Women's Learning Partnership (WLP), a partnership of twenty autonomous organizations primarily in developing countries, trains and supports women leaders and advocates for a just, peaceful world. The Program Associate for Advocacy & Communications is based at the WLP office in Bethesda, Maryland (in the Washington DC metro area).

Women's Learning Partnership (WLP), a partnership of twenty autonomous organizations primarily in developing countries, trains and supports women leaders and advocates for a just, peaceful world. WLP creates culturally-specific leadership curricula and trainings on democratic participation, and conducts peer to peer capacity building for organizations in the global South to help them empower women to fulfill greater leadership roles at the family, community and national levels. The partnership also conducts research-based advocacy campaigns to reform laws and practices that impede women’s full participation in the life of their communities and societies. Over the past decade, WLP’s programs and training materials, published in twenty languages, have reached thousands of women in over forty countries, strengthening local organizations to become self-sustaining and to power women’s movements across the globe.
Job Description
The Program Associate for Advocacy & Communications is based at the WLP office in Bethesda, Maryland (in the Washington DC metro area). Responsibilities include:
  • Develop and support advocacy campaigns based on ongoing communications and information from partner organizations, working collaboratively with WLP program staff. Assist with the execution of innovative web-based campaigns for WLP’s human rights advocacy program.
  • Liaise with WLP’s partner organizations in the Global South and assist with coordinating the implementation and evaluation of grassroots training workshops and training of trainer institutes. Gather, analyze, and communicate partner activities and outcomes.
  • Strategize and implement a plan to streamline and modernize WLP web content across all platforms including: web site, blogs, social media, digital content repository, online learning platform, and other entities. Coordinate with relevant vendors and consultants.
  • Create, update, and maintain WLP communications materials and web content, to include web stories, e-newsletters, blog posts, alerts, social media messaging, etc.; liaise with content authors and editors; and coordinate the development of WLP’s multi-lingual websites.
  • Work collaboratively with WLP program and operations staff to develop and implement fresh ideas for print and web-based promotional materials.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for media inquiries. Monitor and build the Partnership’s visibility in major and alternative media outlets. Promote WLP on key gender and development websites and web-based publications. Work closely with Development to maintain organizational contact database and strategize targeted messaging.
  • Assist with the planning and development of webcasts, video-conferencing, and video interviews with partners.
  • Assist with planning and implementing international conferences and meetings.
  • Track advocacy and communications activities and outcomes against targeted goals. Write reports to funders, board and partners.
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to women’s empowerment.
  • Graduate degree or significant professional experience with accredited certifications in a related field (women’s studies, international relations, journalism, media and communications, etc.).
  • Minimum 3 years professional experience in a communications role, preferably in the non-profit sector.
  • Fluency with contemporary and cutting-edge messaging, design, and branding best practices and technologies, particularly in the online space. Ability to think strategically about communications in relation to organizational goals.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to produce strong, compelling written and visual content across a variety of communications platforms.
  • Demonstrated project management/project coordination skills.
  • English language fluency. Excellent writing and editing skills. Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Fluency in using social media technologies such as Facebook and Twitter for organizing or advocacy.  Excited about and comfortable with utilizing emerging technologies.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure.
Preferred Skills
  • Intermediate to advanced fluency in French strongly preferred. Professional working knowledge of Arabic or Russian highly desirable.
  • Basic HTML experience a plus. Experience with content management systems and web content creation in Drupal.
  • Proficiency with common constituent relationship management databases/applications (DonorPerfect, Salsa).
  • Experience with marketing, public relations, and/or branding campaigns and best practices.  
  • Familiarity with the politics, history, and cultures in Africa, Asia, or the Middle East.
  • Experience living, working, or volunteering internationally.
