Development Director

Job posted by: Breast Cancer Action

Job description

Breast Cancer Action (BCAction) is seeking a talented, high-performing Development Director to join our dynamic and innovative activist team. The Development Director leads all fundraising efforts for this established and growing nonprofit, which celebrates our 25th anniversary this year.
BCAction is a national education and activist non-profit based in San Francisco, CA working to achieve health justice for all women at risk of and living with breast cancer. For 25 years, BCAction has been the watchdog for the breast cancer movement and has worked to put women's health first. In our work to change the status quo, we launched our award-winning Think Before You Pink campaign in 2002 and coined the term "pinkwashing" which is now a household word. We were the only breast cancer organization to serve as a plaintiff on the Supreme Court case outlawing patents on the human BRCA genes in 2013. Since our founding, we have brought our trusted voice to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to shift the balance of power from Big Pharma to patients. Our work has been featured in major outlets across the country, including The Daily ShowThe Colbert ReportThe Guardianthe Los Angeles TimesJezebel, and NPR. From our inception, we have been a national leader in advocating for the system-wide changes necessary to address and end the breast cancer epidemic. We are able to serve as the independent, trusted voice for women's health because we have a strict conflicts of interest policy and never accept corporate funding from any corporation that profits from or contributes to cancer.
The Development Director will build on four consecutive years of revenue growth to ensure a balanced budget and sufficient resources to fulfill our recently adopted five-year strategic plan. Key responsibilities include leading and growing the organization's revenues by creating and implementing a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising plan. We have a large grassroots membership base and 65% of our revenue comes from individual donors.
The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about grassroots fundraising strategy and efficiently executes the day-to-day tasks required for successful individual donor management. In addition to experience with individual donors at all levels, this candidate also has a proven track record of grant writing, fundraising events, business sponsorships, and both snail mail and online fundraising appeals. The Development Director will supervise a fundraising staff of 1.5 FTE, plus a grant-writing contractor, support our all-volunteer Board of Directors in meeting their fundraising goals, and engage and support volunteer solicitors and fundraisers.
This is a great opportunity for a resourceful, results-driven team player to be part of a dynamic team at a feisty, fearless women's health non-profit. We are looking for a skilled fundraiser who is passionate about BCAction's mission and work and will help grow the organization's donor base. We currently have an annual budget of a little over $1 million, and the Development Director will lead and implement a fundraising strategy to reach $1.5 million by 2019. The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and serves in a leadership capacity within the organization.
This position is based at BCAction's office in San Francisco, CA. For more information about our work, please visit www.bcaction.org and www.thinkbeforeyoupink.org.
