The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) is a nationally recognized, dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to providing immediate, effective and comprehensive employment services to men and women with recent criminal convictions. Having made more than 12,000 full-time, unsubsidized job-placements in the last 12 years in New York City, CEO began establishing offices in Upstate New York - Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo and Rochester; Tulsa, Oklahoma - that will provide life skills, paid transitional work and full-time work opportunities for people returning from state prison to those areas.

Having been proven to reduce recidivism through a random assignment evaluation, CEO has been expanding into several jurisdictions in California. CEO's first expansion site, Oakland, was launched in August 2011 as a pilot project called Golden State Works (GSW). This pilot project is operated through a partnership between CEO and Volunteers of America Bay Area (VOA) and has implemented all aspects of the CEO model in Oakland. Of note, CEO's growth in California will be assisted by the San Francisco-based non-profit REDF, an organization committed to scaling social enterprises (www.redf.org).

CEO is currently looking for a Employment Specialist (ES) who will assist participants in finding employment in the private sector. Leveraging the work experience participants gain on the CEO work crews, the Employment Specialist will identify/create job opportunities for participants and match qualified participants with these employment opportunities. He/She will be responsible for developing relationships with employers, successfully placing participants into these jobs and providing on-going support to both the employer and the participant.

This position will report to the Participant Services Manager. This position requires someone that can work flexible hours, has experience in sales, marketing and, preferably workforce development though private sector sales experience will be given preference. The ideal candidate will not only be able to work with participants, but will also be able to work with private sector employers in the Bay Area.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop relationships with local employers that are willing to hire CEO participants; build network of employers to ensure long term success
  • Make job placements and provide post-placement support to clients and employers
  • Meet monthly placement goals
  • Consistently and accurately document, in real time, all participant and employer contact, activities and outcomes into a computerized case management system
  • Participate in employer recruitment events, job fairs and networking events
  • Conduct targeted job search campaigns to place clients
  • Participate as a member of a service team by attending case conferencing meetings, liaison with Parole and/or Probation, attend community meetings and training sessions
  • Maintain contact with participants, monitor progress, report and refer to team member as necessary; evaluate participant's job start readiness
OTHER KEY TASKS
  • Monitor clients' attendance and program participation in order to provide encouragement of corrective measures when needed
  • Consistently and accurately document all participant and employer contact into a computerized case management system
  • Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • The Successful applicant will have a Bachelor's degree and experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) Sales/marketing (2) Employment Services (3) Case Manager in social services field

The Family Violence Law Center (FVLC) is working to end domestic violence in Alameda County. Our holistic approach integrates violence prevention with comprehensive intervention services. We also work to address and change barriers for survivors within the legal, health, education, and criminal justice systems. As one of California's oldest agencies serving abuse victims, FVLC is recognized as a leader for delivering exceptional services and advocating for long-term social change regarding violence. Since 1996, FVLC's Youth Program has educated middle and high school students on dating violence prevention throughout Alameda County. The Youth Program has also recruited, trained and developed high school students to become peer educators for younger students.

OVERVIEW

The Youth Organizer will be responsible for identifying and training youth leaders to be educators and organizers working to increase understanding and take action against dating violence in the context of community violence. This person will reach out to networks of individuals and organizations to ensure Oakland youth have opportunities to be change agents in their communities in order to end violence. The Youth Organizer should be firmly grounded in social justice theory - specifically, popular education - have strong community organizing experience, and must be excited at the prospect of growing with our organization as we move to increase community engagement. The primary goal of the Youth Organizer will be to support Oakland youth and community members to make the connection between community violence and teen dating/domestic violence.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

Youth Organizing
 Identify, outreach to, and connect with youth within various Oakland communities.
 Train youth to be peer leaders and support initiatives that both end violence and support positive community-level change.
 Partner with youth leaders to design and implement campaigns to change school policies concerning teen dating violence.
 Coordinate meetings, events, and activities for youth and allies.
 Work with youth to develop and deliver culturally relevant youth education, dialogue and organizing.
 Provide technical assistance around youth leadership development and teen dating violence prevention to external community partners.
Program Management
 Work with the project Curriculum Consultant and the Youth Program Manager to create and implement youth leadership development activities.
 Work with the Youth Program Manager to ensure services provided have the desired impact on participants.
 Work with the project Evaluation Consultant and the Youth Program Manager to determine the best data-tracking methods and then use these methods to track participants and progress towards achieving identified goals/benchmarks.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Experience with youth and/or community organizing and engagement.
 Familiarity with Oakland strengths and challenges, its neighborhoods, and institutions.
 Excellent group and individual communication skills (written and verbal). Ability to apply these skills across a range of relationships and environments, including with youth, colleagues, and external partners.
 Belief in youth capacity for leadership. Knowledge of youth development models and experience supporting the leadership development of youth.
 Desire for and comfort with young people taking the lead. The Youth Organizer must be able to motivate youth and support their self-determination while also creating and enforcing systems of accountability.

