Gender Advisor, Save the Children, Toronto, Canada

Gender Advisor

Reporting to the Director of Programs, within the Programing department, this position will support several ongoing and recently approved projects, which may include projects focused on child, early and forced marriage in Somalia; maternal, newborn and child health in Afghanistan; and youth livelihoods in Ethiopia.

Reporting to the Director of Programs, within the Programing department, this position will support several ongoing and recently approved projects, which may include projects focused on child, early and forced marriage in Somalia; maternal, newborn and child health in Afghanistan; and youth livelihoods in Ethiopia. Responsibilities for any new projects will include ensuring gender mainstreaming throughout the project baselines and results based management frameworks, developing and supporting gender strategies, and facilitating gender capacity building for field teams via training and/or tool development. Ongoing responsibilities will include technical support, both remotely and via travel to work with field teams across thematic and regional contexts. Additionally, the post-holder will support the lead Technical Advisor on Gender as required, with duties including but not limited to supporting the design of new programs as well as the ongoing development of gender tools, research, and trainings.
Accountabilities
  • Provide quality technical support to the Toronto Head Office (HO) and Country Office (CO) staff and partners, including in Pakistan, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Mali, with a particular focus on the development, implementation and evaluation of gender sensitive and transformative activities to strengthen quality results and shared learning.
  • Develop and sustain gender-sensitive monitoring and evaluation (M&E), analysis, and learning systems and practices to capture and report on project gender deliverables, working in close collaboration with M&E teams.
  • Identify technical assistance needs re: gender of HO and CO staff and develop/adapt training resources as appropriate; deliver gender training and technical assistance to CO and project partners in such areas as gender and child rights, mainstreaming gender in the program cycle, and/or gender and specific technical areas including (i.e.) gender based violence, child marriage, education and/or health. Capacity building support may be delivered remotely or via travel to field offices.
  • Design/adapt gender tools for the CO and project partners to fulfil all project requirements.
  • Provide timely, complete and quality project narrative and financial reports and other required documentation, which integrates strong gender analysis, in compliance with Save the Children Canada and donor policies/regulations.
  • Liaise with DFATD officers, other donors, program staff of other agencies and members of the Save the Children International as appropriate
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in gender studies, international development or other related field with emphasis on gender
  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience in international development programming, with a focus on gender; at least 2 years of field experience
  • Experience developing practical tools and trainings, as well as facilitating learning of these resources
  • Knowledge and understanding of gender sensitive qualitative and quantitative research/evaluation methodologies and strong analytical skills
  • Knowledge and practical experience of working with DFATD’s Gender Equality Policy and results based management systems

  • Knowledge of rights based approach to programming and child rights
  • Knowledge and ability to work effectively across contexts of cultural and linguistic diversity
  • Superior language skills (oral, written, and comprehension) – exceptional English proficiency required, with other languages considered an asset
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with MS Office
  • Valid passport and ability to travel up to 30% of time, as needed
  • Good familiarity, networking and working relationships with donors
  • Previous experience with child rights programming will be an advantage
Other Requirements
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to Save the Children’s Mission, Vision and Values. Previous experience with child rights programming is an asset.
  • Adhere to Child Safeguarding policies & procedures – vulnerable sector police check required
  • Subject to police background check : vulnerable sector screening
  • Valid passport and ability to travel to national and international locations on occasional basis
