NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado is seeking a campus organizer for the Auraria Campus in Denver, CO. Applicants should have a passion for reproductive choice, strong communication skills and an interest in grassroots organizing in a higher education environment. Experience in student organizing, student government, social justice or community organizing is strongly preferred.
Reporting directly to the Political and Organizing Director, the Campus Organizer is responsible for engaging and educating students around pro-choice issues, including but not limited to pro-choice candidates and voting no on this fall's anti-abortion, anti-birth control ballot measure. This individual will also be in charge of developing a group of leaders from the student body, a volunteer base, and good relationships with existing student organizations.
Auraria campus has a population of 46,000 students representing many different backgrounds. The campus is comprised of three higher education institutions: Metropolitan State University, University of Colorado-Denver, and the Community College of Denver. The Auraria Higher Education Center provides shared services to all of these institutions. NARAL does not have an established student group on the Auraria campus, but does enjoy a strong relationship with the Women Studies' Center of Metropolitan State University.
JOB ACTIVITIES
- Recruit, train, and motivate students in organizing and advocacy around NARAL and on-campus campaigns
- Leadership development of students through specific issue and skills trainings
- On-campus presentations about NARAL and No on 67 events, policy issues, activities, and services
- Based on affiliate goals, recruit students to NARAL election activities to defeat Amendment 67 and maintain pro-choice majority in both houses of the Colorado state legislature
- Work with NARAL staff to support other affiliate campaigns and goals
- Data entry and data management including tracking all events and volunteer activity in the VAN
- Aid in the coordination of media outreach and publicity events to build awareness and support on campus using both social and traditional media
- Build and maintain strong relationships with administrators, faculty, student leaders, student organizations, and the Auraria campus community at large
- Provide tangible support to the affiliate and the NARAL network in the form of list growth, membership recruitment, media visibility and direct action takers on issues and candidates.
- Build a leadership pipeline and activist network on this campus as a way to recruit new members into the NARAL family
- Some travel required to events in Denver Metro area. Occasional travel to outside Denver Metro area possible
QUALIFICATIONS
- Grassroots organizing experience
- Strong track record of setting and meeting goals
- Outgoing and enthusiastic personality
- Available to work weekday evenings and weekends; willingness to work nontraditional hours
- Independently driven and able to produce quality work without constant supervision
- Experience with and ability to work within diverse and underrepresented communities
- Commitment to organizational mission in order to effectively promote and advance the goals of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado
- Experience conducting trainings and/or workshops
- Experience with electoral work preferred, but not required
- Student organizing and campus experience preferred, but not required
- Reliable transportation preferred, but not required
SALARY & BENEFITS
This is a temporary, full-time, non-benefited position for a period of five months. Salary is $2,500 per month. Workplace includes dynamic colleagues, team-oriented work environment, and the opportunity to make connections within the progressive political community.