DESCRIPTION

Workers under the supervision of an attorney will engage in all or some of the following activities.
(a) Conducting Investigations. Gathering information though field inquiry and other research related to actual or potential cases and litigation.
(b) Lay Advocacy. (Paralegal Activity) representing client's interests with the Welfare department, other government agencies and other forums appropriate to a no-lawyer and engage in lay advocacy to the extent permissible under the law and the code of professional ethics; perform ministerial duties in connection with lawsuits such as filing and the service of process; and interpreting for non-English speaking clients in interview situations and before formal and informal tribunals.
(c) Community Education and Community Services. Maintaining CRLA liaison with community organizations and minority groups, to ensure that CRLA resources address client community needs and training the poor in lay advocacy and self-help efforts to overcome the effects of poverty, as done by welfare rights organizations, tenants rights, consumer protection agencies, co-ops and similar groups; and educating clients regarding legal rights.
(d) Client Intake. Perform initial screening for client eligibility; interview clients and prepare simple documents from standard forms; assist In Pro-Per clients in identifying useful information for presentation of their cases; provide appropriate advocacy and make referrals where appropriate.
(e) Perform other tasks assigned by his/her Directing Attorney that do not conflict with other provisions of this contract.
(f) Out of Office Assignments. Community Workers can be assigned to work in a region covered by a CRLA office other than their own upon mutual agreement of the LSWRC Member, their Directing Attorney, and the Directing Attorney of the other office involved.
(g) The duties of LSWRC Members may require their presence from time to time outside the office of their normal assignment.
(h) Conflicting Assignments. A Community Worker who is given conflicting assignments has both the right and obligation to discuss the matter with those giving the assignments as well as with his/her Directing Attorney for the purpose of resolving the conflict.
  1. Qualification. Applicant for a position of a CRLA Community Worker must have the ability to perform all of the above duties; consistent with the needs of the office.

SALARY: $24,232 - $47,000 depending upon experience credits calculated according to the requirements of the collective bargaining agreement between LSWRC and CRLA.

California Rural Legal Assistance needs an exceptionally dedicated full time regular Directing Attorney to manage the Santa Maria office. It is an ideal job for an experienced managing attorney who wants to join an effective, dynamic team working to make systemic change.

Reporting to the Executive Director and the Deputy Director, the CRLA Directing Attorney is responsible for the overall provision of legal services to the low income client community in the service area and the day to day operations of the local field office. This includes supervising, training and motivating local office staff to provide the highest quality legal services in accordance with CRLA program guidelines, the ABA Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services and the Code of Professional Responsibility.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Maintain an active caseload which consists of state and federal trial and appellate work.
- Supervise the activities of the CRLA local office staff attorneys, community workers and support staff in providing legal service to low income clients and client groups including advice, negotiation, litigation and administrative advocacy in accordance with CRLA priorities and case handling policies.
- Ensure that staff in the local office has accurate, timely, and complete information about the legal issues within the local office's scope of responsibility, including training in their basic office responsibilities.
- Evaluate staff on an annual basis including the identification of training needs to be incorporated into the office's six month work plan.
- Cooperate with the local office Director of Litigation, Advocacy and Training in the creation and implementation of the six month work plan.
- Encourage advocate staff to develop specialized knowledge in a substantive area of poverty law and to act as a resource for other staff through participation in at least one CRLA task force.
- Conduct weekly case review meetings to ensure that legal services provided are consistent with CRLA priorities, policies and procedures, and that they maximize office resources to provide the highest quality client service.
- Ensure that legal services provided are in compliance with LSC regulations, IOLTA requirements and the requirements of other grants to CRLA and the local office.
- Supervise staff in setting up local community education opportunities relating to legal rights and supervise the preparation of materials for these presentations.
- Act as liaison with the local community advisory board including setting up meetings, sending reports to the CRLA Board of Directors and working with the local board to identify annual office priorities.
- Cooperate with the Human Resources Department to ensure that all hires are completed in accordance with CRLA policies and procedures.
- Counsel and coach staff in performance, enlisting Human Resources as needed in cases where discipline is required.
- Cooperate with the Accounting Department in enforcing fiscally sound office procedures and ensuring a clean annual audit.

