Would you like to work with women, peace and security issues? Do you want to apply your textbook Human Rights law skills to the real world setting of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region? Do you want to interact with NGOs from MENA and contribute to their work for Peace, Women and Security? Do you want to experience the exciting – and sometimes chaotic – life of working in a civil society organisation with small budgets and big ambitions?
If you have answered YES to the questions above, then we want you to be our MENA Project intern for Spring 2015.
As a member of the dedicated WILPF team, your tasks will be exciting, diverse, and challenging. You will take part in the UN human rights bodies' sessions, you will liaise with our partners in the MENA region and learn from their work and you will report on all of that using your academic knowledge.
You will also prepare articles, working documents and other materials concerning women's rights, peace and security in the MENA region for our blog, newsletter and for internal use and will assist with the administration of our website. The intern will be responsible for updating our website.
We encourage you to apply if you are a committed activist interested on Women's rights and Peace issues. The internship is perfect for an energetic, motivated person who wants to discover the world of feminist organisations and activism.
DUTIES
  • Researching, collecting and analyzing information about particular conflict situations, with a focus on our 9 partner countries to inform advocacy campaigns.
  • Liaising with our national partners to implement the programme activities.
  • Following up with other international organisations and sections on shared activities.
  • Attending and reporting on several events in Geneva including the UN Human Rights Council sessions, treaty bodies and side events and provide logistical and administrative assistance to WILPF delegations to Geneva.
  • Monitoring and reporting on international news and political developments in the region.
  • Providing Translation and proofreading from English to Arabic and vice versa.
  • Managing the MENA Agenda website, facebook page and blog.
  • Providing assistance to MENA team members as needed.
  • Assisting with logistics and administration of the Geneva office and facilitate conmmunications with other teams in Geneva, New York, London and the region.
PRACTICAL STUFF
  • Full-time internship (January-June 2015)
  • Geneva-based internship
  • One day dedicated to administrative support
  • You will be requested to do unofficial translations
  • Unpaid internship
  • Accommodation in our facilities are supported 50%
REQUIREMENTS
  • Pursuing a Masters Degree or a hold a Degree in International Relations, Gender studies, International Law, Human Rights or a related field
  • Human Rights activism or previous experience with the Civil Society
  • The candidate must be fluent in both English and Arabic. Working knowledge of French is a great advantage.
  • Knowledge of online social activism
  • Self-motivated and can demonstrate considerable initiative and be able to manage and complete many tasks simultaneously.
  • Mastered Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point and Excel)
  • Experience with Wordpress or other CMS (Content Management Systems)
  • Interested in WILPF's mission
