ORGANIZATION

The National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD) is a nonprofit social justice research organization that promotes just and equitable social systems for individuals, families, and communities through research, public policy, and practice. We envision a just society in which people are safe and supported in their communities and treated with dignity by the systems that serve them. Our mission is to promote just and equitable social systems for individuals, families, and communities through research, public policy, and practice. For more than 100 years, our research has informed better system responses at all points of contact. We work to help protect children from abuse and neglect and to create safe and rehabilitative justice systems for youth and adults. Within these systems we also study the unique concerns of girls, LGBT individuals, and overrepresented racial and ethnic groups.

NCCD has two offices, in Madison, Wisconsin, and Oakland, California; and operates two centers:

• NCCD's Children's Research Center (CRC) collaborates with jurisdictions around the world to use research to improve service delivery to children and families. CRC is located in Madison.

• NCCD's Center for Girls and Young Women addresses the needs of justice-involved girls by providing research-based, gender-specific training, technical assistance, and curricula to providers in the juvenile justice system. The Center for Girls and Young Women is located in Oakland.

POSITION

Summary Description

This position provides support to two projects related to LGBT youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems: 75% time will be spent on a policy project aimed at reducing the number of LGBT youth in out-of-home placement, and 25% time will be spent collecting and analyzing survey and interview data on LGBT youth in the juvenile justice system.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

This individual will be responsible for the following tasks.

• Co-facilitating collaborative meetings.

• Developing relationships and collaborating with other organizations completing similar work.

• Developing anti-discrimination policies, data collection protocols, and data sharing agreements.

• Managing the collection and coding of interview and quantitative data.

• Collecting interview data from LGBT youth in the juvenile justice system.

• Participating in discussions about quantitative data analysis.

• Summarizing library and Internet research and writing literature reviews.

• Drafting blog entries and leveraging social media to improve NCCD's visibility.

• Completing proposals, reports, conference papers, and journal articles.

• Attending meetings with staff, our partner organizations, and policy makers.

• Organizing staff outreach events and making educational presentations.

• Representing NCCD at local events and forums.

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking

High level of critical/analytical/interpretive thinking and problem solving required.

Demonstrates the ability to work/think independently and execute assignments that reflect understanding of project task objectives.

Budgets time efficiently to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

Requests direction from supervisor as needed and reports back in a timely manner on problems encountered and assistance needed.

Checks in regularly with supervisor to ensure project tasks are completed within timeframes and meet conceptual objectives.

Level of Authority

Requires a higher level of decision making, autonomy, and accountability than the Associate I position but still requires general supervision/oversight for major project-related decisions. Formulates recommendations on project-related assignments and development strategies, and presents recommendations to supervisor/project manager for review.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

The ideal candidate will have an avid interest in research and policy and will have post-graduate coursework or a graduate degree in human development, education, sociology, law, legal studies, psychology, social work, ethnic studies, feminist studies, public health, public policy, or another related field. Minimum one to two years' experience. Must be detail-oriented, organized, and enthusiastic.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in the involvement of LGBT youth in multiple social service agencies. The majority of LGBT youth are also youth of color. Therefore, the ideal candidate will demonstrate cultural competency within the LGBT, Latino, Native American, First Nations, and/or African American communities.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Use of web-meeting technologies not required, but a plus.

Work schedule: Full-time position at 35 hours per week