REQUIREMENTS

- Admitted to practice law before the court of any state.
- Admitted to practice law in the State of California or willingness to take the next California Bar Exam.
- Three years minimum experience managing law office and staff, preferably in a non-profit legal services environment.
- Three years minimum litigation experience, preferably in a non-profit legal services environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with low income clients.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Ability to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
- Good people skills and the ability to maintain positive relations with a diverse population.

SALARY: $42,000 - $67,500 based upon bar admission date, plus management bonus.

Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children consists of three shelters. Languille Emergency Shelter is a 12 week emergency shelter for women just off the streets. They provide food, clothing, shelter, referrals and supportive services for up to 30 woman a night, Hawks Residence Transitional Housing supports up to 30 women transitioning from emergency shelter to permanent housing and Farley House is a 21 one-bedroom apartment building providing transitional housing to single women and women with children. Good Shepherd Center is seeking a dependable, caring individual to work on-call and temporary full-time who has experience working with the homeless population.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides first line of staff presence in residential shelter, implements rules and policies governing shelter operations and assists residents with problems and questions. Answers phones and monitors front door. Ensures shelter residents comply with rules. Observes and records significant activities. Provides general information and direction to the public. Oversees volunteer activities.

Completion of high school or the equivalent. Six to twelve months of related experience.

POSITION
Summary Description
This position provides support to two projects related to LGBT youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems: 75% time will be spent on a policy project aimed at reducing the number of LGBT youth in out-of-home placement, and 25% time will be spent collecting and analyzing survey and interview data on LGBT youth in the juvenile justice system.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
This individual will be responsible for the following tasks.
  • Co-facilitating collaborative meetings.
  • Developing relationships and collaborating with other organizations completing similar work.
  • Developing anti-discrimination policies, data collection protocols, and data sharing agreements.
  • Managing the collection and coding of interview and quantitative data.
  • Collecting interview data from LGBT youth in the juvenile justice system.
  • Participating in discussions about quantitative data analysis.
  • Summarizing library and Internet research and writing literature reviews.
  • Drafting blog entries and leveraging social media to improve NCCD's visibility.
  • Completing proposals, reports, conference papers, and journal articles.
  • Attending meetings with staff, our partner organizations, and policy makers.
  • Organizing staff outreach events and making educational presentations.
  • Representing NCCD at local events and forums.
Problem Solving/Critical Thinking
High level of critical/analytical/interpretive thinking and problem solving required.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements
The ideal candidate will have an avid interest in research and policy and will have post-graduate coursework or a graduate degree in human development, education, sociology, law, legal studies, psychology, social work, ethnic studies, feminist studies, public health, public policy, or another related field. Minimum one to two years' experience. Must be detail-oriented, organized, and enthusiastic.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in the involvement of LGBT youth in multiple social service agencies. The majority of LGBT youth are also youth of color. Therefore, the ideal candidate will demonstrate cultural competency within the LGBT, Latino, Native American, First Nations, and/or African American communities.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Use of web-meeting technologies not required, but a plus.
Work schedule: Full-time position at 35 hours per week

A Public Relations Intern with A Room of Her Own Foundation (AROHO) has the opportunity to work directly with CEOs of two prestigious nonprofits. Working in the office of the Red Hen Press, a national presence in independent publishing based in Pasadena, and reporting to the Founder/ President of AROHO, the preeminent nonprofit working on behalf of creative women, you will have the opportunity to acquire skills in the growing non-profit arts sector and the potential of a salaried position.

We are currently accepting applications for the internship with a flexible start date. Our internship positions generally last about 6 months (this is flexible). POSITION
Women's Action to Gain Economic Security (WAGES) seeks a Cooperative Developer to work with worker-owned cooperatives that are in their first years of development or that request assistance as they face a new challenge. 

