Good writing skills in Spanish English and strong communication skills. Experience with word processing, database and spreadsheet software programs.

Salary Range: $31,517 to $36,245.

DESCRIPTIONThe successful individual will be responsible for creating a comprehensive strategy to screen, recruit, retain and celebrate the contributions of approximately 600 volunteers. As a volunteer-driven organization, the VPS depends on the generous support of volunteers who contribute hundreds of thousands of hours annually to organize and manage one of the largest LGBTTQ celebrations in the world. The successful individual will also provide logistical support and participate in event planning where applicable.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Create a comprehensive strategy to screen, recruit, retain and celebrate the contributions of our volunteers.
• Expand VPS volunteer opportunities into year-round administrative support in the VPS office.

• Facilitate volunteer orientations and training workshops. 
• Coordinate with our Partnership Coordinator to solicit prizing for volunteer events and key volunteers.

The successful applicant(s) will engage seniors, community members and local queer and queer-friendly businesses to gather personal stories. The goal is to highlight the historic struggles and growing pains of a historically marginalized group, now in its 35th year of peaceful celebrations in Vancouver. This successful applicant(s) will also be responsible for developing an educational campaign to share these stories once they are collected and promoting them online and at events throughout the summer. This includes coordination with our corporate media partners to leverage free radio, television and print advertising to be developed in conjunction with our communications team.

• Coordinate with VPS Community Partners to build "community highlights" in the Official Pride Guide (60,000 circ)
• Coordinate with VPS media partners to promote and feature the stories in local media
• Manage all affairs in a manner consistent with the VPS Core Values, policies, and procedures
