PRIMARY FUNCTION

Contract position (12 hours/week) responsible for the overall management of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness Community Walks in Springfield and sites throughout southern Illinois in addition to other events and outreach responsibilities. Events Coordinator will also work on additional events and meetings as directed. Position reports to Illinois Area Director and may work with the Illinois Chapter Board.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Events Coordinator will work from home on personal computer with internet access in Springfield Illinois. Must be able to travel for meetings, events, and as directed.
  • Travel throughout the state is required and reimbursable. Several meetings/events take place in the evening and on weekends.
  • Participate in community awareness events to increase publicity of the organization and educate the public on suicide prevention programs available through AFSP.
  • Responsible for fiscal management of events as well as volunteer management - including recruiting and training volunteers to serve on event committees.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with community leaders and organizations to promote AFSP's message, build support for our mission and increase involvement in AFSP events and programs.
  • Work with media to publicize AFSP events and mission to heighten public awareness and reach fundraising goals.
  • Secure walk sites and ensure that all necessary permits and licenses are secured. Interact with officials and local authorities (town clerks, police, and fire depts.) as necessary.
  • Identify and solicit in conjunction with walk committee companies to provide cash and in-kind sponsorship and media sponsors.
  • In accordance with procedures identified in AFSP's walk manual oversee registration on the day of the walks.
  • In conjunction with walk committee recruit individual and team walkers (as outlined in walk manuals).
  • Be available as needed to help with mailings, brochure distribution and other administrative tasks associated with events.
  • Organize other outreach activities
  • Plan other community events
DESCRIPTION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to the issues of suicide, depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders.
  • Must work independently successfully and be trustworthy.
  • Must be professional, organized, and courteous.
  • A strong work ethic and a drive to achieve goals is a must.
  • 3 professional references required.
  • Previous nonprofit or event planning experience preferred.
NATURE OF POSITION

The Events Coordinator is a contractual position. This individual will work an average of 12 hours per week (some weeks less, some weeks more) and will receive a flat fee each month. The Events Coordinator works with their own computer at home. He or she must live in Springfield or a suburb of Springfield. He or she agrees to be available for regular meetings with the supervisor and Board Members.
