PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Hate Violence Community Organizer is responsible for coordinating local responses to LGBTQ and HIV-related hate violence, conducting prevention and education outreach efforts and mobilizing community responses. This position is located within AVP's Community Organizing and Public Advocacy Department (COPA) and will report to the Co-Director of COPA.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Local Organizing
- Help organize and execute local cross-issue community-based responses to anti-LGTBQ and HIV-related violence incidents
- Represent AVP at community-based meetings, rallies, vigils, protests and other gatherings, including speaking on behalf of AVP
- Work collaboratively with other AVP staff, community based organizations and community leaders to formulate prevention strategies for anti-LGTBQ and HIV-related violence
- Work closely with AVP staff to ensure that community members' experiences, voices and priorities are integral to AVP's policy agenda and work
- Work collaboratively with the Co-Director of COPA to communicate and strategize with elected officials
- Work collaboratively with AVP staff in indentifying and creating state and local campaign initiatives
- Coordinate community-led committees to support state and local campaigns
- Represent AVP in local and statewide public advocacy coalitions and networks
- Work closely with the COPA Associate in recruiting volunteers
- Work with AVP staff to develop and publicize volunteer opportunities
- Coordinate, organize, train and supervise volunteer placement and activities
- Identify mission-appropriate outreach activities both reactively and proactively
- Support the coordination AVP's participation in Pride activities in all five boroughs
- Maintain and assist with development of outreach material
- With supervision, conduct trainings on LGBTQH-related violence
- Train and coordinate AVP's client-centered Speaker's Bureau
- Identify, track, evaluate, and present outreach-related trends
- Track all volunteers through the volunteer database
- Complete all paperwork in a timely manner
- Three years directly related experience in the community organizing field required.
- One year experience conducting outreach and a working knowledge of state, local and national hate violence policy advocacy strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to working to end violence within and against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
- Ability to work well in a team and independently.
- Willingness to commute throughout the five boroughs.
- Flexibility with work schedule.