The Cooperative Developer will:

● facilitate organizational and leadership development in worker cooperatives

● serve as an interim general manager when needed at newer cooperatives that are in incubation

These two roles can at times be in conflict. The Cooperative Developer must exercise judgment to navigate the complexity of filling both of these functions simultaneously, and be able to move seamlessly from one to the other as a cooperative's needs change. For example, an effective co-op developer serving as an interim general manager will seek to provide structure and guidance but will also gradually work themselves out of the manager role as a cooperative develops its own capacities to address its management needs. 

REQUIREMENTS

● Demonstrated ability as a facilitative leader, popular educator, or community organizer. People in these roles know how to challenge, teach, and support others to develop and exercise their own knowledge and leadership in an organizational context.

● Understands business and can serve as an interim general manager running the day-to-day operations of a worker-owned cooperative as it get off the ground. Direct hands-on experience managing and growing small businesses or cooperatives is preferred.

● Supervisorial or group leadership experience. 

● Ability to work effectively with people of diverse economic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Spanish and English, with Spanish fluency sufficient to interact positively and effectively with monolingual worker-owners.

● Is flexible, creative, patient, energetic, and collaborative in work style.

Under the supervision of the program director and clinical psychologist, interns work with clients receiving services through St. John's Shelter for Women and Children. St. John's is a multi-faceted 3-tiered program providing participants a 120-day shelter program, employment training and job placement, supportive housing and aftercare services to assist women in moving along the continuum from crisis to self-sustainability over a period of up to 18 months.

Clinic interns work though the psychology clinic at the Shelter to provide mental health services to shelter clients. Interns are afforded opportunities to practice and further develop their skills assisting clients in addressing effects of homelessness, trauma, behavioral and social difficulties, chronic mental illness and other mental health issues. Experience is afforded in areas of case management, individual therapy, psychoeducation and crisis intervention. Interns receive weekly formal individual and group supervision (2 hrs.) as well as ongoing interaction and contact with other members of the St. John's team. 

Candidates must have completed their Masters in Social Work, Counseling or Psychology and be eligible for ACSW, MFTI, or PCCI, or post-doctoral registration prior to beginning internship.

Internship terms and schedules are variable. Interns are expected to commit to working a minimum of 20 hours per week for a minimum of 12 months. The next internship cohort will begin in June 2013. This is an unpaid internship.

Center for Domestic Peace (C4DP) serves women, men, and youth who have been, and/or who are at risk of being, abused and or battered, or who have perpetrated, and/or who are at risk of perpetrating, abuse, bullying, and or battering. C4DP's programs helping children, teens, women, and men to live violence-free lives include: 24-hour hotlines; emergency shelters; transitional housing; support groups; legal advocacy; school programs; community prevention and education projects; professional continuing education programs; corporate, state, and nation-wide trainings; leadership development programs; and resource identification. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Be the primary point of contact and greet all participants, donors, tenants, public, and staff professionally; Provide support in-person, over the phone, and by email; 
• Provide office administrative support including copying, faxing, phone calls, message taking, processing mail, scheduling, ordering and maintaining inventory of office supplies;
• Assist with the planning, scheduling, logistics, catering, and materials preparation and designing for meetings, trainings, workshops, and any other events as requested;

DESCRIPTION

The Sex Education Campaign Manager leads the campaign strategy and implementation of the Sex Ed the City Campaign. This includes setting the direction of the campaign work; building relationships with allied organizations, school administrators, teachers and students; engaging Forward Together youth in campaign strategy and activities; and connecting our sex education work with state and national campaigns and initiatives. To meet with partners and attend meetings and conferences, this position will be required to travel. This position will also coordinate the online communication and social media strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and implements strategic campaign plan that advances the goal of integrating comprehensive sexuality education in the Oakland Unified School District
  • Works closely with the Youth Organizer (who runs the youth programming workshops) to involve the youth participants in the organizing, visioning, planning and implementation of the campaign
  • Builds relationships with key partners and decision makers including allied youth organizations, Oakland school administrators, teachers, health centers and students
  • Attends and presents at state and national meetings and conferences on sex education policy and youth organizing
  • Leverages relationships with state and national partners to support the local organizing effort
  • Co-facilitates selected youth programming workshops and provides support to youth programming events
