Written Translation Consultant (3 Months)

Description:
The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is a non-profit research organization dedicated to the empowerment of women and girls and the promotion of gender equality. ICRW works with partners to conduct empirical research, build capacity, and advocate for evidence-based, practical ways to change policies and programs. ICRW has its headquarters in Washington, DC, with regional offices in New Delhi, India and Nairobi, Kenya.
ICRW seeks a written translator who can translate interview and focus group discussion guides and training materials from English to Arabic and notes from interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory activities from Arabic to English. This written translator will be used in an assessment of an international NGO program in Upper Egypt. The program brings marginalized rural adolescent girls into safe learning spaces to improve their educational, health, and social opportunities. The program consists of literacy, life skills and livelihoods, and engagement through sports. The program aims to create safe spaces for girls, positively influence the social norms around girls’ life opportunities, and educate girls in literacy and numeracy so that they can re-enroll in the formal school system.
Time Period: January 2013- March 2013
Amount of Time: Translation of approximately 220 pages over a period of 3 months
Compensation: Rate per page to be negotiated
Primary Duties:
ICRW seeks the services of an experienced written translation consultant to assist with the following tasks:
- Translate interview and focus group discussion guides from English into Arabic
- Translate training materials from English into Arabic
- Translate written notes from key informant interviews, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory activities from Arabic into English
- Be responsive to ICRW staff should they have questions regarding translated material
The translation of interview and focus group discussion guides and training materials will take place in January, and the bulk of the work, the translation of the notes, will take place in February and March.
Required Skills:
- Fluency in English and Arabic
- At least 3 years experience as a written translator
- Familiarity with local context, including issues related to early marriage, early pregnancy, adolescent girls, and local language and customs
- Prior translation experience for social science research preferred
- Experience working with non-governmental organizations
