DESCRIPTION

Choices in Childbirth seeks a part-time (20 hours a week) Program Manager for The Business of Being Born: Classroom Edition program.

ORGANIZATION

Choices in Childbirth (www.choicesinchildbirth.org) is a non-profit organization that is a national leader in consumer advocacy and education for women and their families. At CiC we believe that every woman deserves a safe, respectful and deeply fulfilling birth experience. We help women make informed decisions about where, how and with whom to birth and ensure that they have access to the full range of birth options. CiC constantly strives to improve maternity care across the country and to ensure that the birth of each child is treated with the respect and reverence that it deserves.

PROGRAM

The Business of Being Born, Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein's renowned feature-length documentary film about maternity care in the United States has been modified for classroom use. The Business of Being Born: Classroom Edition (BoBB:CE) (www.classroombobb.com) is an educational tool, that includes a 30 minute version of the original film and study guide. The intention of this program is to educate future generations of policy makers, educators, practitioners, and parents about the state of maternity care in this country. The Program Manager will work to integrate this dvd program into high schools and university classrooms to ensure that young people know about birth choices before they confront their own birth decisions. We are specifically reaching out to high school feminist clubs and women's studies classes and the following university departments: anthropology, sociology, public health, women and gender studies, nursing, midwifery, and political science. By corresponding with teachers and schools, attending conferences, and following-up with buyers, the BoBB:CE Program Manager will work to strengthen and expand this program. We will also be expanding our outreach to childbirth educators, midwives, doulas and other childbirth professionals.
